We first caught wind of local lo-fi singer-songwriter Shannnen Moser from the compilation Girls to the Stage. The single brought to light her talent for stirring up emotions and melodies, while stringing together such thought-provoking, poetic, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. We were very interested to hear more from her, which we all now can. Take a break from life, and listen to her latest LP you shouldnt be doing that. You can thank us later.

Never Give Up Your Rebellious Youth w/Pissed Jeans at JB’s May 8
It’s a good weekend for punk in Philly, and Pissed Jeans, Philly hardcore veterans, are starting it off tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The Allentown/Philly four-piece has been creating heavy, violent, rock and roll for about a decade, and has recorded four turbulent albums along the way, the last three of which have been released by legendary Sub Pop Records. On their most recent album, Honeys, produced by Alex Newport, the boys sounded a bit more refined, which is not to say that they don’t still can’t creat a serious mosh pit, but they’ve rounded out the edge of that head-banging metal. Frontman Matt Korvette still screams the kind of lyrics that you can’t help but relate to, like the pains of being something of a man-child in this day and age on “Teenage Adult.” Come on out this evening, and never give up your rebellious youth! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – Emily DiCicco
Lovers League Album Release Show at Boot & Saddle May 8
Lovers League celebrates the release of 2 (produced by Bill Moriarty) this evening at Boot & Saddle. Reverend TJ McGlinchey and Dani Mari seamlessly lace together vocals providing a heartfelt dual-focused perspective. The album has a gentle folk-country-blues sway, with a simple approach that hits home because the hopeful sentiments expressed through those natural harmonies have a timeless appeal. The slowly escalating, steady-churning Americana-blues of the Levee Drivers occupy the middle slot as August John Lutz II vocals yearn with a gut-tearing tension, coupled with the ever-warming fire of instrumentation that could set off at any moment. The spacey, searching, eclectic musical explorations of Vilebred get things started. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., $10, 8:30pm, 21+ (Photo by Lisa Schaffer) – Michael Colavita

Check out the first taste of their record below with "Don’t Kill The Vibe"!
Hezekiah Opening for Oddisee at JB’s May 7
Hezekiah’s music chronicles his stories outlining the peaks and valleys of the past through the present with a hopeful outlook on the future, detailing a spoken narrative with a variety of instrumental motifs, taking a soulful church tone, stretching the string of words over a jazz-inspired backdrop or stridently prospering as a beat sets the table for him to dish out his vision of what lies ahead. Tonight, the journey continues at Johnny Brenda’s because as the title to his latest album suggests, Dreams Don’t Chase Themselves. Multi-talented emcee/producer Fatnice joins in delivering tightly spun rhymes that demonstrate a time-tested, honed skill, whil still possessing that free-flowing aesthetic. Marland-raised, now Brooklyn resident Oddisee headlines, celebrating his new LP The Good Fight, which was released earlier this week. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – Michael Colavita
New Blue Smiley LP Available for Streaming & Download
There’s an ominous, laidback intesity to Blue Smiley‘s new release ok. With hushed vocals, grungy, fuzzed-out guitarwork, and a heart-palpitating rhythm section, the trio are definitely moving in the right direction with their latest studio effort. You can surely hear the improvements in production on ok, which was recorded and mixed by The Weaks‘s Evan Bernard and Chris Baglivo with mastering by Ryan Schwabe. The physical copy of the LP will be available via Third Floor Tapes.
