The Mellowells Providing a Natural Ease at Lavender Town Nov. 15

Posted on:

There’s a natural ease to The Mellowells, a gentle steady climb of sound piecing together a denser/stronger overall product along the way. So, when a song reaches the top looking down, you don’t realize how far you’ve traveled. That fluid, rolling energetic groove and vocals that have a stream of consciousness, spoken-diary/observation feel with just enough aches to squeeze into your house and a raw outpouring of instrumentation once the band reaches the pinnacle. Tonight, The Mellowells are a part of the birthday celebration at Lavender Town. Speaking of which, Mumblr has that manner of developing catchy pop-punk tunes that form around Nick Morrison’s versatile vocals and then explode with instrumental fervor. The show also features the emotive-lined rock of Clique and intentionally rough around the edges, single candle illuminated catharsis of Abi Reimold with its jagged cutting guitars and smooth but penetrating vocals. Lavender Town, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info),7pm, $3-$5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, November 14 – 16

Posted on:
Just before SideOneDummy released Restorations‘ latest album LP3 the indie post-punk quintet embarked on a big tour of the US. The impressive nine-track album that was cut at Miner Street Studios and the bands homecoming is certainly worthy of a big celebration, which is happening at First Unitarian Church this Saturday, and they’ll be joined by a great supporting cast of locals. Pop-punk femme fatales Cayetana have had a huge year that culminated with the release of their debut full-length, Nervous Like Me, and a spot on the Brooklyn Vegan CMJ Showcase. And the girls are poised to move onto an even bigger 2015. What started out as a one-man project by Everyone Everywhere’s Matthew Scottoline has evolved into the lush power-pop trio that is Hurry. The show will also feature Three Man Cannon, who will be playing tunes from their latest, Pretty Many People. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8pm, $13, All Ages – Bill McThrill

All Swag & Blunts w/Ground Up at Union Transfer Nov. 14

Posted on:

It’s gonna be all swag and blunts at Union Transfer tonight. Temple University’s own Ground Up, who have been making beats since Freshman Orientation in 2008, produce the kind of pop-y hip hop (think Taylor Gang) that hardcore rappers are sometimes quick to dismiss. However, it’s not easy to write off the guys who have opened for the likes of Rick Ross, Meek Mill and Chiddy Bang, released an impressive nine mixtapes in just three years, collaborated with the likes of Action Bronson, and have their hands in their own clothing company, MDCCXI Cloth. The collective has some talented openers from across the country, like the ultra-cool Harrisburg-based rapper Mazon (who they’ve collaborated with for tracks like “I Remember” and “Filthy”) and MAVi & Christian Express, coming all the way in from Cali. Local battle rapper Rone is also slated on the bill. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15, All Ages – Emily DiCicco

Mike Bell & the Movies Opening for Nayuta at Eris Temple Arts Nov. 14

Posted on:
Japan’s premier krautrock band Nayuta perform a very rare West Philly house show concert tonight when they play at Eris Temple Arts. And they’ll be backed by an eclectic lineup of local artists. In a short amount of time after the release of their debut album, Nothing Works, Mike Bell & the Movies have become a buzz-worthy power pop band. And when a group features members of acts like Dangerous Ponies, Bandname, and Algernon Cadwallader with the lead singer ballsy enough to get punched and slapped in the face for the sake of shooting an original music video, it’s well-deserved. And their live performances feature that same kind of unbridled energy. Previous winners of our Featured Artist(s) Poll, Forever Lesbians will also show you why they’re ready to gain a following when they play songs from their latest album Love, Respect & Wisdom. Rounding out the lineup will be Lancaster punks 1994! and Blue Smiley. Eris Temple Arts, 602 2. 52 St., 8pm, $5-$7 Donation, All Ages – Bill McThrill

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: The Basement Boys

Posted on:
When you read off the list of artist influences for The Basement Boys, it doesn’t seem surprising that we gravitated towards the band, nominating them for our Featured Artist(s) Poll. And though the group’s name may come from something they learned in Spanish class instead of possibly where they might spend most of their evenings, they are sure to fit in just fine in our ever-growing DIY community. After all, you gotta have a soft spot for a group that gets kicked out of Dobbs after a member strips down to his underwear. Keep it weird, Philly! You can check out the rest of our interview with The Basement Boys HERE.

New Track: “Julia Dream” (Pink Floyd Cover) – The Orange Drop

Posted on:

It should come as no surprise that the band whose debut EP Drone Pop, opening with an indicative, spacey track, ”She Will Get You (High),” also nailed a Pink Floyd cover. On a tripped-out “Julia Dream,” a B-side of the legendary group’s single "It Would Be So Nice," The Orange Drop is at their best, perfectly capturing the song’s quixotic nature and flaunting their true understanding of 60’s psych-pop. For the mellotron and organ, they brought in their friend Mike Kiker from soul-influenced, acid-rock outfit St. James & The Apostle to do an impressive rendition of Rick Wright’s keys. Check out the track below! Warning: It might leave you feeling like you’re wandering around an enchanted forest…on shrooms.

Madalean Gauze Letting Loose on a New Trail at The Troc Nov. 13

Posted on:

Madalean Gauze occupies the middle slot this evening at The Troc bridging the gap between the aptly named singer-songwriter Dylan Folkes and the soulfully melodic melting pot of music in Ju-Taun. With a fresh EP in the works following last spring’s robust American War, Madalean Gauze’s sound takes it’s initial step in a traditional folk/Americana field, but doesn’t anchor down in that place, using it as a home-base or jumping off point. To a certain extent, she welcomes listeners in with these familiar comforts – sweet yet steering along the well-worn trails. However, locked in, the true power of the instrumentation is let loose allowing a new trail to be etched. The Trocadero (Balcony), 1003 Arch St., 8:30pm, $7, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Torito EP Release Show at The Fire Nov. 12

Posted on:
You don’t really know what to expect when you see a man take the stage wearing a leather bull mask with large white horns. In the case of Torito, you find an up-and-coming emcee that has a true gift for wordplay. While other rappers may rely on simple to the point of nauseating, repetitive hooks and wack-ass verses that somehow find their way to the mainstream radio, this rhymeslinger’s mastery of verbiage, hot beats that can direct you to where the party’s at, and razor sharp wit is exactly why you need to get some Torito tracks into your rotation. He’ll be celebrating the release of his new EP Crushing Rhymes Eviscerating All Matadors at The Fire this evening. The album’s opener “Gordon Bombay” is destined to be your new jam when “letting green grass flambé.” And check out one of his earlier tracks called “Simon Cowell”! I wish that it would automatically play whenever I entered and exited a room. “Before I leave to watch the Flyers at a hockey bar, I want to thank you all for coming – like a bukake star.” Classic! And it doesn’t hurt that he is a Philly sports fan. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave, 9pm, $5, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Hot Guts Opening for Dream Police at Underground Arts Nov. 11

Posted on:
Hot Guts, which features the combination of Wes Russell and Shari Vari (Void Vision), continue to travel down their dark and winding path of music with the band relying more heavily on drum-machine beats and elongated synth notes cutting through them. The group just released its first LP as a duo yesterday, entitled Wilds, via Avant! Records. And tonight, they’ll welcome its inception in Underground Arts recently renovated Black Box alongside fellow locals Harsh Vibes, where metal and noise meet LSD. The bands will also be playing host to Dream Police, which is made up of members of The Men, and Brooklyn’s Honey. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Alexis V.
