John the Conqueror Record Release Show at MilkBoy Philly March 7

Posted on:

For the past four years, John the Conqueror have been winning crowds over by playing a blend of southern rock inspired from their childhoods, the punk of their adolescence, and the blues and soul that they’ve always held so closely. The end result is a band that takes its name from a folkloric slave hero with no frills rock ‘n’ roll ready to make an immediate impact. Tonight, John The Conqueror will celebrate their second and biggest release to date, The Good Life (Alive Naturalsound), at MilkBoy Philly. And it’s sure to be an action-packed show with Blayer Pointdujour & the Rockers Galore, who are getting ready to release a new LP in June, and indie rockers Thee, Idea Men, who also have their second album New Level Shoes on the way (due out May 20). MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Final Spirit & Dust Performance at The Boot & Saddle March 7

Posted on:

Tonight The Boot and Saddle welcomes three Philly folk bands for a night of tender swaying and one out-with-a-bang goodbye. First up is the Kristen Sylvester-led ensemble, Spirit and Dust. Touting a polished sound with the looseness of an afterhours jam session with friends, each instrument and voice fits beautifully into a lyrical puzzle. Sadly, this will be Spirit & Dust’s final performance, but they still have a few new tunes to share alongside old favorites. They’ll be opening for headliner Black Horse Motel, who sound like they’re straight out of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack (in a good way), and Song Dogs, a Southern rock-inspired Americana band with elements of gospel vocals and self-described “railroad tones.” The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Jen Kertis-Veit) – Maggie Grabmeier

Communion w/Vacationer, Worshyper, Drone Ranger, The Ghost In You & More at Underground Arts March 6

Posted on:
Don’t worry, Communion doesn’t mean anyone will have to say grace, and it’s more of a bring-your-own-wafer situation (if that’s what you’re into). Rather, it’s a showcase of some of Philly’s fine talent, coupled with the collective’s network of national/international touring acts. Vacationer has probably the most appropriate name out of any band. Their songs transport listeners to a tropical shore with their “Nu-Hula” style: poppy tracks infused with island melodies (some even incorporate samples of tropical birds chirping). The group isn’t afraid to experiment with traditionally opposing sounds, creating music that rises and falls like waves on a beach – sometimes rolling smoothly from one sound to the next, but more often crashing into the ears with varying moods that, somehow, still feel natural. Another Deli favorite, Worshyper, takes their sound in a different direction. The vocals are R&B, the music is electronic, and the result is infectious, futuristic soul. Psych rockers Drone Ranger will remind you that guitars are still alive and well in Philly, adding lo-fi synth that feel like it’s being broadcast live from outer space. They play shoegaze with a little more movement – thanks to the effects leaning toward a groovier sound. Opening the evening will be The Ghost In You, a.k.a. Billy Polard, providing serene vocals full of reminiscence and a wistful optimism towards the past. Queens outfit, Pearl and the Beard, brings a powerhouse trio of vocal artists who sing over beautiful orchestrations of various strings and percussions, alongside the traditional guitar, drum, and bass. Ok, maybe you may want to say a bit of grace for this plentiful bill. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

It was directed by Wade Vanover, and was partially shot on Super 8 film. The idea behind the ambiguous video is "to mimic the creation and deterioration of memory." Where Is My Mind?: Nothing’s Domenic Palermo

Posted on:
If you didn’t know or haven’t listened already, Nothing put out a fabulous new full-length album entitled Guilty of Everything, which is also The Deli Philly’s March Record of the Month (you can read our review HERE), via hometown independent powerhouse Relapse Records. I ran into the band’s frontman Domenic “Nicky” Palermo the other week after DIIV’s show at The Boot & Saddle, and suggested that we should do another interview together. It had been almost three years since our last one for his Suns and Lovers release. He was down with it, and said that I “had to be able to come up with more interesting questions” than what he’s been getting lately. The pressure was on, but I was up for the challenge. I was pleased to get a message from Nicky the other day saying that he thought the questions were “great.” Mission accomplished! You can view our recent Q&A HERE.

Auctioneer Headlines at JB’s March 5

Posted on:

Art-pop outfit Auctioneer found its inner pop star with the band’s latest single "Hard To Believe It.," and I’m digging it. The mid-tempo, radio-ready track features the group’s first collaboration with drummer Tommy Bendel (Buried Beds), which could possibly get a bit more permanent with the departure of former drummer Todd Scheid, who will continue to produce and record acts out of his studio in the Lehigh Valley. Auctioneer will be headlining this evening at Johnny Brenda’s with support from some fine out-of-towners, Berlin-via-NYC dream-pop act Fenster and lo-fi Burlington, VT trio Hello Shark. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
