Northern Liberties Record Release Show at JB’s May 29
There are few bands that can produce the mystic, menacing power that three-piece Northern Liberties has created throughout its discography. Self-titled as “ghost-punk” (sort of a harrowing noise-punk), the group is best experienced live. To watch brothers Justin and Marc Duerr and longtime best friend Kevin Reilly perform is to know them. However, for the past five odd years or so, Northern Liberties, born out of West Philly house shows, has been taken a break from releasing any material. Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, the band is ending its hiatus, and celebrating the release of the trio’s new album, Errant Ray. Psych/cyber-rock outfit S.T.A.R.W.O.O.D. will also be an entertaining force. Expect killer vocals, intergalactic warrior outfits, and lots of lasers. Hardcore four-piece Westboro Baptist Choir will be kicking off the celebration. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Emily DiCicco
New Track: “Shaking” – Creepoid
Below is a new track from Creepoid called "Shaking" that premiered yesterday over at The Fader. As guitarist/vocalist Sean Miller declared, "For me, this song represents a longing for the past… I will always love the place where I grew up, even if it’s only for what it once was or what I perceived it to be at the time. That fond sadness is at the heart of this track." The languid guitars and Miller’s aching drawl brings all those emotions to light. Look out for the band’s forthcoming LP Cemetery Highrise Slum, due out June 23 via Collect Records! And their release show on Friday, June 26 with Ecstatic Vision at Johnny Brenda’s is not to be missed.
New Track: “D – Minor” – mewithoutYou
Here’s mewithoutYou‘s second offering from their forthcoming album Pale Horses, entitled "D – Minor." On their latest, which premiered over at NPR, you find a more subdued outfit, in comparison to the group’s previous lead single "Red Cow"; however, the band’s usual intesity and insightful storytelling still remains prevalent throughout the track. Pale Horses will be officially available on June 16 via Run For Cover Records.
Slow Animal Proves to Be Not So Harmless at A House Named Virtue May 28
Simply because an animal appears harmless doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t keep an eye out as it roams in the periphery. The duo of Slow Animal proves it by executing power-pop that shakes the status quo with emotive crashing waves of guitar and percussion smacking down in a reality-oriented awakening technique, establishing a setting for those personal contemplative lyrics to roam. After a recent run of dates with Hop Along, the trio of Thin Lips has returned home, and its latest EP Divorce Year finds Chrissy Tashijan delivering strong-willed, heartfelt vocals, reinforced by consistently catchy pop-punk instrumentation that steadily rolls clean, while hinting at a raw base. Former Deli Philly Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners Twiin continue to impress with their garage-punk aesthetic and their latest single “Anxiety.” The lineup at A House Named Virtue also includes emotive Baltimore rockers Phantom Lanterns, whom instrumentally embrace a well-oiled math-rock precision and the psych-pop combo of Toronto’s Blonde Elvis. A House Named Virtue, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5-$7, All Ages – Michael Colavita
New Track: “Astral Plane” – Ecstatic Vision
Ecstatic Vision have taken their previously demoed track "Astral Plane," and properly gave the jam the attention that it called for in the studio. Check out the group’s twelve-plus-minute second single, which premiered yesterday at Stereogum, off the band’s debut EP Sonic Praise! The album is scheduled to drop on June 30 via Relapse Records, and Ecstatic Vision will be hosting a co-release celebration with Creepoid on Friday, June 26 at Johnny Brenda’s.
New Track: “To You I Give” – Madalean Gauze
Madalean Gauze just shared a new single called “To You I Give.” The song’s leveled yet authoritative vocals are met by an intense storm of instrumentation. It will appear on her upcoming debut LP that was recorded by Jeff Zeigler. She is slated to perform on Saturday, June 6 in support of Ross Bellenoit’s record release show at Johnny Brenda’s, which also includes Morgan Pinkstone (of Swedeland). (Photo by Shay Allen)
Power Animal Opening for Porches & Frankie Cosmos at PhilaMOCA May 27
It’s no secret that we’re fans of the intoxicatingly mesmerizing sounds of Power Animal, a.k.a. Keith Hampson. After all, he is one of the rare artists that that we’ve asked to perform at our annual anniversary bash multiple times. Though his musical output in the last few years hasn’t kept up with our demands for more tunes, it’s always a treat to hear what Hampson has been up to lately, locked away in his makeshift sound lab. And this evening, Power Animal will be opening for The Deli NYC most recent Artist of the Year, Porches (you can find them on the cover of our latest print issue, which is also available online HERE), and blogosphere darlings Frankie Cosmos at PhilaMOCA. It’s been sold out for a while now so kudos to our readers who know what’s up and have grabbed their tix already. We’re looking forward to sharing a rad evening of music with you! New Track: “Jungle Gym” – Harmony Tividad
Girlpool captures the wonderment of adolescence on their debut full-length album Before The World Was Big, due out June 2 via Wichita Recordings. Harmony Tividad continues that exploration with her solo effort "Jungle Gym." It’s the B-side of her new EP, aptly titled two songs. The duo will be on tour this summer in support of its forthcoming record. The group will be stopping back into Philly on Friday, August 14 at Everybody Hits.
Free Download: “I Feel Extra-Natural” (LVL UP Cover) – Slaughter Beach, Dog
Slaughter Beach, Dog, a.k.a. Modern Baseball‘s Jake Ewald, has released a cover of LVL UP’s “I Feel Extra-Natural,” found on Hoodwink’d. The acoustic strumming pattern, subtle keys and softly interlaced vocals play into the song’s delicate, emotive nature. Tonight, Slaughter Beach, Dog will be performing at Hazel House on a bill presented by The Guild, which also includes Abi Reimold, Meridian, and Pinch Hitter. (Photo by Jessica Flynn)
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah 10th Anniversary Tour w/Teen Men at JB’s May 26 & 27
It’s hard to believe that it has been a decade since Clap Your Hands Say Yeah dropped their debut self-titled album on the world. The groundbreaking LP sold tens of thousands of copies out of bassist Tyler Sargent’s Brooklyn apartment at that time, which was unheard of in the music industry, and helped to alter the scope of what indie/DIY acts could accomplish without a record label. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this generation-defining moment, the group is re-issuing its first release, and will be hitting the road performing the record in its entirety along with other favorites from the band’s catalog. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah will be kicking the tour off this evening at Johnny Brenda’s with Teen Men, who have been asked to support them during their travels across the U.S. and Canada. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $20, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

New Daughn Gibson LP Available for Streaming
Daughn Gibson, a.k.a. Josh Martin, just premiered his third album Carnation over at NPR’s First Listen. Gibson once again gives us a record that we were not expecting from the rugged-looking baritone, as his past country leanings lay further underneath his latest lacquered sheen of pop. The LP officially drops on June 2 via Sub Pop.
