New Hound Albums Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Recently, Hound (one of Perry Shall’s numerous creative outlets) released a pair of individual LPs entitled Out of Time and Out of Space respectively. These dark-shaded heavy-punch sounding albums feature Chris Wilson (Ted Leo and the Pharmacists) on drums, and were recorded, mixed, and mastered at Studio 4 as well as co-produced by renowned producer/engineer Will Yip (Circa Survive, Balance & Composure, Title Fight, Ms. Lauryn Hill, etc.), while the sequencing duties were handled by none other than Ted Leo. Out of Time also includes a cover of “Nothing Achieving” a B-side by The Police. You can take a listen to both of Hound’s records below, and the cassettes will be available via Burger Records.

The Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby, Trenton Avenue Arts Fest & More

Posted on:

Philly summer festival season kicks into overdrive today. For the Italian Market Festival, Connie’s Ric Rac sponsors two days of music that features the likes of Johnny Showcase, Thee, Idea Men, Toy Cannons, and Lovers League. Meanwhile South Philadelphia Taproom plays host to their 9th Annual Wheat Beer Festival which features music from West Philadelphia Orchestra, St. James & The Apostles, Arrah Fisher and The Jawnz.

But the big festival event of the afternoon might just be in Fishtown, which plays host to its annual Trenton Avenue Arts Festival and the always-interesting Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby. While over 200 local art and food vendors sell their goods, the streets will be filled with several bicycle powered moving sculptures racing through mud to compete for best in show. But for the first time in awhile, the timeless art fest will also feature live music curated by Cloud Entertainment. The Deadeyes will bring a stripped-down version of their violin-fueled rock, while Conversations will bring some vibrant danceable indie pop. Brian Fitzy is sure to put fun spin on familiar tunes with his electric violin. The event will also be followed by an afterparty at Bottle Bar East that benefits Rock to the Future. BTW: It’s going to be beautiful out so make it out somewhere today. Trenton Avenue Arts Festival, Trenton Avenue (btwn Norris St. and Frankford Ave.), 12pm, Free, All Ages – Bill McThrill

The Bad Doctors Record Release Show at The Boot & Saddle May 16

Posted on:
The new-wave punk-injected West Philly trio known as The Bad Doctors celebrates the release of their first full-length entitled Burning City (FDH Records) tonight at The Boot and Saddle. The group performs synth-laden, danceable music embedded with a more serious closer to the surface attitude concentrated in the heavy deep tones found in Matt McDermott’s vocals. The Bad Doctors work that tug of war push-pull found between joy and darkness and release and reality. They will be joined on the bill this evening by recent Deli Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners future/primitive whose self-titled 12’’ is a steady churning blend of jagged, stabbing guitars, steady thumping back-end and assertive, serious/raw-coated vocals. Synth-punk hybrid and fellow FDH Records labelmates SGNLS round out the night’s lineup. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Way To Go Moses

Posted on:
As you’ll learn in our recent interview with Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners Way To Go Moses, core members Bret Buckman and Ethan Cohen are not religious people. However, it does appear that they’ve put a lot of thought into the Biblical characters life, as well as their love for Philly and their myriad of musical influences. The childhood pals have also spent a lot of time together crafting their harmonious laidback campfire tunes. You can learn more about the non-religious group, which now also includes Greg Whitney, HERE, and you can catch them live this Sunday, May 18 at Fergie’s for free performing as the house band for comedy troupe Tight Six.

All-ages Homecoming for The Districts at FUC May 15

Posted on:

2014 has been a huge breakout year for The Deli’s Philly Emerging Artist of 2013 winners, The Districts. From releasing their first label album with Fat Possum, to touring with Austin’s White Denim, and playing shows in the UK and beyond, they have made some major moves. Tonight’s all-ages show at First Unitarian Church will be a brief homecoming with old friends before they embark on a June tour with Dr. Dog, and get ready for big summer festivals like Lollapalooza, XPoNential Festival, and the Electric Picnic Festival in Ireland. The Districts will be joined this evening by their good pals Pine Barons, Nashvilles’s Clear Plastic Masks and Fly Golden Eagle.
