Choice/Cuts: “Jackal” (Premiere) – Bad Braids
After receiving such a random, beautiful spring-like day yesterday, we continue our journey through autumn towards winter with today’s drop in temperature, which we felt was the right time to share our latest Choice/Cuts featuring Bad Braids, a.k.a. Megan Biscieglia. We instantly fell in love with the freak-folk singer-songwriter once we heard the first syllable of her song leaving her lips. It was very clear to us that she’s a rare talent, and we wanted to share her gift with you so we invited Biscieglia into the studio to capture the beauty of her music on audio/video. We are delighted to premiere today the first of two brand new songs that we recorded with Bad Braids called “Jackal,” with its vocals and instrumentation providing a desolate and chilly landscape, draping you in veils of wintry eternal slumber like the Snow Fairy in Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams – truly hypnotic. The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Jake Lewis & The Clergy
After getting forced to quit being a drummer in a high school hardcore band by his parents for fear of it being a “bad influence,” Jake Lewis found salvation in learning to play the guitar and making music on his own. Now, backed by his band The Clergy, the singer-songwriter has found a home, and just released his first album with the group last month entitled Gossip. You’ll have the opportunity to hear Jake Lewis & The Clergy perform tunes from their debut this evening in the Victorian Dining Room at the North Star Bar for its weekly acoustic series, but first, check out our Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner interview with Lewis HERE.

Satellite Hearts Opening for The Districts at MilkBoy Philly Nov. 18
It looks like Satellite Hearts will be taking a break from writing new material, emerging tonight at MilkBoy Philly. On their last EP Four to the Four, you really got a sense of a young, talented band exploring multiple genres as they searched for their own voice. I predict that wherever they finally end up landing you’ll find new and old heads roaming through their audience. They’ll be opening for high school sensations The Districts, who have a bright future of their own with multiple record labels currently knocking on their door and an upcoming tour already slated for early next year with White Denim. New Video: Exordium (Feat. Strand of Oaks, Ice Dragon & Jonn Ollsin) – Josh Jones & Morgan Galen King
Check out this rad and rather violent animated video project called Exordium that was co-directed by Univox‘s Josh Jones! In the vein of "Ralph Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings and Fire & Ice (though certainly a bit of Heavy Metal and He-Man made its way in, too)," it was also written, co-directed, drawn by hand and animated by Morgan Galen King, and features some powerful music from Philly’s own Strand of Oaks, Ice Dragon, and The Family Band’s Jonn Ollsin. The video was submitted to the Machinima Interactive Film Festival.

Below are the last six bittersweet demos from Gener, appropriately entitled Gener’s Gone: The Final Demo Recordings of Gene Ween (2009 – 2011), which also came with the message below. After 20+ years of near-fatal drug & alcohol abuse (thankfully culminating with intensive but successful rehab), AARON FREEMAN (aka Gene Ween) was left in a dire financial situation. All proceeds will go directly to Aaron, as he continues down the path toward creative freedom and personal health.
These demos represent the final writings and music of Gene Ween, before he departed and the inner FREEMAN emerged. On that note, we have received a two word personal statement from Aaron: “stay tuned.”

Psalmships & TJ Kong Bookends at JB’s Nov. 17
Tonight, Johnny Brenda’s plays host to an evening of singer-songwriters culminating in a set by sad-folk brooder Joshua Britton, a.k.a. Psalmships. Hypnotic and painful, tracks from his latest album, Songs for a Red Bird, reach an unselfconsciously emotional level, so get excited to be depressed by these newly released heartbreakers live. Kicking off the evening will be Bukowski-esque storyteller TJ Kong, a.k.a. Dan Bruskewicz, with his roughneck garage-blues stripped bare for his solo performance this evening. Cloud Minder Finding Solace at JB’s Nov. 16
Deli instrumental faves Cloud Minder are a band that’s been DIY to the core since 2005. From mixing all five of their albums, to hand creating and painting all of their artwork and merchandise, and booking shows with well-established acts like Film School and This Will Destroy You, they’ve done it all by themselves. However, with founding member Dave Sommer needing to seek treatment outside Atlanta, GA for his battle with brain cancer, the band was unable to play out live and raise funds in the traditional manner to release their latest LP Solace, so the group reached out to their fans, who responded in a big way. And tonight, after delivering what is sure to be an incendiary performance at Johnny Brenda’s, you should buy their new album, which will be available on vinyl, or if you can’t wait until then, take a listen and purchase it digitally below. Weekend Warrior, November 15 – 17
If the collective music of Wooden Shjips, Bardo Pond and Creepoid are any indication, tonight’s show at Underground Arts stands to make the contents of Hunter S. Thompson’s head look like an episode of Happy Days, in what promises to be a thoroughly psychedelic, post-modern experience. First, opener Creepoid lives up to their name with a relatively somber take on the genre, mixing laidback rhythms and distant, echoing lyrics. Bardo Pond is a relative change of pace, in that the music is comparable to listening to a classic rock album through a mushroom cloud. The band pushes the boundaries of how furious a guitar line can be whilst still being considered ambient. Headliner Wooden Shjips, the band that built their name on sounding like a trippier Velvet Underground, have spent the last six years perfecting the balance between head and groove, overwhelming your hips as much as your senses.
