Residuels Opening for The Sonics at the TLA April 12

Posted on:

As we anxiously anticipate the release of their debut LP (which is currently in the works), Residuels open for The Sonics at the TLA this evening. The expanding duo unleashes a tenacious brand of rock ‘n’ roll. Justin Pittney’s attitude-asserting vocals fan the fire of classic grease-under-the-nails garage rock with steady popping off percussion and formidable guitar flare ups that set the music ablaze. With the band’s fresh “Valley of Fire”/“I Got A Right”(Stooges Cover) cassingle due out on April 20 (available at the venue this evening) garnering Iggy Pop’s stamp of approval, the band appears on its way. Tonight, they lay the groundwork for garage-rock legends The Sonics, whom recently released a new LP This Is The Sonics. Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St., 8pm, $25, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Mercury Girls Opening for Suburban Living at Bourbon & Branch April 11

Posted on:

Mercury Girls offer an interesting, organic spin, pulling from a Brit-pop foundation to create clean, jangly pop-rock that invites you along for the journey. The quartet unites former Catnaps members Adrianne Gold (Tender Vision) and Carolyn Haynes (Ghost Gum) with Literature members Kevin Attics & Chris Schackerman, and begins their new musical adventure this evening opening a tri-fold bill at Bourbon & Branch. The invigorating baroque pop of Tutlie bridges the gap. The intoxicating vocal interplay of Jessie Radlow and Rebecca Way takes one into the upper atmosphere as the delicately layered instrumentation establishes a cozy, ethereal environment. Wesley Bunch–led Suburban Living headline as part of their month-long residency at the NoLibs venue. Bunch’s controlled (yet emotively stirring) vocals take a ride on the perpetually moving 1-2 punch of synth and percussion, cruising along the shadowy, dream-pop terrain. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, April 10 – 12

Posted on:
When it comes to DIY events in Philly, few (if any) can compare to Pilam’s Human BBQ. Whether it’s catching killer bands like Screaming Females before the rest of the world has caught on to them, having The Dead Milkmen pop up to perform an unannounced set, or dashing down its back steps from the roof to escape a raid by the authorities, it’s always an experience to remember. This Saturday starting at noon, the grill will be all fired up, and the amps will be cranked for 21 acts that will include local talent like Slow Animal, DRGN King, Ghost Gum, Mischief Brew, Kississippi, and much, much more. You can check out the complete schedule HERE, and take note of the time allotted for a “surprise set.” Pilam, 3914 Spruce St., 12pm – 12am, $15, All Ages – Alexis V.

Psychic Teens Opening for Nervosas at Great Indoors April 10

Posted on:

A healthy supply of menace buzzes through you while listening to Psychic Teens, demonstrating a ravenous street-lurking mode that escalates the suspense around every poorly lit street corner while conjuring up images of gloomy dungeons in classic horror flicks. Those ominous tones of heart rattling bass/drum and eerie slivers of guitar illustrate a haunting setting in which Larry Ragone’s commanding baritone serves as a guide. The dance inducing synth-driven propulsions of Decade and the sprinting punk rock of Dark Thoughts help to set the stage at the Great Indoors for the fully-loaded post-punk of Columbus, Ohio’s Nervosas, whose unrelenting clean bursts of intertwined instrumentations tie you in. Great Indoors, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Twiin is made up of (non-twin) sister-brother combo, Lauren and Jon Tsipori, Andy Silverman, and Dan Lipshutz. The garage-punk four-piece currently only has one bawdy single available for streaming and download, but hopefully the prizes that they won from our Featured Artist(s) Poll will change all that. Until then, learn a bit more about Twiin from our interview HERE. (Photo by Holli Stephens)

Blood Sound Opening for The Soft Moon at Boot & Saddle April 9

Posted on:

Blood Sound transports me back to the 80s, and I’m a character in a John Hughes teen, coming-of-age movie – a little shy, a little awkward but definitely with my heart in the right place. Unfortunately, things don’t always seem to work out for me, and the only one who seems to understand is the person on my stereo singing my favorite song at the time. Let’s be honest. That was what most of us did at one time or another and probably more often than we care for people to know. It’s that rare connection that made Blood Sound’s debut LP Nightclub our March Record of the Month. You can capture those feelings once again this evening when they open for Captured Tracks’ The Soft Moon and Brooklyn/Austin-based Noveller at Boot & Saddle. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. New Track: “Hold On, Here It Go” – STS x rjd2

Posted on:

When two of your favorite artists collaborate, the potential level of excellence is sky high. Such is the case as producer extraordinaire RJD2 and emcee STS united for a creative endeavor. The album succinctly titled STS x RJD2 is scheduled for release on May 5 via R J Electrical Connections, and it’s first single “Hold On, Here It Go,” which premiered over at Rolling Stone, is an exuberant multi-genre blend. Utilizing the Bohemian Dub Orchestra, the song breathes an optimistic spring air as STS delivers his customary sharp-witted, slick-tongued lines amid calming keys and the bright blasts of horns lifting it up in a soulful manner. Mark your calendars, and play this jam again because once won’t be enough.
