Communion w/Pine Barons, Foxtrot & The Get Down, and More at MilkBoy Philly June 3

Posted on:

The latest monthly installment of Communion Residency Philadelphia takes place this evening at Milkboy Philly. Pine Barons and Foxtrot & The Get Down represent the hometown music on this night. As they work on their debut LP, Pine Barons’s latest single, “Clown,” captures your ear with its casual jangly riff-percussion combination that shifts into a higher gear, while using smooth backing harmonies to display a polished pop-rock sensibility. Former Deli Philly Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners, Foxtrot & The Get Down, hold true to a blues rock tradition as thick, memorable guitar work is balanced by a steady backend and earnest vocals pulled from the inside-out. The gothic soul of Detroit’s Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas shells out an eclectic energy and infused musicality that are unified by sultry vocals that pack a mean punch. The intricate yet easily consumed indie rock of Dan Mangan + Blacksmith serves as the headliner. Marshall Allen/Chris Powell Opening for Holly Herndon June 2

Posted on:

Cosmic adventurer Marshall Allen recently celebrated his 91st birthday. The alto saxophonist and leader of Sun Ra Arkestra continues to prove that his creative nature has no bounds tonight when he teams up Man Man drummer and experimental beat-maker Christopher Sean Powell (a.k.a. Pow Pow/Spaceship Aloha). If you are looking for a rare evening of outside-the-box music, which is brought to you by Ars Nova Workshop (so you know that it will be definitely interesting), then you need to get your ass over to Johnny Brenda’s this evening. The two local heroes will be supporting blogosphere darling Holly Herndon, who just released her brilliant new album Platform. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

New Music Video: “Sigel (Snowgoons Remix)” – Reef The Lost Cauze & King Syze

Posted on:

Reef The Lost Cauze & King Syze came out with one of our favorite local hip-hop albums last year, Year Of The Hyenas. Unfortunately, it came as a surprise around the holiday season so we feel that it didn’t get the attention that it deserved. Well, we are happy to see that the record will be getting reissued July 3 via Goon MuSick Records, Inc. Check out their new music video below for "Sigel (Snowgoons Remix)," which was directed by MDot Cinema!

All Systems Are a Go w/Janelle at Bourbon & Branch June 1

Posted on:

Consistently throbbing basslines, vamping spacey synth, vocals filtered through the fog, and a grounding stampede of percussion, the trio of Janelle, opening tonight at Bourbon & Branch, mesh punk assertiveness with a cosmic shoegazing exploration. The byproduct is a ruminating calm with a heavier foundational bite. All systems are a go, and the music is rapidly gathering steam; however, even as the pressure rises, the band doesn’t break a sweat. A pair of FDH labelmates will be joining Janelle. The battleship of intensity that SGNLS unleashes is fueled via synth, searing shards of guitars and constant churning backend. Currently residing in Nebraska, the expanded synth-punk quintet of Digital Leather (whose new LP All Faded is due out on June 23 via FDH) headline the evening, delivering rapid-paced danceable jams. The "Kosmiche punk" of Throbbing Chakra that includes members of Lantern completes at show certain to shake off those week-starting woes. The Deli Philly’s June Record of the Month: Eye of Night – Bad Braids

Posted on:
Eye of Night, the latest album from Bad Braids, the moniker of Megan Biscieglia, offers a record full of hauntingly elegant tales. Co-produced with Jordan Burgis and released on cassette and digitally via Glowing Dagger, the album continues down the enlightening path carved out by its predecessors, Arrow And Orb and Supreme Parallel.

“Intro (Fade)” sets the table, delivering a mind-cleansing mantra of sorts – “Proceed and the rest will fade.” The plucking of an acoustic guitar frames a forest-roaming sensation as Paul Christian’s cello and Jordan Burgis’s organ amplify the eerie surroundings. One continues negotiating through the treacherous terrain in “Jackal,” with its ominous howl and stirring blend of shimmering percussion, beautifully sparse guitar, and flute and bells, demonstrating a supernatural echo.

Lurking in the shadows is “Mara,” as Biscieglia’s vocals take on a sacred air, a call to action delivered as a beautiful comforting chant addressed at the listener – “All come forward to the start of sea/Lay down, lay down with me,” the uncertainty of the musical surroundings are fleshed out as the guitar lead is supplemented by the creepy installments of organ & EWI and lingering vocals.

“Wild Flowers” develops from a peaceful origin, gathering the momentum from percussion as the guitar riff escalates in intensity before easing off and then making a controlled push. “Fever Dream Powers” utilizes the ethereal combination of EWI, theremin and saw, taking the folk aesthetic and enhancing it through the swirling textures the instruments create. The album closer, “Glory, Glory,” retains an unsettling element triggering a cautious burst of adrenaline.

Eye of Night finds Bad Braids pulling listeners into the unknown, led by Biscieglia’s alluring vocals that hint at warmth and comfort. While the surroundings suggest the presence of ghostly dangers, one can’t help but climb deeper into the thicket. – Michael Colavita

New Music Video: “Hey Nineteen” – Work Drugs

Posted on:

Oh man – if we ever had beaches close to us like the ones in the new music video for Work Drugs‘s "Hey Nineteen," we might actually leave Philly for the weekend. Though the band is not shy about its love for Steely Dan, this is definitely not a cover. It’s the latest single from the group’s upcoming album Louisa, whose release has been pushed back to later this summer.

Mischief Brew Record Release Doubleheader at Boot & Saddle May 30

Posted on:

Mischief Brew may be the only punk band out there that incorporates a fiddle, a vibraharp, a timbale and the occasional piece of scrap metal or wood. Not to say they should be classified as simply punk. When Erik Peterson confined himself to a Philadelphia basement with nothing but a couple of instruments and a four-track, he began a project that has incorporated punk, folk, swing and true protest music. Since those basement days in 2000, Mischief Brew have released a multitude of recordings, and will be celebrating their newest this Friday with an afternoon (all ages)/evening doubleheader of shows at South Philly’s Boot & Saddle. The full-length, "This Is Not For Children,” released by Alternative Tentacles Records, keeps up with the band’s themes of social protest, talking on labor rights and gentrification, as well as the simple joys like underage drinking. Mishief Brew has been known to ask audience members to help out on instruments or back-up vocals, so be ready to jump in. Boot and Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 3pm/8pm, $12-$20, All Ages/21+ – Emily DiCiccio

Weekend Warrior, May 29 – 31

Posted on:
The emotive punk-rock immediacy of Glocca Morra takes the stage for a final time headlining this Saturday evening at the First Unitarian Church. Though the band announced that it would be no more in late November, the group has been on a run of recent farewell dates. Individually, their creative output is now spread out in various outlets including The Spirit of the Beehive, Dogs on Acid, and Ghost Gum. While tonight’s show, which is being presented by R5 Productions  & The Guild, is sold out, those lucky enough to be inside are certain to witness a rowdy bon voyage, saturated in blood, sweat and tears. Fellow emo four-piece Clique and the harmony-wielding, all-female, garage-twee group Marge will help to fill-out the lineup, which also includes New York’s LVL UP, whom thoughtfully explore a myriad of the emotions in a rockin’ fashion, and the grungy, noise-rock of Toronto’s Greys. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30pm, $12 (Sold Out), All Ages – Michael Colavita
