New Music Video: “Every St.” – Cookie Rabinowitz

Posted on:

We first learned of Cookie Rabinowitz, which also included Schoolly D at the time, through their hilarious, NSFW animation series. And while Schoolly did make mention of the series possibly being picked up by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim a while back, it sadly still hasn’t materialized. However, Cookie Rabinowitz continue to provide us with some seriously righteous "four eyed soul" that also comes with one of the neatest lyric videos for their latest single, "Every St.," which you can view below. Embrace the good vibes, and learn a little sign language and a few nifty dance moves while your at it!

Alex G Hometown Record Release Show at The Fire Aug. 17

Posted on:
After touring the country for nearly a month in support of his new LP DSU with Orchid Tapes labelmates Elvis Depressedly, Alex G, a.k.a. Alex Giannascoli, will be coming home this evening to The Fire to finally celebrate its release with friends and fans. The humble, lo-fi songwriter has been quietly winning critics and fans over with his mix of grungy yet delicate melodies and introspective, obtuse lyrics. We chatted with him earlier this year when he won The Deli Philly’s Year End Readers’/Fans’ Poll. (You can check out our interview HERE.) Alex G will be joined by Elvis Depressedly, who may not be anymore soon so you don’t want to miss this one, Cold Foamers, and Snoozer. Heads up – it’s an early all-ages show brought to you by The Guild! The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $10, All Ages – Alexis V.

MilkBoy 3rd Anniversary w/The Lawsuits, Mo Lowda & The Humble, and Our Griffins at MilkBoy Philly Aug. 16

Posted on:

MilkBoy Philly celebrates its 3rd anniversary with a fully-stacked three day lineup of FREE SHOWS that already featured the likes of Black Landlord, The Ataris, and Cheerleader. But tonight’s show will be the icing on the cake with The Lawsuits. The band has already had a good summer that saw them playing XPoNential Music Fest and releasing a music video for “Dreaming #26,” off their latest album Cool Cool Cool. They are getting closer to releasing their next EP Tumbled on September 23 via American Diamond Recordings, and you can take a listen to its lead single, “Sweet Marcelle,” below. It will also be a good chance to catch Mo Lowda & The Humble before the beginning of their residency at Bourbon & Branch next month. The former Deli Philly Featured Artist(s) Poll winners have been gaining some headway, recently being featured on Huffington Post. Kicking things off will be the always earnest, emotive tunes of Our Griffins. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, Free, 21+ (Photo by Rachel Barrish) – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, August 15 – 17

Posted on:
Since 2007, The Mighty Paradocs have utilized their Rockers event as a way to showcase POC punks, lady rockers, and political comrades not typically included in punk or rock scenes in a DIY fashion. And whether it was done at Tritone, Kung Fu Necktie, or another Philly venue, it has always created some badass lineups. This will hold true while they host the 4th Annual Rockers BBQ Weekend at various venues. While we were stoked to see Trophy Wife deliver a killer performance at LAVA Space last night, and look forward to what Baptist Preachers and cranes are flying may deliver tonight; it’s Saturday’s showcase at The Boot & Saddle that should deliver in classic Rockers’ nostalgia when The Mighty Paradocs take the stage with friends The Kominas and Brooklyn’s Shady Hawkins. It will also be a good time to catch the sisterhood punk antics of Bad Canoes before they go on tour. Since releasing the turbo-charged Sisterhood Is Powerful a few months back, the band, which features Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster, has earned a good amount of buzz, filmed music videos in shopping malls, and has been trying to get Polar Seltzer sponsorship. This evening’s lineup will also include the Joe Jordan Experiment, Providence’s Downtown Boys, and Haram. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St, 6pm, $7, 21+ (Photo by Tara) – Bill McThrill

RIP Dante Bucci

Posted on:
I received some very sad news yesterday about the passing of a friend and longtime contributor to the Philly music community, Dante Bucci. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, there is a chance that you might have come across him backing various local artists like Mutlu and Amos Lee on percussions or at his own solo performances, but you may have most likely come across the bearded, long-haired fellow on the streets of Center City at lunchtime or after work, in Old City during First Friday, or on the campgrounds of Philly Folk Fest tapping on a rare, flying saucer-like instrument called the Hang drum. He was a master of it and in my humble opinion, the premier Hang drum player in the world. You can find a collection of his demonstration and performance videos with millions of views on YouTube. Dante instantly loved the instrument after discovering its existence, and he enjoyed educating others about it. He was a gifted musician and special person. He came from a kind, music-loving family, and shared what he had learned from them with others. Philly Folk Fest started last night, and will be going on through the weekend. It was his favorite event to attend every year, and he was a fixture there, whether as an official performer on stage, a volunteer, or a random entertainer in the campgrounds. He will be missed this weekend and way beyond it. I’d like to offer my condolences to his family, girlfriend and friends for their tragic and sudden loss. Also, my apologies because this is the first time that I had to write something like this about a friend, and I know that these few of words could hardly encapsulate all that he has meant to others. RIP Dante. (Photo by Jump Philly) – Q.D. Tran

BITBY Summer Sounds at TLA Aug. 15

Posted on:

This evening, at the Theatre of Living Arts, you’ll find Doylestown’s Commonwealth Choir as the featured headliners of a stacked local area bill. The guys are still living off the buzz of their debut EP Shirtless and their energetic live performances. Shorty boy-boy has been taking a bit of hiatus while frontman Joshua Pannepacker has joined the band Cheerleader. But they have recently resurfaced with a new music video for “Crickets,” and will be back to deliver a live set where you can expect the unexpected. Since Air is Human unveiled an unreleased track from their upcoming album on Y-Not Radio, there’s a good chance that you may be treated to more new material. The rest of BITBY Summer Sounds will be rounded out by Pine Barons, Weekender, and Mark Lanky. Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St., 7pm, $11, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Tim Motzer Record Release Show at JB’s Aug. 14

Posted on:

Tonight, Johnny Brenda’s invites you to experience the intergalactic sonic explorations of guitarist Tim Motzer as he celebrates the release of Live From Star’s End, which is available via Motzer’s label 1k Recordings. The record captures Motzer’s improvisational performance on Chuck Van Zyl’s WXPN Star’s End show, November 3, 2013. Motzer guides the guitar-driven journey through a series of electronic tests, altering and helping to shape the space around him, while melding various textures of sound in the process. On a similar thread, harpist Mary Lattimore develops complex tones, creating an environment that peacefully provides a place for one’s mind to momentarily escape. Having recently released her debut album The Withdrawing Room, Lattimore is also working on an EP, Slant of Light, with the ever-talented producer/musician Jeff Zeigler, which will be available soon via Thrill Jockey Records. Guitar/banjo aficionado Brandon Seabrook, who released his solo debut Sylphid Vitalizers this past June, occupies the middle slot, and a collaborative performance could spice up the evening’s conclusion. New Track: “Airplanes” – Conversations

Posted on:

Earlier this year, Coversations with Enemies revealed that they’d be changing their band name by shortening it to Conversations, which made sense to us with all their lineup changes over the years. The quartet just shared their latest romantic little ditty yesterday called "Airplanes." It was recorded at Headroom Studios with Joe Reinhart, and mastered at Spice House studios.

Lindsay crew, bandmate Jake Ewald, Evan Moorehead, and Andrew Kirnan. Steady Hands has a new EP, entitled Brandy Of The Damned, coming out on August 19 via Lame-O Records, but you’ll be able to grab your copy beforehand at this evening’s performance. Also on the bill are Florida’s Echo Base and Henrietta and New Jersey’s Lake Effect. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $8, All Ages (Photo by Ally Newbold) – H.M. Kauffman
