Where Is My Mind?: Creepoid’s Sean Miller & Anna Troxell

Posted on:
There are definitely two stories that will always stand out in my mind when thinking about the band Creepoid. I once saw the band implode during a performance and nearly brawl on stage at Tritone, after just having such a good time drinking together before the show (definitely like five too many drinks that evening), but then all was good the next morning, and they were able to laugh about it over breakfast. Another classic was when the band’s van broke down in Alabama on their way back from their first trip to SXSW, and they ended up stuffing the nonfunctioning vehicle in the back of a U-haul to bring it home to Philly so it could be fixed (in order not to negate the van’s warranty) – all while taking turns sitting in the back of the U-haul in the van. It’s those unusual tales that help in defining Creepoid for me. They’re a talented group of unique characters, who are chill but can be quite volatile, at times, which reflects in their sound. But at the core, there is familial, misfit bond that propels the band forward and draws you into their music. And today, I’m happy to welcome the long-awaited release of the group’s sophomore self-titled LP, out once again via No Idea Records. It’s another must-have for your collection! I also had a chance to toss a few questions at Creepoid’s Sean Miller (guitar/vox) and Anna Troxell (bass/vox) before they headed off for tour and another hectic SXSW. Check out what they had to say HERE!

Dark Blue 7″ Record Release Show at PhilaMOCA March 4

Posted on:

With a band name like Dark Blue, you might expect to hear electronic music that is as vast and spacious as the ocean. That is until you learn that the band is made up of John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers), Andy Nelson (Paint It Black, Ceremony, etc.), and Mike Sneeringer (Purling Hiss, The Loved Ones). And once you hear the opening power chords ring out from the project’s debut single "Subterranean Man," coupled with Sharkey’s vocal delivery that finds itself somewhere between Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy and Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, you may have flashbacks of your days as a goth kid in your all-black attire. Dark Blue will be celebrating its first release, a two-song 7" that is available via Brooklyn indie label Katorga Works, at PhilaMOCA this evening, where they have also promised to unleash some new tunes. The veteran power trio will be joined by Wyncote, PA hardcore outfit Anxiety Hammer. And in keeping with with the the venue’s Tuesday night tradition, a screening of British horror film The Hunger (1983), featuring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon and directed by Tony Scott, will follow their performances. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Alexis V.

Posted on:

Lighthearted psych-pop five-piece Cheerleader is gearing up to make the trek to SXSW this year for the first time. The fledgling outfit only has a handful of shows and songs under its belt, but the band is made up of a group of experienced musicians, who have performed in such acts as Sun Airway, Former Belle and Shorty boy-boy, and has already gathered some nice buzz off its lead single "New Daze," a languid, instantly enjoyable indie-pop ditty that will be appearing on the group’s debut EP. They’ll be returning to Kung Fu Necktie this evening, the site of their first live performance, where they’ll be joined by Newark, DE dream-pop quartet Fiance and garage-psych crew The TeleVibes. The Deli Philly’s March Record of the Month: Guilty of Everything – Nothing

Posted on:
Guilty of Everything (Relapse) is the full-length debut of hard-rockin’, shoegaze quartet Nothing. Co-produced by Jeff Zeigler and the band’s Domenic Palermo and Brandon Setto, the record speaks to us through a skilled use of varying/dynamic instrumental tones, consistently juxtaposing Palermo’s soft, understated vocals with a musical outpouring that lushly pushes to the forefront.

“Hymn to the Pillory” leads in with a simple guitar progression; the accustomed hushed, whispering vocals giving a dreary sense of calm. However, it ushers in the first of many heavy instrumental displays, exploding percussion melding with distorted guitars, until we find Palermo’s airy voice reaching out to save us through the sea of chaos. “Bent Nail” is a quick-hitting, up-tempo surge that towards its conclusion spaciously spreads out, altering the aggressive compositon to a tranquil moment “if you feel like letting go.” Nothing continues to ride this peaceful wave with an undercurrent of familial themes amid bursts of serrated, distorted guitars and precise drumming in “Endlessly.” With a creepy, haze-riddled start, “Somersault” is lead by a shimmering wave of soothing guitar as the vocals assist to shape the song’s tone, before an agitated upturn escalates the intensity. While vocals remain at peace, the guitars flex. Opening the door to “Get Well,” Domenic Palermo leads in with the statement – “It’s easier than this.” The song finds the ideal point where the blending of those half-whispered, confessional vocals with a burning torch of music is both rough around the edges yet not ragged, resulting in a complete realization of force.

Guilty of Everything closes with its title track, a climber that takes its first steps with a circling guitar pattern and soothsaying vocals. However, as the song elevates, there is a walking tandem of guitar/percussion revealing an open cavernous element, before the band unleashes charges of instrumental dynamite, making its final statement on the album so apropos. Guilty of Everything is a record that confronts the gloomy darkness of life head on and comes through the other side in a cathartic state. It exhibits Nothing’s maturation and ability to weather both the calm and the storm, with the historically hard-livin’ group of former hardcore kids finally finding a more comfortable place close to the edge.

Nothing is celebrating the release of Guilty of Everything tonight at Kung Fu Necktie with Weekend and Cassavetes, which is sold out, but there will 25 more tickets made available at the door at 8pm. The album officially drops this Tuesday, March 4 via Relapse Records.  – Michael Colavita

Bleeding Rainbow Record Release Show at Golden Tea House March 1

Posted on:

Former lo-fi duo turned bombastic post-punk four-piece Bleeding Rainbow is returning home tonight, and will be celebrating the release of their latest LP Interrupt (Kanine), which was produced by Fancy Time Studio’s Kyle "Slick" Johnson. The band has had kind of a rough time on the road with tourmates Hunters needing to drop off because frontwoman Izzy Almedia suffered a concussion. But like true professionals, the show must go on for Bleeding Rainbow, who was recently called "America’s best-kept secret, the ultimate cult band" by Dave Grohl. Yeah, that’s right – Dave "motherfuckin’ Nirvana/Foo Fighters" Grohl! Yes, yes – I realize that nothing I write now can be cooler than that so I’ll just let you know that Roomrunner, Multicult and Loose Tooth (who was added to replace Hunters) will also be on the bill for tonight’s celebration. Cheers, ladies and gents! Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or venue.), 8pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – Alexis V.

Shaking Through Season 5 Launch & Weathervane Music Benefit w/Lushlife, The So So Glos & Torres at JB’s March 1

Posted on:

Ever since 2009, producer Brian McTear and his longtime friend Bill Robertson have been using their non-profit organization Weathervane Music as an outlet to create projects to advance independent music and the community that supports it. And its biggest accomplishment through those endeavors has been the Shaking Through series, which documents several artists as they share every process that goes into the birth of one of their songs. And over the years, it has featured a healthy dose of Philly artists such as Creepoid, Strand of Oaks, The Districts, Reading Rainbow (now Bleeding Rainbow) and more. 2014 marks their fifth year of production, and the crew are all set to celebrate with a launch party and Weathervane benefit at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The evening will feature buzz-worthy former alums dynamic emcee/producer/multi-instrumentalist Lushlife, whose Toynbee Suite was a major highlight of Season 4, and Brooklyn pop-punk outfit The So So Glos. And the fact that acclaimed singer-songwriter Torres is also on the bill may be a hint of what will be coming up for next season. Weekend Warrior, February 28 – March 2

If you haven’t listened to Nothing’s new LP Guilty of Everything yet over at NPR’s First Listen, then you need to do it right now! It’s a beautifully balanced record that effortlessly flows between being heavy and tranquil. The album is easily one of my favorite releases so far this year. The band and producer Jeff Zeigler really outdid themselves on this one, and you should help them celebrate its release this Sunday at Kung Fu Necktie. And don’t forget to bring a set of earplugs! Nothing will also be sharing the bill with San Fran shoegaze trio Weekend and local garage-punks Cassavetes. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10 adv/$12 door, 21+ – Alexis V.
