A stacked lineup happens at The Boot & Saddle tonight that sees The Bailey Hounds headlining their first local show since they rocked Laurel Hill Cemetery in June. And they’ll be set to deliver their melodic blend of dark country rock ballads with metal undertones. The show will be a great chance to catch Levee Drivers while they take a break from recording a new album in the studio, so it’s possible that you may be treated to some new material in the process. It will also be a good chance to catch Katie Frank & The Pheromones before they play the local fest circuit at Philadelphia Folk Festival and Clark Park Music & Arts Festival. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill
Debut Sheer Mag EP Available for Streaming
Fledgling Point Breeze female-fronted garage rock outfit Sheer Mag was invited to participate in last weekend’s OK FEST, and if you take a listen to their debut EP 7" below, you’ll know why. The bratty-yet-endearing vocals, combined with big riffs and anthemic melodies, form the foundation that just might make them your new rock ‘n’ roll crush. 7" won’t be officially released until next month, but we highly recommend that you keep tabs on this crew.
Free Download: “The White Balloon” – Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler
Below is the first offering from the collaborative EP, Slant of Light (Thrill Jockey), by harpist Mary Lattimore and sound sculptor Jeff Zeigler called "The White Ballon," which you can stream and download for free below. The gentle, breeze-in-the-wind piece and the rest of the album was recorded at Uniform Recording during "a city-stopping snowstorm" earlier this year. You’ll be able to find the duo performing this Saturday alongside many other rad acts at the Kensington Picnic II.
Mo Lowda & the Humble Digging Deep at Ortlieb’s Aug. 7
Mo Lowda & the Humble is an intriguing emerging trio performing at Ortlieb’s tonight. The former Deli Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner creates a sound that smoothly transitions from heavier tenacious rockers, prog-oriented space-stretchers, or smooth hip-shakers. The common thread that binds is an innate ability to find and catch a groove and ride it. That groove steadies the course for those songs that travel far and wide, while providing a launching pad for others or a pocket to get down. Jordan Caiola’s vocals have a certain cool, soulful appeal that intensifies under the appropriate context, digging a little deeper and emerging with a raw guttural response. Mo Lowda & the Humble demonstrate a versatility that introduces openings and allows for transitions that can make for an interesting evening, which will be opened by the airy, indie-folk compositions of Heat Thunder, the silky synth-pop DC songstress Young Summer. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Free Download: “Philadelphia” – Mumblr
Here’s the lead single from Mumblr‘s forthcoming LP, Full of Snakes, called "Philadelphia," which the band declares to be "…a portrait of the city we live in." An earlier, much different, and less polished version of the song appeared on their record, White Jesus, Black God. The new track is available for streaming and free download below, and Full of Snakes will be dropping September 16 via Fleeting Youth Records. They’ll be performing this Saturday in Philly at Rembrandt’s for a Rock to the Future benefit. (Photo by Pete Murray)
The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: The Orange Drop
New Track: “Almost Like Emotion (The Drop)” – A Sunny Day in Glasgow
A Sunny Day in Glasgow recently released their latest LP Sea When Absent (Lefse Records), which is currently our Record of the Month, earlier this summer. The band also just shared a limited-edition bonus EP NO DEATH that is available in select record stores in the UK. Below is its opening track called "Almost Like Emotion (The Drop)," which was recorded during the Sea When Absent sessions.
New Video: “JM” (Live) – Strand of Oaks
Strand of Oaks, a.k.a. Timothy Showalter, recorded a few songs with Out of Town Films before the release of his latest LP HEAL. Below is the first tasting of the session with one of the album’s standouts "JM," which was taped at Berks Warehouse. Also, backing Showalter, you’ll find a cast of talented local fixtures in the Philly music community – Mike Sneeringer (ex-Purling Hiss, ex-The Loved Ones) on drums, Eliza Jones (Buried Beds) on keys, and Deven Craige (Little Big League) on bass. The group is currently in the middle of a massive tour, and will be back in town on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20 at The Boot & Saddle for two sold-out shows.
New Track: “Scott Get The Van, I’m Moving” – Cayetana
Power trio Cayetana just premiered a new song earlier today called "Scott Get The Van, I’m Moving," over at The A.V. Club. The charged-up track is off the band’s forthcoming full-length album, Nervous Like Me, that will be available on September 9 via Tiny Engines. Enjoy! (Photo by Mary Ferrigno)
Little Big League Signs to Run For Cover Records
Congrats to Little Big League for signing to Boston-based Run For Cover Records, which is also home to locals Modern Baseball, Young Statues, and Tigers Jaw! The band’s second LP is expected to come out towards the end of this year. Cheers lady and gents!
Young Statues Opening for The Early November at WCL Aug. 5 & 6
For the next two evenings, Young Statues will open a pair of sold-out shows, headlined by The Early November, upstairs at World Café Live. The quartet brings a youthful exuberance, accompanied by unshielded emotional narrative elements. However, while the lyrics take on a personal shape and sound, the overall instrumental notes are a positive, crisply composed boost of adrenaline. Young Statues reveal enough lyrically to connect on that relatable level, while holding back just enough to not fall in the deep. Get to World Café Live early, and catch them opening, followed by Michigan husband and wife duo Empire Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate), who are set to release a new LP You Will Eventually Be Forgotten, via Count Your Lucky Stars Records, later this month. The Early November will then perform an intimate acoustic set of their greatest hits. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St. 8pm, $15, All Ages – Michael Colavita
New Literature LP Available for Streaming
We certainly had Arab Spring, Literature‘s debut full-length album, on heavy rotation when we first discovered that they had moved from Austin to Philly; so much so, that we, soon after, booked them for one of our Tuesday Tune-Out showcases and last year’s big Deli Philly 5th anniversary bash. It’s taken a moment to get another LP from the group, but it was good to learn that they’ll be releasing their new record, Chorus, on August 19 via Slumberland Records, a fitting home for the quartet, which now consists of Kevin Attics, Nathaniel Cardaci, Seth Whaland, and Chris Schackerman. And you can currently stream Literature’s album in its entirety over at Hype Machine.
