Weekend Warrior, May 9 – 11

Posted on:
When Marcus Denke and Kevin Keenan combine forces forming The Joint Chiefs of Math, the results are truly dynamic. To be more specific, The Joint Chiefs of Math seem to lock-in and sync up, communicating complex musical ideas which are played at a frenetic yet calculated pace. The pairing weaves through a labyrinth of sonic styles, taking unexpected turns and steering clear of convention – in essence, purposely driving off the grid to find their own warp-speed way. The emotionally volatile, noisy alt-rockers Mumblr occupy the other opening position this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, gearing up for the fret-shredding work of Marnie Stern. Speed Up w/Slow Animal at Toby’s Purgatory May 9

Posted on:
Slow Animal released their new EP The Other Side earlier this week. It demonstrates that the duo of Alex Karaba and Dan Colanduno can generate an infectious mood-driven piece of work. Actively noisy percussion-led instrumentation helps propel/articulate its emotive lyrical agenda. It’s that combination of enthusiastic aggression of drums and guitar with a somewhat grey narrative aesthetic that creates intriguing results. Speaking of grey, self-proclaimed “Sad Rockers” Olive Drab is also on bill tonight at Toby’s Purgatory. The group’s latest LP The Big Sleep represents a melting pot of varying temperaments spilled out on the musical canvas for all to see and hear. Lyrically playfully pop-punk outfit Ted Nguyent and Blue Smiley round out the bill. New Track: “Year of the Sunhouse” – Little Big League

Posted on:

Philly’s own Little Big League have a new song called "Year of the Sunhouse" that they premiered yesterday over at Pitchfork. It’s a promising glimpse into their next project, a 7-inch split with Ovlov, that they’ll be releasing, once again, via Charlotte, NC indie label Tiny Engines. The band will be performing next in Philly on Wednesday, May 14 at The Barbary, which will be the kick-off to their upcoming tour.

New Videos: “Absent Year” (Live) & “You Call That a Kiss” (Live) – Radiator Hospital

Posted on:

Sam Cook-Parrott, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital, doesn’t really need much to move an audience, as you will see/hear in the latest Space Jam Session. His lyrics conjure up hidden feelings towards long, lost loves whom you’ve told yourself that you’ve forgotten, but know in your heart that they will always be part of who you are today, while his melodies effortlessly guide you through these journeys of discovery. Below is the premiere of an acoustic version of a new song entitled "Absent Year," and you’ll also find him performing "You Call That a Kiss" from 2012’s Can You Feel My Heart Beating? Enjoy! Kite Party LP Release Show at PhilaMOCA May 8

Posted on:

Just in time for summer, Kite Party have released a new full-length with plenty of vibrant indie-rock anthems that are perfect for the season. Long before they mixed Come on Wandering, the quintet have been previewing songs like “Halflife” and “Summery Dream” at shows and through their social media channels. And the end result has increased the anticipation for their sophomore LP that gives them much to celebrate during tonight’s release party at PhilaMOCA. It will also be a good opportunity to catch Kite Party and their friends Three Man Cannon before they embark on tour together later this month. The Scranton/Philly outfit that features former members of Tigers Jaw have much to celebrate as well since they will also be releasing their next album, Pretty Many People, on May 27 via Lame-O Records. The show also features Thin Lips (ex-Dangerous Ponies, ex-Tigers Jaw), GUNK, and The Spirit of the Beehive. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $7, All Age – Bill McThrill

New Music Video: “She’s on a Different Trip” – I IM EYE MY

Posted on:

I IM EYE MY shared another hypnotic track, "She’s on a Different Trip," from their new album 7 Transmissions, which is now available for purchase on cassette via Not Not Fun. This time around the journey touches the realm of sci-trance, and is accompanied by a kaleidoscopic video, created by Dan Papa, that recycles some images from the film Where The Sun Has a Mustache by Phil Rached. We definitely want what "she’s" having.

Free Download: “Low” – The Stammer

Posted on:

Below is a new single from The Stammer called "Low" that was recorded during the same sessions as their upcoming full-length album, along with its B-side "First Embrace." Both are available for free download, and were heavily influenced by the works of New Order. We’re also hearing a David Byrne/Talking Heads vibe in the vocals as well. The Stammer will be performing next in Philly on Saturday, May 24 at Kung Fu Necktie for Mock Suns’ album release.

Experience the First Time w/Needle Points at JB’s May 7

Posted on:
Needle Points have been doing a bit of touring like all good psych bands should. After performing an impressive opening set at Plastic Little’s recent return show at Underground Arts (which led to a request by Red Bull Sound Select for them to perform at another one of its showcases), the free-lovin’/pro-psychedelics crew will be headlining Johnny Brenda’s for the first time tonight. I bet that they’ll make good use out of JB’s amassing collection of lighting toys. (BTW: R5 should book them for the Temples show this August at Morgan’s Pier already.) Needle Points will be joined by twangy Portland, OR (via New London, CT) Americana-rock outfit Quiet Life and The Bailey Hounds’ Chris Cardillo. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Tuesday Tune-Out w/SGNLS & Dangerbird Jr. at PhilaMOCA May 6

Posted on:

Tuesday Tune-Out returns this evening at PhilaMOCA after a brief hiatus last month so that the multi-purpose art space could host another successful year of Cinedelphia Film Fest. May’s series will be curated by WKDU‘s Yoni Kroll, and this inaugural event will feature the heavy synth-punk of SGNLS, who will be releasing a new LP via FDH Records very soon, and Dangerbird Jr., who will be a stripped-down version of psych outfit Dangerbird. (They were kind enough to be a last minute replacement after The Bad Doctors dropped off the bill.). Tonight’s film will be "a 70s rock music horror cult classic." PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7:30pm, $5, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
