Illinois Record Release Show at JB’s Feb. 21

Posted on:

Genre-spanning, local area elder statesmen of indie rock Illinois are set to celebrate the release of their fifth album Shine at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The bold, multi-layered project was over three years in the making for the Bucks County natives, and the end result is a carefree blend that’s equal parts indie-folk and pop-rock. The latest track from Satellite Hearts, “Doing Things Right,” is another new song that piqued my interest recently. And tonight will be a good time to catch the trio before they open for Dean Ween next month. The show will also feature a savvy member of the Philly DJ crew Illvibe Collective, DJ Skipmode, who will pulling double duty as part of the hip-hop duo, Electric City. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201. N Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, February 20 – 22

As they work on new material, indie-punk four-piece Swearin’ headlines a lineup that runs three deep tonight at PhilaMOCA. The group has that peeking-through-the-window, un-shaded honesty; however, on the same token, there lies elements of unforgiving brute-force instrumentation. That multiple view sound exhibiting sincerity and strength, while inviting you in and then pushing you back, establishing a dynamic you’ll keep returning to. Michael Cantor, a.k.a. The Goodbye Party (formerly of The Ambulars), whose Silver Blues was The Deli Philly’s January Record of the Month, is the meat in this evening’s sandwich (or veggies for all you vegetarians/vegans). The Goodbye Party juxtaposes contemplative ambient tunes with quick shots of power-pop and rust-worn rockers, pointing you in whichever direction the momentary tale dictates. Bassist Jon Rybicki (Radiator Hospital) leads the band Attendant, whose live lineup also includes Ashley Arnwine (Pinkwash), Jen Twigg (The Ambulars), and John McLean (Dead Dog, Todd Killings). They open the night with their slightly off-kilter take on pop rock, and recently dropped a new EP Sun Room last month. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Clique, Loose Tooth, Ghost Gum & Mumblr Split Cassette Release Show at FUC Feb. 20

Posted on:
It doesn’t get that much more DIY than self-releasing a quadruple split cassette. The late Ted Nguyent has spawned two new projects, emo outfit Clique and pop-punk crew Loose Tooth. They’ll be sharing space on the tape with promising post-punk four-piece Ghost Gum and genre-jumping alt rockers Mumblr. All four bands will be on hand this evening to celebrate its release at the First Unitarian Church. First folks through the door will receive a free copy of the cassette and poster, while supplies last. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Bill McThrill

New Music Video: “The Sunshine of Your Youth” – Cheerleader

Posted on:

Check out pop-rock quintet Cheerleader’s new music video for “The Sunshine of Your Youth,” the title track off their forthcoming debut LP, which is schedule for release on May 19 via Bright Antenna Records. It was directed by Alexander Alexandrov, and meshes a family photo shoot with a performance by the band, demonstrating a somewhat melancholy nostalgia despite a bubbly energy. Catch Cheerleader at Union Transfer on April 23 when their tour with The Wombats comes into town.

The Deli Philly’s Best Emerging Artists of 2014 Poll – FINAL RESULTS: 1. Sheer Mag, 2. Nothing, 3. Cheerleader & More

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Philly Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we do enjoy seeing what everyone has been into!

Kudos to rock ‘n’ rollers Sheer Mag (pictured and streaming) for winning the overall poll and and certainly impressing many with their debut EP 7"!

Also, big thumbs up to heavy shoegaze outfit Nothing, who released our March 2014 Record of the Month, and rising indie popsters Cheerleader.

Here is how it all went down: First, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then, we polled a list of 30+ Philly music scene enthusiasts/experts (our jury), and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. We polled our local writers, and we also requested fans and readers to vote for their favorite. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are interested in geeking out in all the subtleties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules HERE. But if all you care about is the awesome new music Philly produced in the 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Lushlife & YIKES the ZERO Opening for Kool Keith at KFN Feb. 19

Posted on:

Legendary alien emcee Kool Keith will be gracing the stage of Kung Fu Necktie once again this evening for a sold-out show. Though he already performed last night (due to popular demand), this showcase is the one you want to be at with its killer local supporting lineup. Multi-talented producer/emcee Lushlife will be coming out of performance hibernation for this special event. Lush has been quiet of late, and we can only hope that it is because he’s been focused in the lab preparing to drop a bomb of beats and rhymes on the world with his long-awaited follow-up to Plateau Vision. Also returning this evening to the Front Street watering hole is YIKES the ZERO and his DJ Caliph-NOW. YIKES has been a perfect pairing with our headliner for this two-night run. His eccentric releases and willingness/ability to collaborate with other artists represent what Kool Keith has accomplished throughout his storied career. This event is surely a celebration of the road less traveled in hip hop! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7pm, $20 (Sold Out), 21+ (Lushlife Photo by Meredith Kleiber) – Q.D. Tran

New Video: Dreams Don’t Chase Themselves – Hezekiah

Posted on:

This short film Dreams Don’t Chase Themselves chronicles producer/emcee Hezekiah‘s journey as he dreams of/envisions his fears and fights to overcome them. Written by Michael Beon and directed by Embassy & Hezekiah, the film’s scenes correspond to songs found on the album of the same name, and include segments of tracks “Spirits Moves Through All Things,” “Coming Back is Harder,” and “Fake It.” This album isn’t one that you should sleep on.

New Video: The Castle Inn Sessions – Lewis & Clarke

Posted on:

Shot by Dan Papa & Larry DeMark and recorded by Don Sternecker at Mix-O-Lydian Studios, this Castle Inn Session captures Lewis & Clarke, as a group, performing five songs from their album Triumvirate (La Société Expéditionnaire). There’s a haunting elegance as if the music will stir up the ghosts of the Delaware Water Gap’s past. Or better – with its cold classic black & white aesthetic, the band momentarily inhabited the storied legend.

Share Regrets, Hopes & Dreams w/Roof Doctor at Bourbon & Branch Feb. 18

Posted on:

Before going into hibernation to work on a new record, Roof Doctor headlines the lineup at Bourbon & Branch this evening. With a new configuration, sans saxophone, the band will certainly sound different; however, what remains are truly revealing songs that play like a combination of open diary/internal observations. Those personal snapshots exposed over a loose surf-rocking backdrop, endear in a relatable head-clearing exercise, catching a spectrum of regrets, hopes and dreams along the way. Cherokee Red sweeps you up in the comforting breeze of their daydreaming folk-pop amalgamation. With cozy floating melodies and warm inviting vocals, it will seem natural to drift right along with them. The genre-blurring, vocal-driven rock of Those People will energetically open the night.
