We are very excited to announce The Deli Philly’s 6th Anniversary Party, which will also be a celebration of our favorite holiday – Halloween, so start getting your costumes ready! If you’ve ever attended any of our showcases, then you should know that we like to throwdown, and on Saturday, October 25 at PhilaMOCA, that’s just what we intend to do in a BIG way. Co-headlining the evening will be our old pals and beloved psychedelic groove-making machines Grimace Federation, and they’ll be joined by one of Philly’s finest, rising hip-hop stars S.T.S., a.k.a. Sugar Tounge Slim. We’ll also have more surprises in store for the evening so you better be ready for one seriously fun, debaucherous night. Thank you to all who have continually supported The Deli throughout the years – you fuckin’ rock!
Spaceship Aloha Opening for Sinkane & Helado Negro at JB’s Oct. 7
Now that Man Man‘s tour schedule has slowed down for a bit, it seems that the band’s drummer/producer Christopher Sean Powell, a.k.a. Pow Pow, Powserati, PayPow, will have more time to explore new musical terrain with his electro-tropicalia side project Spaceship Aloha. The one-man band finds its origin on the island of Maui, where Powell and his wife "were married by a mystic in the rainforest on the Road to Hana." He became engrossed by the Hawaiian music that dominated the FM airwaves in his 1987 Toyota Camry rental. Upon his return to Philly, the Polynesian influence began to seep into the beats that he created with his trusty Akai MPC 1000, which led to the creation of Spaceship Aloha’s debut album Universe Mahalo: Volume #1 (Data Garden). The mothership will be touching down on the stage of Johnny Brenda’s this evening when Powell opens for Brooklyn’s Sinkane and Ecuadorean sound sculptor Helado Negro. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

It was written and recorded over this past summer while she was in Tokyo, Japan.

Ryshon Jones Opening for Big K.R.I.T. at TLA Oct. 6
Ryshon Jones began his journey as a rhymeslinger after his cousin broke into a car in his neighborhood and found some instrumental cassettes, back in 1998. However, Jones didn’t truly discover his love and passion for rapping until he met a man who shared that his music "helped him stop popping pills." Those snapshots of his daily life are certainly good insights to help us understand the influences that have directed him down the path as a cerebral emcee. Ryshon Jones will be dropping his real-world epiphanies this evening at the TLA opening for Mississippi’s Big K.R.I.T. TLA, 334 South St., $18, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
New Music Video: “Hollow” – Alex G
Below is a new music video from Alex G, a.k.a. Alexander Giannascoli, for the track "Hollow," a genteel ditty with a touch of lo-fi grit from his latest full-length release DSU. It mixes performance footage with creepy cuts of a masked man that fits right into the upcoming holiday season. The video was directed by John Vizzone.
Nothing Goes Acoustic for Last Philly Show of the Year at Ortlieb’s Oct. 5
This evening a small crowd will gather at Ortlieb’s to witness Nothing’s last Philly show of the calendar year. This performance offers an opportunity to capture the group’s songs from a rare point of view as an acoustic set (a glimpse of the bonus material that will be featured on A389 Records reissue of Downward Years to Come V2.0). The band will be taking its solemn yet joyous songs and reimagining them through a different instrumental lens. Joining in on this Sunday special will be the emotive-fueled rock of Sad Actor and the acoustic singer/songwriter stylings of Mark Lanky. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St. 8pm, $15, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Mash Bash Philly w/Banned Books, Needle Points, Drone Ranger & Delicate Steve at Underground Arts Oct. 4
Tonight, Bonfire and Brooklyn Brewery present a FREE evening of music featuring a foursome of bands that push sonic boundaries in a fun exciting manner. Noise rock with delightful illuminating pop bursts, providing various evolving textures conjoining odd ends together in a manner that has one’s ears on a high–alert and maintains an accessible path, this is the mode of Banned Books. With a fresh 7” Cripple Street due out via PaperCup Music next week and a full-length album on the way, Needle Points is a band that you want to keep on your radar. The group has a knack for nestling a down-home, bass-thumping groove smack dab in the middle of their unfiltered psych-rock journey, swaying you into submission with thick raunchy guitar riffs that naturally extend the threshold and vocals that etch out a pathway to the space boogie. While your on the intergalactic trail, Drone Ranger weaves in and out of the cosmic with moments of acceleration amid relaxing lower end lulls of relaxing cruise-control jams. Headlining the show with a premium blend of experimental tasty guitar notes and ironed pop sensibility will be Deli NYC favorite Delicate Steve. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, FREE, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Weekend Warrior, October 3 – 5
A Pynk Affair 2 at Yards Brewing Company Oct. 3
New Track: “Tomorrow Always Knows” – Cheerleader
Indie-pop five-piece Cheerleader is getting ready to drop its new EP On Your Side next week. Today, we share with you their latest single from the album, entitled "Tomorrow Always Knows," which one can’t help but infer to be a nod to their love of popular music. While its verses may feel like a familiar, sped-up version of an old-timey classic like The Dixie Cups’ "Chapel of Love," you are instantly levitated and hooked once the song’s chorus kicks in – "There’s nothing to save you – a digital refugee…" Chearleader will be performing next in Philly on Wednesday, October 22 at MilkBoy Philly. New Music Video: “B&E” (Acoustic) – Nothing
As Nothing gets ready for their final show in Philly this year at Ortlieb’s this Sunday, they have a new music video to accompany the unplugged event. It’s fittingly for an acoustic version of "B&E" that originally appeared on their 2013 breakout album Guilty of Everything. This track along with other previously recorded acoustic takes will appear as bonuses on the band’s forthcoming re-issue of Downward Years to Come V2.0, which will be available via A389 Records. Tickets for this weekend are "nearly gone" so grab yours while you can.
