Ghost Gum Opening for Literature at JB’s Oct. 21

Posted on:

There’s something to be said for the ability to bridge a gap, and Ghost Gum, opening this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, finds a way to do just that. Merging a constant, driving, spatially aware, shoegaze-y instrumental setup, throbbing bass lines, smash-spreading percussion and those slithering guitar licks, all accented by Carolyn Hayes’ calm guiding vocals. The music absorbs into you, in a peacefully tenacious manner, moving at a high-end pace but finessing each turn with an experienced approaching, while cruising at full speed. The dance exciting new-wave nodding Royal Shoals, whose sound pulls pieces from across a wide board, serves as the filling of tonight’s local musical sandwich with headlining act Literature‘s nonstop, jangly burst of power pop keeping you on your feet at JB’s all night long. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Best Time Ever” – Khari Mateen

Posted on:

While Khari Mateen‘s latest single "Best Time Ever" might have missed its opportunity to be your summertime anthem for 2014, it does reveal a more fun, lively side of the multi-dimensional artist than we’ve ever heard from him before. Now, we’re kind of interested in hanging with him for an evening and seeing where the night takes us. You can stream the track below. And "kids, don’t do drugs."

New Music Video: “TEN THIRTY ONE” – The Ghost In You

Posted on:

Besides having the ability to write and record beautifully haunting ballads, Billy Polard, a.k.a. The Ghost In You, has the knack for tugging at our heartstrings with his self-directed music videos. His latest for "TEN THIRTY ONE" perfectly captures the weighted mood of the fall season and the glimpses of youthful joy that we once could attain simply by donning a Halloween costume. "Inspired by my memories of growing up in my old neighborhood, the leaves changing, carving jack o lanterns, my mom dressing up like a witch, the homemade costumes she made for me and my brothers, watching scary movies, and everything else that comes with the Halloween season… I hope hearing it triggers the same nostalgia and emotions that I felt writing it." The track will appear on his upcoming album as well as the soundtrack to the horror flick Honeyspider.

Revisit Slow Animal at The Barbary Oct. 19

Posted on:
Alex Karaba’s guitar tears like a buzzsaw through buttery vibrant pop hooks, while Dan Colanduno pummels the skins with determined ferocity. That’s what you’ll find on Slow Animal‘s latest EP The Other Side, an album definitely worth revisiting. The bonus is that they’re even better live. If you missed the duo’s performance last night at Golden Tea House or just simply can’t get enough of them, then you’ll have your chance this evening when they open on another solid all-ages bill at The Barbary with Twin Peaks, Tweens, and Public Access TV, which is presented by WKDU. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 6:45pm, $10, All Ages – Alexis V.

mewithoutYou Homecoming w/Hop Along at The Troc Oct. 18

Posted on:
Post-hardcore/experimental rock band mewithoutYou is coming back home for the final night of its 10th anniversary tour of Catch For Us The Foxes. The record was released almost exactly 10 years ago to this date by Tooth & Nail Records. The fan-favorite album features the kind of harsh schizophrenic pontifications from lead singer Adam Weiss, inspired largely by religious works as well as his own dark encounters that the band returned to on their latest album, Ten Stories, released in 2012. mewithoutYou suggests getting to The Troc early so you don’t miss out on their “best line-up of openers in ages”: The Appleseed Cast and Hop Along, local pop-punk-ish outfit, who recently opened for Philly favorites Dr. Dog at the Mann Center back in September. The group is led by Frances Quinlans often raspy, breathy vocals that are always both bewitching and alluring. Be there to support mewithoutYou’s homecoming! The Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch St., 7 pm, $18, All Ages – Emily DiCicco

Rosetta Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Oct. 18

Posted on:
Rosetta has already had a triumphant 2014 that has featured them releasing The Anaesthete, going on a big tour of China, and crowd sourcing a full-length documentary on Indiegogo. However, the band still has more in store for its fans this evening, celebrating the release of its latest EP, Flies to Flame (Translation Loss Records) at Boot & Saddle. Since the album is a release of experimental studio pieces, it will be a very rare occasion when they’ll be playing them on stage, and it won’t be happening tonight. But they’ll be doing something even bigger as it will be one of the first two shows that sees them unveiling all new material as a five-piece that features Eric Jernigan of City of Ships on second guitar. The performance, which is also the bands last of 2014, will also feature NYC’s Tiger Flowers, and it will be a good opportunity to catch Ladder Devils before they release their latest album Clean Hands on November 4. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, October 17 – 19

Posted on:
Brooklyn guitar virtuoso and Landowne-born Steve Gunn still maintains deep roots here in Philly. So much so, he’ll be celebrating the release of his latest record, Way Out Weather, tonight at PhilaMOCA. Joining him on the bill is a couple of the finest acts in the City of Brotherly Love’s underground music community. The evening will have raucous start with rad garage-psych outfit Spacin’. The group is easily one of my favorite bands in town, and I can’t wait for their new album, which will be available via Richie Records, to come out. And things will a bit quieter but in the best way possible when talented combination of Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler take the stage to mesmerize the audience with interstellar soundscapes. It’s going to be an eclectic evening of music, but one worth catching from start to finish. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Alexis V.

Needle Points 7” Release Show at KFN Oct. 17

Posted on:
Philly psych/garage rock outfit Needle Points promises a real late-night party at Kung Fu Necktie for its record release show in honor of the band’s latest 7”, Cripple Street (PaperCup Music), which features two new tracks (“Cripple Street” and “Black Hurricane”). The group’s new material reveals a poppier side of the five-piece, with more of a folk rock influence than on their debut EP, Bom Tugangu. Producing similar kinds of conscious-expanding jams as this evening’s headliner will be local crew The Orange Drop and The Golden Brass (from Brooklyn). It’s a special night for The Orange Drop as well. Lead guitarist Blaze Kozlik has been out as of late with a broken finger; this show will serve as his return to the stage. The Orange Drop, which released its first EP, Drone Pop, in January, is currently working on the group’s next. As for tonight’s bill, you can count on some serious good vibes and maybe even some modern-day hippies. Come out, “turn on, tune in, drop out,” and get down! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N Front St, 11pm, 21+, $5 – Emily DiCicco
