New Music Video: “Yellow Wallpaper” – Creepoid

Posted on:

Though Creepoid recently made a big move to Savannah, GA, the transient band is still keeping ties here in Philly with new member Nick Kulp continuing to work with his previous group Far-Out Fangtooth. Their latest video for "Yellow Wallpaper," off the group’s self-titled LP, is also the directorial debut of local photographer and octopus chandelier sculptor Adam Wallacavage, with help from Eric Weiss. The band is currently on tour with Against Me, and will be returning to Philly on Saturday, October 4 to perform at the TLA with Balance and Composure. (Photo by Adam Wallacavage)

Tender Vision Opening for Beverly at The Boot & Saddle Aug. 12

Posted on:

With their debut LP Trust Lust looming on the horizon, Adrianne Gold and William Sallee (ex-Catnaps), a.k.a. Tender Vision, are set to kick off the bill this evening at The Boot & Saddle. The pairing, which expands in a live format, toes the line, fusing a playful humor, while maintaining a serious tone, as evident in “ I Hate Change.” That ability to lyrically/musically find a gray area could be an avenue that gives them space to cover subjects from an unexpected perspective. The lineup also features the melodic intimate rock-surf groove of quintet, Roof Doctor, and the evening is headlined by Brooklyn-based trio Beverly, which began as a collaboration between Frankie Rose and Drew Citron (Avan Lava) before Rose departed. They released their full-length debut Careers last month via Kanine Records. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Free Download: “Confession” – Bondage & Discipline

Posted on:

Below is the second single from Bondage & Discipline called "Confession," which you can stream and download below. The former guys and gal of The National Rifle continue in the direction that they began to follow towards the end of their previous recording catalogue, as shimmering synths and emotive vocals wash over the octane-fueled jams of yesteryear. Their latest track was recorded at South Philly’s Cambridge Sound Studios with producer, Todd Mecaughey. The group’s debut album is expected to be release in the spring of 2015.

New Video: Kensington Picnic II – Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler

Posted on:

Kensington Picnic II was blessed with great weather this Saturday that fed into good vibes that resonated throughout the day. After a freewheelin’, rock ‘n’ roll set by Spacin’, which included a new fifth member on saxophone and flute, the crowd smoothly transitioned and attentively listened to a mesmerizing set by Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler that welcomed the setting of the sun. You can view and take a listen to part of the performance below, which was recorded and posted by co-event organizers Fire Museum. (Photo by Kyle Andrews)

New Allison Crutchfield EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Swearin‘s Allison Crutchfield just shared a beautiful new seven-song EP entitled Lean In To It that finds her delving into lo-fi pop driven by casio tones and drumbeats. Assisting on bass and vocals as well as co-writing the track "Lupe" is Sam Cook-Parrott (a.k.a. Radiator Hospital), and the combination is one that should be repeated over and over again. Crutchfield’s Swearin’ bandmate Kyle Gilbride also mixed and mastered the record, which you can enjoy in its entirety and purchase below. So now you can "dance like no one’s watching"!

Rosetta Homecoming at KFN Aug. 10

Posted on:

The originators of “metal for astronauts,” Rosetta, celebrate a triumphant return from China by playing one of their two remaining home shows for the year at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Along with touring the Far East, they have become the subject of a full-length documentary film that has been successfully crowdsourced via Indiegogo, and are awaiting Translation Loss Records to release their new EP Flies to Flame, which features experimental studio pieces. So the show will be a precursor to many good things on the horizon, and a reunion with their Tucson, AZ friends, North. Rounding out the lineup will be the super-charged metal outfit, Maniacs on Wheels, and Torrential Downpour. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St, 6pm, $7 – Bill McThrill

Philly Summer Fest at PhilaMOCA Aug. 9

Posted on:

PhilaMOCA hosts another summer Saturday barbecue fest today with Dogs on Acid (ex-Algernon Cadwallader) and friends. This one will also be the album release party for fast-paced, sludge punks Cassilis. It will be a good chance to catch garage-pop trio Amanda X (if somehow you missed all the group’s bazillion local performances this summer), before they embark on a U.S. tour, and find out why so many people have been raving about their debut album Amnesia. Hardcore noise duo Bubonic Bear will bring an ample serving of guitar-laden chaos, and Mike Bell & the Movies will deliver an upbeat dose of melodic indie pop. The show will also feature The Weaks, Sleep Study, and more. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 3:30pm, $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, August 8 – 10

Posted on:
It’s going to be beautiful weather for a picnic this weekend so luckily, Kensington Picnic II is back with a stellar lineup all-day Saturday at the Liberty Vintage Motorcycles yard. One of my favorite bands, Spacin’, is slated for an earlier set in the day so make sure not to miss them, because you never know when you’ll get a chance again. The band recently finished recording their new album, which (I was told) will be released via Richie Records. Some more rad psych rock news, Birds of Maya, who are performing later in the day, will also be returning with a new album that they recorded in the woods of New York. So excited to hear some new tunes from both crews! Filling out the jam-packed bill of local area talent will be Strapping Fieldhands, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler, Fursaxa, Laura Baird, Randall of Nazareth (Randy Huth of Pearls & Brass), and Hohlraum (Joe Winters of Pearls & Brass and Sean McGuiness of Pissed Jeans). Yup, it’s definitely where you want to be this weekend! Liberty Vintage Motorcycles Yard, Frankford Ave. (between Susquehanna & Dauphin), 12pm-8pm, Free, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

Lantern & Laser Background Represent at Everybody Hits Aug. 8

Posted on:

Tonight, a pair of local groups represents half of the bill at DIY space Everybody Hits – both tapping into a place that’s a touch twisted. The duo of Zachary Devereux Fairbrother and Emily Robb come together in Lantern, producing a steady diet of assertive, snarly, fuzzed-out rock n’ roll that touches down on the glam realm with its steady-churning accessibility, while still retaining a stick-to-your-ribs foundation chock full of authoritative personality and primal penetrating instrumentation. Having recently recorded at The Bottle Garden Studios, Lantern could potentially shine light on some new material. Speaking of which and joining in the festivities, Laser Background, the Andy Moholt-driven pop-psych carnival concoction, has also been hard at work on their next album, Correct. Laser Background balances infectious, poppy, playful bursts, simultaneously wrapping that package in a slightly distorted, oddball point of view. This evening’s lineup is rounded out by Staten Island’s Bueno, who approach punk from a dark shadowy synth shadow, and the ongoing sonic experimentations of Zula. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5-$7 Donation, All Ages – Michael Colavita
