Weekend Warrior, March 6 – 8

Posted on:
Beach Slang has been on quite a roll, which includes recently signing to Polyvinyl Records, and that should continue when the trio stops by Union Transfer this Saturday as part of a sold-out show headlined by Cursive. Beach Slang hits you head on as James Snyder’s emotionally alert vocals deliver honest messages that adhere to listeners. Couple that exposed yet controlled vulnerability with dense explosive bursts of instrumentation that send a clean charge through your ears while retaining just enough wear around the edges to feel real with catchy relatable lyrics capable of transforming songs into anthems, and you have a good understanding of why every ticket is accounted for. Not to mention, Tim Kasher-led emotive punk force, Cursive, headlines this night, digging down and naturally hitting a nerve, while producer/musician John Congleton’s (Paper Chase) creepy pop project The Nighty Nite serves as the opener. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15 (Sold Out), All Ages – Michael Colavita

A Very Glam Rock Purim at 1fiftyone Gallery March 6 – 8

Posted on:
The drinking of Saint Patrick’s Day and the costumed revelry of Halloween combine during stylish nights of glam rock-infused interactive musical theatre in honor of the Jewish holiday Purim. A Very Glam Rock Purim has been a tradition for Shwaman Josh (of The Really Cooks) for quite sometime, and this year, he took it to a whole new level by renting a theater space for three nights, writing friends into a the interactive play, and getting wine ready for the celebration. The sold-out event kicks off tonight at 1fiftyone Gallery & Performance Space, and features lavish rock icon-inspired characters like Freddy Mordechai, Haman Boo-wie, Ziggy Starberg, and the Kiss-le Guards. Also, CDs of all the songs will be available this year. L’Chaim! 1fiftyone Gallery, 151 N. 3rd St. (Behind Cafe Ole via Quarry Street), 8:30pm, Sold Out, All Ages – Bill McThrill

New Track: “American Smile” – Creepoid

Posted on:

Though Creepoid is currently setting up shop in Savannah, GA, there ties still remain strong here in Philly. We’re always interested to hear new material from the grungy psych-rock four-piece and former Deli Philly Best Emerging Artist Year End Poll Winner. The band just shared the first single, "American Smile," from its forthcoming full-length album entitled Cemetery Highrise Slum, and also announced that the LP is slated for release on June 23 via Collect Records. It was produced and mixed by Peter Mavrogeorgis (The National, Sharon Van Etten, etc.). Creepoid is presently on tour out west with A Place To Bury Strangers, and will be heading across the pond for the first time this spring as a group to do a run of shows in the UK with Pity Sex.

New Track: “a man that says no” – NAH

Posted on:

Drummer/producer NAH has a new track called "a man that says no," off his latest release Nobody Cares What Happens, No One’s Interested (Ranch Records). Combining skilled kit work with electronic samples, the sound sculptor continues to push the bondaries of hip hop and prove why he deserves our attention. NAH is a rare gem and a good example of what interesting hybrids you’ll find coming out of Philly’s underground.

Take Communion w/Son Little at MilkBoy Philly March 4

Posted on:

It kind of makes perfect sense that Son Little, a.k.a. Aaron Livingston, is headlining Communion night at MilkBoy Philly this evening. The son of a preacher, you can hear the influences of gospel choirs and sermons that might have filled his Sundays as a child. Livingston will take his place at the pulpit tonight where he’ll be joined throughout the evening by local singer-songwriter Aaron Parnell Brown, Brooklyn synth-popsters SKYES, the UK’s Bobby Long, and Brayton Bowman. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., $13, 7pm, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

"It’s 2045, as the Earth is overcome with waste and pollution, it becomes less inhabitable for the human race. You find yourself in your spacecraft heading towards galactic realms, in search of life… this plays on your stereo." That’s the scenario created by producer Ill Clinton for his latest LP Vapor Cave. Embrace the Fuzz w/Tangiers at Petting Zoo March 3

Posted on:

Fuzzed-out, lo-fi melodic rockers Tangiers perform tonight at the Petting Zoo. The quartet brings a decidedly up-tempo, percussion-driven sound with vocals delivered through a cosmic membrane and instrumentation that retains unapologetic dirt-under-the-fingernails authenticity, taking the time to methodically develop a punchy groove before zooming off into space. While you’re out there, you might as well catch the eclectic psych-garage escapades of Time Hitler and the Assholes From Space, because that crew is prepared to push whatever buttons will get the job done along its twisted trek. The lineup is rounded out by a pair of trios – local psych-punk combo Seismic Thrust and the foot-to-the-floor, face-smacking garage rock of Georgia’s Concord America. The Petting Zoo (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita
