Free Download: The Illvolution – Ill Clinton

Posted on:

While Drake might have found a way to become rich and famous writing hip-hop tracks for "the ladies," that is certainly not the reason why we love the genre. Check out this ominous, hard-hitting LP from sound sculptor Ill Clinton entitled The Illvolution! The Philly producer assembled this way rad fifteen-track album by recruiting a fine collection of underground emcees, which also includes local up-and-comers like Carl Kavorkian and Firm Taqtics as well as Army of the Pharoahs vets Crypt The Warchild and King Syze. Special thanks to The Key for bringing this record to our attention.

Coming out from behind a veil of pot smoke, you’ll find Killer Bangs unleashing some good time rock ‘n’ roll from below the waist. The band, fronted by “Shakey” Jake Hammill (formerly of Cold Fronts) and his brother Dylan Hammill with Stephen Clifford (Circa Survive) on drums and Chris Wehy (The Makes) on guitar, will be kicking out their party anthems at Johnny Brenda’s tonight for the first time. They’ll be warming up the stage for the garage-psych explosions of Residuels, who are made up of Moon Women frontman Justin Pittney and Creepoid drummer Pat Troxell, who also scares small children as lead screamer in noisy hardcore outfit Heathen Reign. New Track: “Bent Nail” – Nothing

Posted on:

Check out heavy, nihilistic shoegazers Nothing‘s new single "Bent Nail"! It popped up on the internet earlier today, but was then mysteriously pulled down. Now, we know why. The track just reappeared as a Fader premiere. It’s off the band’s forthcoming album Guilty of Everything, due out March 4 via Relapse Records. You can catch them live on Sunday, February 2 at The Boot & Saddle co-headling with Whirr.

GUNK Opening for R. Stevie Moore at JB’s Jan. 22

Posted on:
I kept coming across the band name GUNK in DIY listings numerous times last year before any music or information had surfaced from the group, which obviously piqued my interest. The band feautures Josh Mackie (Your Children is Beautiful) and Nate Dionne (Glocca Morra, ex-Snowing), and you can check out their impressive debut LP Gradual Shove HERE that is available for purchase via local indie label Ranch Records. GUNK will also be hauling their fuzzy, punk-ish garage-indie rock up from Philly basements and out of its warehouses to Johnny Brenda’s stage this evening to open for eccentric grandfather of lo-fi recordings R. Stevie Moore as well as Jimmy Whispers, the new project from solo project from former Light Pollution frontman James Cicero. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Alexis V.

We’d like to introduce you to a new band called Local Onlys, and their debut EP Half Birthday, which you can stream below and download for free via LIPS Records. Their sound is a mix of multiple influences, but we’re really picking up on their Elvis Costello/Black Lips vibe. And of course, we love their name. The group is made up of La Salle University students Mark Lynch, Julie Gutekunst, and Jacob Smolinski, who began jamming together in the school’s chapel, where they also partially recorded their record. See – take advantage of all the perks of being in college, y’all, and get involved!

Tuesday Tune-Out w/Olive Drab & Smoother at PhilaMOCA Jan. 21

Posted on:

While this current gentle snowfall is lulling us to believe performances won’t be cancelled tonight, I don’t really think that will remain true, but we’ve seen stranger things happen at PhilaMOCA. In a "show must go on" attitude, DIY PHL will be presenting another Tuesday Tune-Out this evening with Ruben Anree’ Polo as the guest curator. His featured acts will be Olive Drab [and if you just look up a bit at the top of our page, you’ll see that they are our current Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner], and headlining the bill will be loud pop-punk four-piece Smoother, who just released their debut album Guys Till We Die last month. A hint to the film that is planned to be screened this evening is a video of R Kelly’s "I Believe I Can Fly." Could another showing of Michael Jordan’s Space Jam be happening at PhilaMOCA? Well, here is a list of other movies that the song has appeared in as well: Drumline, Ice age: The Meltdown, Fun with Dick and Jane, and The Hangover: Part III. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

New Music Video: “Hot Dad Calendar” – Cayetana

Posted on:

To honor Martin Luther King Jr. yesterday, we took the day off from writing about music to help out with a little painting so forgive us for still playing catch up. Now, we already knew Cayetana‘s "Hot Dad Calendar" is a helluva catchy tune with an absolutely rad song title, but the South Philly power trio really brings you into the party with their new music video for the single. This has been on serious repeat. Why? Simply – it makes us feel young and alive, which is obviously a good thing. Cayetana are supposed to be kicking off their mini-tour with Waxahatchee and All Dogs tonight at The Mercury Lounge in NYC, but we’ll see if the weather allows that to happen. The tour will be closing out in Philly this Sunday, January 26 at the First Unitarian Church. (Photo by Mary Ferrigno)

Sore Saints Stirring the Cauldron of Emotion at Golden Tea House Jan. 19

Posted on:
Stir the cauldron of emotion that boils at the surface of Sore Saints sound tonight at Golden Tea House. Jagged creeping guitar lines are set against a heavily pursuant combination of bass/percussion, giving the overall impression of moving through the murky moonlight as commanding vocals are delivered forcibly from deep down in the pit of the stomach. Sore Saints find a place in the cavern of darkness with its post-punk steely-cold noise feel to pull the listener up close. This proximity reveals the tie that binds the message with music. Golden Tea House, (Please email goldenteahouse42069@gmail.com for more info.), 7:30pm, $7, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Drown in the Honesty of Our Griffins at MilkBoy Philly Jan. 18

Posted on:
Our Griffins will be functioning under the guidance of the sweetly sad songwriting of DJ Brown. The group’s deep reverbs and gentle, echoing guitar riffs complement the intensely emotional and personal lyrics mostly about Brown’s family and feelings. His latest album, Michael Boyd (named after his deceased uncle), is a waterfall of honesty, and it realizes it’s full finger-snapping potential with a hint of pop in all the right places. Following Our Griffins are the LA emo-pop boys Bad Suns, who will be releasing a new album next week, and the evening will conclude with the indie earworm machines, Royal Bangs, who are halfway through their January tour. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St, 8:30pm, $12, 21+ – Maggie Grabmeier
