The Wurxs Opening for People Under The Stairs at JB’s June 9
Cousins Gee Moolah & Trons of the production/emcee combination known as The Wurxs will be making a somewhat rare appearance at Johnny Brenda’s this evening. The duo is probably best known for its collaborations with some of Philly’s best rhymeslayers like The Roots’ Black Thought, who was featured along with fellow Roots associate Truck North on the track “Visions Polarized,” as part of the group’s WURXSWEDS series. However, tonight they’ll be stepping into the forefront live on stage at Johnny Brenda’s, weaving elements of smooth soul with the forward get-down drive of funk, all while conscious confident flows grab the reins to steer your ears as your body instinctually sways. The Wurxs will be sandwiched on this evenings’s bill by Brooklyn’s Fresh Daily and headliner LA’s People Under The Stairs, whose latest album (and 9th overall) The 12 Step Program was just released last month. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $15, 8pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita
New Track: “I Was At A Party” – Weird Hot
Local "funk noir" six-piece Weird Hot recently shared a new name-dropping single called "I Was At A Party," which was recorded with Jeff Zeigler. It has a bit of a too-cool-for-school 80’s throwback vibe, and the band definitely sounds like it is partying somewhere that we’d like to be hanging at. Well, you can do just that when Weird Hot performs on Saturday, June 21 at Johnny Brenda’s.

They’ll be making a welcomed stop home this evening to a sold-out show at The Boot & Saddle with Superheaven and Sad Actor. The Bailey Hounds Rock w/the Dead at Laurel Hill Cemetery June 7
Ever since releasing their first album Along the Gallows in 2011, The Bailey Hounds have managed to craft a dark and somber blend of gothic Americana folk that also pulls from their love for metal. Music like this is perfect for a cemetery, and that’s exactly why they’ll be in their element when The Bailey Hounds play their third annual show at the historic Laurel Hill Cemetery tonight. They have been working on a special double set list that features plenty of special requests. So it will be a good time to get out there and rock with the dead. Laurel Hill Cemetery, 3822 Ridge Ave., 8pm, $10 All Ages – Bill McThrill
Weekend Warrior, June 6 – 8
Many Arms Record Release Show at KFN June 6
Many Arms – a sublime piece of musical schizophrenia – will be celebrating the debut of their 4th album Suspended Definitions (Tzadik) at the Kung Fu Necktie tonight. A blend of alt-punk aesthetics and a jazz compositional style, their sound is basically what would happen if someone handed Miles Davis an electric guitar and said "surprise me." Each song is essentially a prolonged, furious guitar solo over already breakneck instrumentals, all able to turn on a dime; the band manages to weave a wry, ominous voice without even thinking about vocals. Many Arms’ latest release has already earned them a spot in Spin‘s list of "50 Best Albums of 2014…So Far." They’ll be joined by Toronto saxophonist Colin Fisher of Caribou Vibration Ensemble, who also joined the group for the recordings of Suspened Definitions, for a special late night performance. W.C. Lindsay Record Release Show at The Fire June 6
Celebrate W.C. Lindsay’s release of Easy Victim, Charitable Deceptions (available via Big Footprints Records) tonight at The Fire. Lindsay has crafted a record whose songs mesh well with the warm weather; they stick while also incorporating a clean refreshing pop sound. It’s easy to fall for the steady, breezing bass/percussion grooves that accelerate at opportune moments, backed by corresponding clear vocals, which temporarily deviate as a means of expressing emotion. The album’s radio-friendly base enables W.C. Lindsay to touch down on varying genres, from pop-rock to electro-pop, to more of a R&B groove, all while maintaining a cruise control pace. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita
New Video: “Anybody’s Girl” -> “25w A19 120v Blues” (Live) – The Lawsuits
Below is a live performance video of The Lawsuits from this past April’s Communion Night at Underground Arts. The band smoothly transitions from "Anybody’s Girl" into "25w A19 120v Blues," which are also found next to each other on their critically-acclaimed LP Cool Cool Cool. The footage was captured in black & white by videographer Bob Sweeney. (Photo by Caitlin McCann)
Let Literature Get Trapped in Your Skull at PhilaMOCA June 5
Tonight, put aside whatever mediocre plans that you might have and replace them with the much better idea. Spend your Thursday evening rockin’ out at PhilaMOCA, the multi-purpose DIY space will be host to local indie popsters Literature, who create a sublime intersection between bouncy, guitar-centric math rock and suburban melancholy, all with a liberal glaze of surf. A unique combination of hazy and upbeat, it’s the kind of stuff you’ll find trapped in your skull weeks, if not months, later. Between them, Los Angeles outfit Heathers’ distinctive coffee and cigarettes brand of guitar shredding, local all-female post-punk trio No Other, and "Scottish scallywags" The Spook School, the show promises to be a damn fine way to spend a night. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $7 – $10 Donation, All Ages – Daniel Ludwig
Shaking Through w/Cayetana
Here’s the latest episode of Weathervane Music‘s Shaking Through featuring all-female pop-punk trio Cayetana. The video definitely provides insight into the type of relationship that these ladies have built from playing music and being in band together. The song that they recorded at Miner Street Recordings is called "Miss Thing," and is about singer Augusta Koch’s grandmother, whose portrait hangs in their practice space. You can stream the track HERE, which will not be on the group’s upcoming LP that will be available via Tiny Engines. Cayetana is currently on a national tour with The Menzingers.
