Weekend Warrior, October 31 – November 2

Posted on:
Grand masters of Halloween ceremonies TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb return to Underground Arts to host their fifth annual Rock and Roll Murdershow tonight. But unlike The Revenge of Michael Myers or the Dream Child, this ghoulish sequel is set to deliver thrills and chills for all the right reasons. This edition will feature 8 great bands taking over 2 stages. With an opening murdershow performance that consists of the only orchestra to be fronted by a theremin virtuoso, The Divine Hand Ensemble will be conjuring up a set of horror movie classics. Mumblr will be making a triumphant return from tour, which was in support of their debut full-length album Full of Snakes, and Tutlie will be revitalized with its latest incarnation. Lantern‘s amped-up, guitar-fueled performance will likely reveal some new tracks from the recording session that they had over the summer. And Mo Lowda & the Humble are set to throwdown what is slated to be their last Philly show of the year. Rounding out this phantasmagorical lineup will be Northern Arms and the Bernhardt Family Band. BTW: We caught up with TJ Kong, a.k.a. Dan Bruskewicz, to ask him some festive questions that we had on our mind, which you can check out HERE. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – Bill McThrill

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Seagulls

Posted on:
One of the bigger surprises of 2014 for us was discovering the band Seagulls’ debut LP Great Pine. That’s why when they took it down from their Bandcamp page, it was also a big disappointment. Well, the band will be releasing it on vinyl via Yellow K Records so if you slept on it the first time around when we made it The Deli Philly’s September Record of the Month, you’ll have a second opportunity to soak in its dreamy, delicate vocals and tastefully arrange mix of acoustic instrumentation and 8-bit flourishes. Until its re-release, you can read our interview with the group HERE from when they recently won our Featured Artist(s) Poll.

“Real Halloween Party” at Toby’s Purgatory Oct. 31

Posted on:
It’s gonna be a punk Halloween tonight at Toby’s Purgatory, featuring locals only that represent a variety of sounds from the genre in the city. Adding a refreshing female voice to the scene is Cool Points’ Jill Mallon. She leads the noise-rock crew with a straightforward sass and aggression that will charm your pants off, but she’s definitely “not your bro”! Cool Points will be joined by headliners Mumblr, who are pulling double duty, warming up earlier in the night at TJ Kong’s Halloween Murder Show. You’ll also find antagonistic punks Cousin Brian stirring up trouble while we patiently wait for the follow-up to their debut LP First. Rounding out the bill will be hardcore outfit Disinterest and pop-punkers Cold Foamers. Get sweaty, and celebrate at the “Real Halloween Party” the right way – fast and loud. Toby’s Purgatory, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 6pm, All Ages – Emily DiCicco

New Track: “Young Planes” – Church Girls

Posted on:

Fledgling indie/folk rock outfit Church Girls takes a turn in an edgier direction in the vein of Courtney Barnett on the band’s new track "Young Planes," which we highly encourage the group to push further. Led by Mariel Beaumont and Evan Anders, the five-piece tackle the growing pains that most of us eventually end up going through with age, while Beaumont’s speak-singing verses play the standout roll in the song. They’ll be performing next in Philly on Monday, November 3 at The Arts Bank Cabaret.

New DRGN KING LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

DRGN KING has released Baltimore Crush the follow-up to their 2013 debut Paragraph Nights, via Bar None Records. Its sound much-like the lineup of the Dominic Angelella-fronted group has evolved. Baltimore Crush echoes of its predecessor, while taking steps forward, delivering personal heartfelt emotions and high-voltage instrumentation, blended with danceable, more casual grooves and surf-rock aesthetics. It’s that calm endearing honesty and sensitivity that allows you to lay back and ride the wave or go full-throttle at any moment. You can now stream the LP in its entirety at AllMusic.com.

Teen Men Opening for Seoul at JB’s Oct. 29

Posted on:

Teen Men is the charming pop project from the Spinto Band‘s Nick Krill and Joe Hobson. They joined forces with visual artists Catherine Maloney (photographer) and Albert Birney (filmmamker), mixing the modalities and creating a live performance synced to a video projection that encourages interaction between the band members and its audience. What happens? You get a unique concert experience that you might not want to miss when they open this evening at Johnny Brenda’s for Montreal ambient-pop outfit Seoul. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

GrandeMarshall Opening for Freddie Gibbs at Underground Arts Oct. 28

Posted on:

Yes – as the months flash by and the end of another year stands starkly in the distance, one can’t help wonder: Will GrandeMarshall‘s official label album ever see the light of day? Hope continues to glimmer in my eyes and rattle in my ears with his latest video for "Burning Rubber Freestyle," another single off his long-awaited My Brother’s Keeper, which still hasn’t received a drop date from Fool’s Gold. I guess that we’ll just have to hear some of the tracks live tonight at Underground Arts, along with hopefully others from his brilliant 800 and Mugga Man mixtapes, when he opens for hard-livin’, Gary, Indiana badass Freddie Gibbs. This one-two combination is a welcomed pummelling for hip-hop fans, and I’m guessing that the venue’s backstage will surely be filled with a hazy cloud of blunt smoke so don’t expect to get out of the basement at a reasonable hour for work the next day. I suggest that you already start coughing or mentioning that you’re feelin’ some sort of way if you haven’t taken tomorrow off yet. That’s my protip for ya; you can take it or leave it. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $18, 21+ – Alexis V.

New Track: “The Ballad Of Freer Hollow” – Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band

Posted on:

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel have shared the second single, "The Ballad Of Freer Hollow," from their new album Intesity Ghost. Well, it’s definitely not what you’d consider a typical single in the traditional sense, clocking in at over 11 minutes with a drone-y feedback segment. The record is available today via No Quarter Records, and their Philly release show will take place on Wednesday, November 5 at Boot & Saddle.
