New Video: “Woke Up To The Light” (Live – Acoustic) – Strand of Oaks

Posted on:

Strand of Oaks, a.k.a. Timothy Showalter, made a stop at what is left of the Berlin Wall when he was on tour in Germany. Below is a touching, acoustic performance of "Woke Up To The Light," which was recorded by HNDGMCHT. Showalter is currently on a massive tour for the rest of the summer that will be wrapping up on September 19 at The Boot & Saddle; however, he’ll only be home for about a week before he heads out on the road gain in Europe.

New Music Video: “Gully” – Spank Rock

Posted on:

We can’t stop watching this new music video from Spank Rock for his bass-heavy, car-rattling banger "Gully," a collaborative single with Kid Kamillion and Boys Noize. The video plays out more like an excerpt from a gritty Vice documentary, providing us a glimpse into the seedier side of New York that is rarely captured. It was wonderfully directed by NYC street photographer Sean Maung.

The Deli Philly’s July Record of the Month: Liberation! – Peter Matthew Bauer

Posted on:
Thank God The Walkmen are on a “hiatus.” As unpopular a statement as that might be to fans of the beloved indie-rock outfit, the resulting album, Liberation! (Mexican Summer), by the group’s former bassist Peter Matthew Baur reinforces the truth behind what I think. Baur has taken the time as a chance to expand his wingspan creatively, producing an album that’s slick, resonant and infectiously psychedelic.

It’s a heady journey through the artist’s far-from-normal life, never lacking in emotion and fundamentally based in a sense of optimism. Also, one of the most fascinating things going on with Liberation! is how it blends local and international aesthetics without ever feeling like appropriation or pandering. Songs such as “I Was Born in an Ashram” and “Philadelphia Raga” feel organic and refreshing, incorporating exotic influences without ever making them feel awkwardly placed or unnecessary.

The whole effort is the culmination of a meditative post-“hiatus” tour through Europe, and it shows. The record is relaxed and casual yet exploratory, never seeming to break a sweat while being thoroughly entertaining. The collection of songs has a comforting accessibility reminiscent of couchbound evenings of honesty-filled, drunken/stoner chats with your best buddies, which may seem to come few and far between as all of us get older and busier. – Daniel Ludwig

Psychic Teens, Heavy Medical & Pinkwash Opening for Weed at Golden Tea House July 1

Posted on:

Tonight, Golden Tea House offers you a chance to embrace the darkness. Kicking off an abbreviated run of dates, the trio of Psychic Teens usher in a noisy littered-filled musicality, building a creepy avalanche of anticipatory danger that makes their full-throttled instrumental approach an exhilarating horror film meets rollercoaster hybrid – a horror-coaster if you will. Heavy Medical will be joining the proceedings with their all-out sludgy, sledgehammer noise-punk, continuously smashing forward in conquest mode. The tandem of Ashley Arnwine (Bleeding Rainbow) and Joey Doubek (Hume) will also be combining forces to become Pinkwash, releasing an energetic experimental punk EP Your Cure Your Soil. Vancouver’s grunge rockers Weed close out the evening of heaviness in West Philly. Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – Michael Colavita.

“R.I.P. Toy Soldiers (2007 – 2014)????”

Posted on:

Toy Soldiers just announced that their show on Friday, July 18 at Union Transfer with Cheers Elephant and Cheerleader will be "a sort of farewell, final hurrah for now, blowout bash" for the band. This really doesn’t come as a big surprise to us since frontman Ron Gallo released his new solo LP Ronny last week and the group had noticeably lost momentum after its raucous eleven-piece (or so) lineup disbanded in 2011. The most recent split seems amicable with its "never say never" vibe, and you can find out what the band’s latest members will be up to in the "long version" of their "R.I.P." message HERE. We’ll always remember them as the headliner of one of our first Deli Philly-presented showcases at a short-lived DIY space in a plastic bag factory across from Kung Fu Necktie that none of our staff and the people, who we still keep in touch with that ran it, can recall the name of, holding over four hundred drunken Temple students and future friends that evening. Good times – cheers, fellas! (Photo by Caitlin McCann)

Kurt Vile Mural by Steve Powers Vandalized

Posted on:

Our Twitter timeline blew up yesterday when local artist Najeeb Sheikh (Instagram user @dasheikee) came across "an ignorant piece of shit" painting over the commissioned mural for Kurt Vile‘s Wakin on a Pretty Daze album cover by world-renowned street artist Steve "ESPO" Powers. As reported by street art blogger Conrad Benner (who goes by the Twitter and Instagram handles @streetsdepts), "According to @dasheikee, the man said he was not connected to the city or the building’s owner and that he was buffing the mural because it was attracting graffiti to the neighborhood." This is outrageous! What narrow-minded asshole has the nerve and audacity to illegally do such a thing? You can check out photos of the culprit at work above and below by Sheikh. Please help track down this jerkoff, and send plenty of bad karma his way.

Update: Philly.com‘s Leah Kauffman scored an interview with the culprit, DJ Lee Mayjahs, who talked about being mentally "not well" and his remorse for his actions. He has also offered to pay Powers for his time to repaint the mural. You can read the rest of what Mayjahs had to say HERE.
