New Music Video: “Victoria” – Downtown Club

Posted on:

We are kind of captivated by the combination of April Harkanson’s ethereal vocals and jagged guitar licks from Downtown Club. In their new video for the single "Victoria," the smoky, black & white aesthetic of the production provides an addtional air of mystery to the post-punk trio. It was directed by Adam Peditto, and the track will appear on the band’s upcoming 7".

Buffalo Stance Opening for OOIOO at JB’s July 21

Posted on:

Buffalo Stance, the brainchild of Man Man‘s Jamey Robinson, has gone through many configurations throughout the years. However, with his funky, masterful keystrokes, Robinson has always managed to make the live experience one of the quirkiest dance parties in Philly. And with the project’s current lineup consisting of bandmate Christopher Sean "Pow Pow" Powell and multi-instrumentalist Matt Gibson (The Extraordinaires, ex-Man Man), Buffalo Stance’s grooves will certainly be intesified manifold. They’ll be the lone supporting act this evening at Johnny Brenda’s for avant-garde Japanese collective OOIOO. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Debut Freeman LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The demise of the strangely wonderful Ween definitely was taken hard by some of our Deli staff and friends, especially those who grew up or went to school in the Philadelphia/Bucks County area during the band’s heyday. Admittedly, we were a bit confused by Aaron Freeman’s (formerly Gene Ween) 2012 release Marvelous Clouds, a tribute album to Rod McKuen. However, with his first post-Ween LP of originals, Freeman (Partisan Records), you’ll find him returning to the type of songwriting that made the band a cult favorite, albeit with even more pop leanings. Obviously, we miss Deaner’s rock god guitar work, but listening to the new full-length record is giving us a warm, fuzzy feeling that we haven’t had in a very long time. You can check out the album in its entirety over at Spin, and Freeman will be stopping by Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, October 3.

Red Bull Sound Select w/Spank Rock, Prowler & Mumblr at Underground Arts July 19

Posted on:

Spank Rock headlines a trio of local acts for the Red Bull Sound Select showcase curated by Jump Philly. The temperature will be on the rise tonight as the sensual, steamy, pulse-grinding groove is all but assured to make things hot and heavy with a lyrical flow that isn’t afraid to offer direct observations and raunchy intentions that are guaranteed to make those within the confines of Underground Arts blush, giggle and possibly get a bit horny. The moodily melodic pop-punk of Mumblr will also grace the stage with its varying levels of intensity, appropriately fuzzing out while applicably providing an air of disorder. The unfiltered psych-boogie experiment of Prowler appropriately performing underground will expand one’s expectations and wet the appetite for an evening that dares to boldly tear down boundaries. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $3 (w/RSVP, $10 w/o), 21+ – Michael Colavita

Adult Swim [Burlesque] w/Schoolly D at PhilaMOCA July 19

Posted on:

Liberty Rose, Fem Appeal, Hayley Jane, and a bunch of other lovely ladies return to PhilaMOCA tonight for another bizarre but enticing edition of the Television Burlesque Art Show. And for this performance, they’ll be doing it to an Adult Swim theme, which should prove to be weirdly entertaining even if you aren’t a fan of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Robot Chicken, Tom Goes to the Mayor, and other after-hour segments. On top of it all, there will be a special musical performance by the Godfather of Gangsta Rap and man behind the Aqua Team Hunger Force theme song, Schoolly D. It’s a rare occasion to catch the man who penned songs like “Gangster Boogie” and “King of New York” loooooong before it was a common occurrence by the likes of Ice-T, N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, and a whole generation of others, especially in such a smaller scale venue. And that’s all the more reason to attend this evening of fun-filled debauchery. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 3:30pm, $20 Door/$25 VIP, 18+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, July 18 – 20

Posted on:
After being victims of a hit and run this past Sunday, Nothing was forced to rent a van to finish out the rest of their tour, which obviously is an expense that few smaller-scale bands can afford, so any merch purchases or donations (PayPal at Nickymoney@gmail.com) would be greatly appreciated when they stop home this Saturday at the First Unitarian Church. The hard-rockin’/livin’ shoegaze outfit will be co-headlining the bill with badass California progressive hardcore crew, Matador Records’ Ceremony. They’ll also be joined by locals Bad Side, Iron Lung, and Anxiety Hammer so be prepared to get sweaty and feel bodies smashing against you in the steamy basement of The Church. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7pm, $14, All Ages – Alexis V.

Final Philly Hurrah for Toy Soldiers at Union Transfer July 18

Posted on:

For the past 7 years, Toy Soldiers have been riling up audiences and gaining acclaim (USA Today’s Band to Watch in 2013). But after “20+ musicians, 3.4 million highway miles, 9 thousand rest-stops and a lifetimes worth of experience,” the band will be giving Philadelphia (you’ll still be able to travel with them for a couple festivals well into next month) one final hurrah at Union Transfer tonight. It’s far from goodbye though as Ron Gallo recently released his first solo effort on American Diamond Recordings (which features a few of his TS family as backing musicians), and drummer Dom Billett and guitarist Matt Kelly are getting ready to unveil their next project, Coin Purse. But for now, this will be the final opportunity to see them as a collective in the city that raised them. This evening’s show will also mark the first Philly homecoming for their longtime friends Cheers Elephant, who packed up for sunny Southern California pastures last year. Rounding out the lineup will be the buzzworthy indie outfit that started as a bedroom project between longtime friends Joe Haller and Chris Duran, Cheerleader. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 9pm, $14, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Tutlie Radiating at Bourbon & Branch July 18

Posted on:

Tutlie has been continually evolving since they first arrived on the Philly music scene from West Chester, but Jessie Radlow’s sultry, wispy vocals has always been the beacon of light helping to guide their musical ship. Tonight, she’ll radiate live on stage at Bourbon & Branch where Tutlie will be joined by up-and-comers Bondage & Discipline and New God. Ever since The National Rifle announced their name & lineup change to Bondage & Discipline, they have found a synth-laden new voice. And with new songs being unveiled as they work on their debut album aimed for release in 2015, it will be a perfect time to catch up on what the group has been up to lately. And if the recent single, “Firework,” from New God’s upcoming LP is any indication, then they are definitely going to be an act to pay attention to in the future. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

New Music Video: “Blood Boil” – Prowler

Posted on:

Prowler recently came out of their lair to share a new visually-stimulating music video for the band’s single "Blood Boil." The kooky animation was provided by Daniel McCartney. Prowler will also be performing live this Saturday at Underground Arts as part of the Red Bull Sound Select/Jump Philly showcase.
