Le Fits Record Release Show w/TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb at JB’s April 4

Posted on:

Le Fits are celebrating the arrival of their third LP Fisticuffs (recorded at Hi5 Studio) with an accompanying record release show this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Le Fits sweep one in with their suave demeanor grooves that wash over you like a cold drink after a particularly difficult day. The band develops a fleshed out vibrant pop-rock sound spiked with horns for additional zest. Ben Riesman toes that threshold of pseudo-spoken vocals, smoothly speaking and slyly roping you in as these well-rounded songs grab hold and still maintain an organic loose feel. They are tied neatly together but with plenty of room to breathe. The custom whiskey-barrel growling, foot-stomping folk-blues of TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb will be headlining on this night, returning home after a series of southern dates that included a run at SXSW. Dan Bruskewicz’s authoritative snarly narratives cut a path through the backwoods to a modernized juke joint. The soulful folk, brother-sister-led Bernhardt Family Band kicks off the festivities. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Take advantage of this night because before you know it, they’ll be heading out in May on another cross-country tour with The Early November and Lydia before a trip across the pond this summer. Restorations will be joined on tonight’s bill by Run For Cover Records’ Young Statue and Americana/folk duo Broken Spirit. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – Alexis V.

Pinkwash Record Release Show at LAVA Space April 3

Posted on:

A litany of emotions are vented through an unrelenting display of aggression as the duo of Joey Doubek & Ahley Arnwine team up as Pinkwash. Tonight at LAVA Space, the tandem celebrates the release of their new 7" "Cancer Money"/"Skin" via DC punk outfit Priests’ label Sister Polygon. The album is an adrenaline-loaded series of songs that amps listeners up with its raw forceful nature. Doubek’s vocal styling is a primal war cry that feeds into the musical bombardment of heavy, heart-racing, full-speed distorted guitar and the nonstop stampede of Arwine’s percussion, culminating into a forgiving hurricane of noisy punk prepared to engulf anything that stands in its path. Joining the celebration is Flyherder, providing soothing electro-synth pop with an ever-present percussive pulse. The lineup also includes the intense space-cruising buzz of experimental Montreal noise-rock trio Mands and Brooklyn native/Jacksonville resident drag queen rapper, Twinki. Posted on:

First off, just want to give a shout-out to Fire Museum Presents for keeping Philly weird in the best way possible. Tonight, you’ll find local experimental ambient guitarist Dan Malloy laying down some sonic waves for all to vibe out to at First Banana. Malloy has been flying under the radar for about a decade now in Philly, while continually building and pushing the boundaries of his work. They’ll be hosting NYC duo Dora Beu/Tom Carter. First Banana, 2152 E. Dauphin St., 8pm, $7 – $10 sliding scale, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

New Track: “The Substitute” (The Who Cover) – Dogs on Acid

Posted on:

Dogs on Acid just shared their cover of The Who’s "Substitute," over at Brooklyn Vegan. The recording is for a compilation entitled Teenagers In Love that will be available digitally on April 14 via Known Pleasure Records. The song was originally released as a single in 1966, and it later also found its way on a compilation album, Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, before being re-issued once again in 1976. Dogs On Acid will be releasing their debut LP this summer via Jade Tree Records, and they’re next show in Philly is currently schedule for Monday, April 27 at Johnny Brenda’s, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they popped up on another local bill before then.

The Deli Philly’s April Record of the Month: Skull Cauldron – Sandcastle

Posted on:
Skull Cauldron, Sandcastle’s latest LP, is a sojourn into a dimly lit wilderness. Recorded as a quartet (with the group moving forward without Micah Edwards) at West Philly’s Sex Dungeon, these songs pull you ever deeper into the thick of it with their hauntingly infectious sense of urgency and balance.

Album opener, “Atlantis Trance,” percolates as the guitar, bass, and drums tightly co-exist in a relaxed yet spring-loaded groove that is reminiscent to classic Talking Heads, while the quick-paced, tongue-twisting vocals run through a hypnotic, mythical tale. Continuing in a similar vain, “Wolf With No Eyes” is led by a spiraling guitar riff, reinforced with acoustic strums and low end that conjures ups an atmosphere of danger, climbing into the chorus: “Think I’m obsessive compulsive/I think I’ll think myself to death/Need a therapist or an alchemist to toxify my mind I guess.” This subtle searching of mental anguish grabs a hold of the listener, cautiously traversing the exploratory musical terrain. Casually, one slips into “Datura” as Sam Kassel’s secretively whispered vocals gain a foothold amid an up-tempo guitar-percussion combo that runs forward in fits and then lays back before a guitar burst leads you through the finish line.

“Wonder Where She Goes” has that catchy, restrained guitar plucking that lays down the foundation of its composition. As Kassel contemplates, “Am I too late for the ghost train? Am I too dumb for another plane?” The song appears on the cusp of breaking loose, but then steps back for a moment, until finally the pressure boils over. “And I can’t find, I can’t find the way/the way she walks when she walks away…”

“Evergreen” is a multifaceted tune that initially rides its acoustic guitar riff as Kassel prophesizes, “If I were a knight, I would be the Green Knight, I would be the Green Knight, and you’d be my Green Lady,” before it lands in a full stable of smoldering instrumentation. Then, the song transitions into a higher gear, led by the quickened pace of the guitar running anxiously ahead, while being propelled forward by the bass before falling back to that almost blues-rock zone with the thudding bass invigorating the track into an open-field mad dash. “Pterodactyls” sits in the shadows, marinating in an ominous tone of preparation for battle. It’s a clear yet heart-racing endeavor as bright injections of acoustic guitar serve as glimpses of daybreak.

“Medicine Song” creates a stir with its immediate fresh out of the blocks surge, dashing ahead for an abbreviated sprint, tempering off and then throwing caution to the wind when the final stretch is in sight. “Souls” puts the understated spoken vocals to prime use, developing a ghostly creeping self-aware vibe as the instruments tightly pulse around the unrelenting bass. The song takes turns jolting forward while refueling with reflective cool-down breaks as the song deals with the distance game of a relationship. “Yeah, sometimes she goes far away/Sometimes I get in her face/Yeah, even though we’re jaded/I still wanna play the game.”

The final chapter of the record, the adventurously forest-wandering instrumental “Drink Deep of the Skull Cauldron,” quixotically bookends the album. It’s an intoxicating concoction as Sandcastle marches forward as a four-piece beyond the menacing tree line. – Michael Colavita

Mumblr Staying Active at Everybody Hits April 1

Posted on:

Alt rockers Mumblr were one of the most active local acts last year, willing to perform anywhere and everywhere around Philly. That spirit has continued into 2015 with the band gearing up to hit the road next week for an East Coast tour with Soda Bomb. However, they do have a rad show this evening at Everybody Hits where you’ll find the group hosting The Deli NYC’s 2013 Artist of the Year, Big Ups. They’ll also be joined by fiery NYC transplants Mannequin Pussy and all-female punk-pop trio Blowdryer. No, this is not an April Fool’s prank, and hump day just got a whole lot better! (BTW: Check out Mumblr’s recent visit to Sleepless Sound Studio for their Red Room Series HERE.) Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $7 Donation, All Ages – Alexis V.

Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler Opening for Steve Gunn at Boot & Saddle March 31

Posted on:

I love how when you close the big doors of Boot & Saddle, it can turn into a sweet listening room. There are very few places in Philly (if any) that can do that. Tonight will be a good oppurtunity for you to take in the cosmic sounds of Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler. The duo’s harp and synth interplay truly deserves your undivided attention. They’ll be supporting good pal and NYC guitar maestro Steve Gunn. This will be a good warm-up for the gang because they’ll be taking their acts on the road together to Europe during the months of May and June. Also along for the journey this evening will be multi-instrumentalist Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers). Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
