New Song: “Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches.” – Son Little

Posted on:

His voice may already be familiar to you, but now Aaron Livingston, aka Son Little, is ready to get his. The endlessly soulful singer was featured on The Root’s undun, as well as RJD2’s Icebird project, and now he is coming out on his own, showing why such stalwarts were clamoring to work with him. The guitarist and singer’s torment and pain manifests itself into a haunting, slow-burning new track called, “Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches.” The sparse but emotive track is highlighted, unsurprisingly, by Livingston’s powerful vocals. The Anti- Record signed Son Little already has some important friends, so he is sure to be on the rise.  Check out the track and video below.

Drone Ranger and Le Yikes Surf Club play Kung Fu Necktie April 1st

Posted on:

The psyched out, cosmic rock of Drone Ranger is alive and eclectic within single songs like, “The Dead Isle,” one of the two tracks available from their forthcoming debut LP. The newish band sounds polished beyond their years, creating some far-out, mind-bending jams. Also joining in on the ruckus is Le Yikes Surf Club, the amped surf punks who bring a refreshing, upbeat, West Coast sound to the endless winter of the east. The most recent release from the boys is their acoustic tinged, Yikes (Country Club), (Get it?) but these guys will most definitely be bringing their amps to this show. Extra points for having a song called “GHOST RIDE THE WHIP.” Both the bands are opening for Burger Record’s Cosmonauts, and Black Sea tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 8PM, $5 21+ – Ethan Detry

Song Premiere: “Fire in the Sky” – OhBree

Posted on:

“Fire in the Sky” a cut off OhBree’s latest album Death By Broomstick (Due out April 15th) is a vibrantly intriguing, yet twisted tune. It begins with an eerily menacing spattering of percussion, and gloomy guitar with additional dramatic touches of ticking-clock piano. Bright bursts of trumpet cut through the forceful chant-like vocals, which retain a positive feeling despite the song’s grim/ tormented overall aesthetic. Throw in an explosive guitar solo and “Fire in the Sky” may creep its way into your head. Check out the exclusive track below. (Photo by Matthew Raspanti)

Here is a new video from local party starters Prowler for their track “Creepy Crickets.”  The video, directed by friend and filmmaker Lord Humungus, was straight out of Frankenstein. Shot in black and white, it is stoic, bizarre and downright fascinating.  Enter the darkness below. – Alexis V.

New Video: “Mind Games” – The War on Drugs w/ Jim James

Posted on:

The War on Drugs are currently trekking the country behind their fantastic new LP. Lost In The Dream. Recently, they have been doing their own spaced-out version of John Lennon’s Mind Games, but their stop in Portland included a cameo by one Jim James on vocals.  The band is touring all around the world the next few months, so maybe we will get some more cool guest vocals, but until then, enjoy the video below.

New Video: “Dig” (Live at The FADER FORT) – Nothing

Posted on:

Here we have a new video of local shoegazers Nothing performing within the walls of the The FADER FORT at this years SXSW.  The band was warming up the crowd for Migos, Travi$ Scott, and Rick Ross, so a good portion of the audience looks lost during Nothing’s performance. Nonetheless, they rocked out to a packed fort, even if the sound mix was the opposite of what they are used to. The band is on tour for a while, so quench your Nothing thirst with this video until the boys are back in town.

Amanda X Tears Apart Kung Fu Necktie March 30th

Posted on:
Local trio Amanda X is more or less what would happen if you collided Plumtree and Cat Power; the bands self-described “cuddle punk” is made up of endearingly sweet vocals draped over downright furious instrumentals. The resulting sound is tender, vicious and a bit nostalgic. The show was supposed to be Co-headlined by Smoother, but apparently they are no longer playing. Openers will be The Caution Children, Tigerscout, and the fantastic Joint Chiefs of Math. They’ll all be coming together at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 8PM, $5 21+ – Daniel Ludwig

Roof Doctor Record Release Show at PHILAMOCA March 29th

Posted on:

Celebrate the release of Mobile Freedom Home, the sophomore LP from Roof Doctor, tonight at PhilaMOCA. Mobile Freedom Home finds Roof Doctor in a finely polished place; each song seems to carry a natural, casual groove. Mark Harper’s lyrics offer an odd, comforting effect, one that generates a welcoming atmosphere in spite of their melancholy tone/message. Roof Doctor is rather deceptive musically, at first the sound appears simple; however, that simplistic vibe is a byproduct of tightly knit compositions rather than sparse instrumentation.  Eclectic noise-rockers Mumblr alongside the sleepwalking sonic experimentalists Son Step. Long Island’s Soda Bomb round out the evening blending a variety of rock with garage/punk tendencies.  PhilaMOCA 531 N. 12th St., 8pm $5, All Ages, -Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, March 28-30

The glitter-rock of newcomers Likers is contagious and thrilling. The bands sound is unhinged at times, but the production is quite slick. Their debut EP “Men Of Honor”, which came out earlier this year, is brimming with promise. They take a page from bands like The Replacements and The Clash while cashing in on their youthful energy. Joining them is The Fantastic Imagination, a lush psychedelic folk project. Their layered production and vocals makes each song bloom into its own. Filling out the bill are two Long Island bands, Broadcaster and American Hellfire Club.  All of this is going down at The Golden Tea House on Saturday.  But as always, there are tons of other options too.
