Rock to the Future’s Music for All Video Campaign & Ball

Posted on:

The kind folks at Rock to the Future would like to know why music and/or music education is important to you. How so? They are asking for you to send them a short video telling your story, which will be shared at Rock to the Future’s Music for All Ball on Saturday, April 12 at the Ukranian Club (847 N. Frankford Ave.) and possibly throughout the months leading up to it. The formal event will feature performances by 22-member Brazilian-style band PhillyBloco and RttF’s own student house band (covering contemporary and classic hits), local beer, signature cocktails and light fare – plus a gift to take home. For more info about how you can get involved in their Music for All video campaign, please go HERE. Thanks!

Little Big League, Literature, Psychic Teens & More at Duff Gardens Feb. 22

Posted on:
This evening’s stacked lineup at Golden Tea House with Little Big League, Kal Marks, Literature, and Psychic Teens has been moved to Duff Gardens. In August, Little Big League released their debut LP, These Are Good People (Tiney Engines). Their sound is a departure from most of the members’ previous endeavors; it’s a callback to 90’s guitar rock filled with angsty riffs and the haunting voice of Zauner breathing over heavy drums and ambient chords. Boston’s Kal Marks bring a heavier, burned-out rock to the stage. Powerful lyrics are twisted and spat out by lead singer Carl Shane, whose unusual voice is accented by overpowering instrumentals. Lightening up the mood will be Austin transplants, Literature. They play a jangly type of rock ‘n’ roll, burgeoning on power pop. While their songs have a lot more bounce, their lyrics occasionally juxtapose their music, mixing in heavy topics with danceable beats.  Rounding out the bill and bringing the darkness will be Psychic Teens. Playing unsettling, crashing noise over deep, goose bump-inducing vocals, the band takes goth and puts it through the post-punk grinder. The night seems like a wonderful rock ‘n’ roll potpourri. Duff Gardens, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7:30pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – Shaylin O’Connell

Hurry Opening “for a Band [You] Like” at Union Transfer Feb. 22

Posted on:
Matt Scottoline of Everyone Everywhere takes his other project Hurry to Union Transfer this evening. Serving as the show’s opener is something that the group playfully embraces as they will be selling limited edition T-shirts that read “I Saw Hurry Open for a Band I Like.” Hurry takes Scottoline’s introspective emotive lyrics, and delivers them on an alternative rock platter, cultivating catchy pop-rock, while incorporating the ferocity of fuzzed-out guitar to add that extra bite. They will be joined by local indie punk quartet Glocca Morra who floats in a grey area that combines moments of unabashed intensity with lighter melodic points. Then, you can dive into a trio of Topshelf Records artists beginning with the well put together indie rock of A Great Big Pile of Leaves, who will be followed by the extensive ensemble, Connecticut’s The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die. Finally, the show is headlined by Evan Weiss led emotive-rock endeavor Into It. Over It. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 7pm, $15, All Ages – Michael Colavita

rjd2 & Lushlife Throwdown at Union Transfer Feb. 21

Posted on:

DJ/producer/multi-instrumentalist/record label owner rjd2, a.k.a. Ramble John “RJ” Krohn, skyrocketed to fame and hip-hop credibility thanks to his debut LP Dead Ringer and 2004’s critically acclaimed Since We Last Spoke. None too shabby for a virtuoso who records, arranges, and produces all of his songs in the comfort of his fully furnished basement studio. The Renaissance man is back with his latest sonic journey More Is Than Isn’t, and his homecoming at Union Transfer tonight should be a real throwdown, especially with another Deli favorite, emcee/producer/multi-instrumentalist Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Haldar, in tow. Lush has been making waves since his head-turning (and bobbing) 2009 mixtape Cassette City. So tonight will be an opportune moment to see him in his element, especially since he’s been crafting a lot of new material that we’ve been patiently waiting for him to unleash. Check out the collaboration that Lushlife did with rjd2, Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs, Nightlands), YIKES the ZERO, and many others for Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through below! The Deli Philly’s Year End Poll – Top Performers: Chris Forsyth

Posted on:
Walls are artificial boundaries that in some aspects contain and provide structure by limiting the possibilities of a piece of music, forcing a focus. And in most cases, this focus is welcomed. However, Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel successfully topple over the traditional mold, revealing a wide-open terrain. The abundance of space enables the group, led by Forsyth’s exemplary guitar work, to explore freely. Through this stretching process, the overall sound can better evolve over the course of a song, album or live set. Rather than rushing past an intriguing musical side street, they can get into the thick of it. While most songs provide a singular snapshot of a moment, Forsyth and crew dig deeper. An expertly honed psych atmosphere is the cornerstone of an organic yet consciously controlled sound. So, instead of merely offering a momentary glimpse, Forsyth & The Solar Motel allot the necessary time to orchestrate vivid songs that transport the listener from one place to another, mapping out the journey. This venture provides solace by comfortably erasing the expectations of knowing were you’re going and how you’re getting there. Simply letting you sit back and embrace the scenery, which is why you find Chris Forsyth in the very respectable third place position in our Year End Philly Best Emerging Artists Poll 2013. – Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Year End Poll – Top Performers: Night Panther

Posted on:
The runner-up in The Deli Philly’s Best of 2013 Emerging Artists Poll is the dance-inducing crew, Night Panther. They describe their musical style as “sex pop,” an apt title for the band’s hazy glamour. The group released their self-titled album in mid-2013 via Small Plates Records, an LP rife with infectious beats and seductive singing, taking a page from legends such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Underneath all of the electronic dazzle, however, lies some serious soul. Songs like “Queen Bitch” reveal the softer side of the band, a sentimental ballad of lost love, with heart-tugging lyricism and vocals that would seem right at home in a stadium venue, surrounded by thousands of lighters, alit and waving. Just like moments in the bedroom, Night Panther’s eponymous album listens like a well-versed Lothario with a perfected technique. Knowing just when to speed things up and when to slow them down, the band expresses a versatility that will surely take them outside the sphere of Philadelphia. No matter where they go, Night Panther is sure to seduce all whom cross their path. – Shaylin O’Connell
