Summer Fiction Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle June 20

Posted on:

Bill Ricchini, a.k.a. Summer Fiction, celebrates his sophomore release, Himalaya, tonight at Boot & Saddle. The album finds a sweet spot, developing rich, instrumentally textured pop songs that blossom through melodic vocals and crisp harmonies. That classic radio-pop sound is recognizable and particularly apparent in the polished feel of the songwriting. However, despite its often bubbly, twinkling appearance, these tunes also exhibit the road-tested weariness of a veteran  musician, touching on the duality of current disappointment and future hope. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Clark Park Summer Solstice Festival

Posted on:

The Clark Park Summer Solstice Festival returns again this afternoon. For over 40 years, the West Philly community has been putting on special events at the beloved neighborhood meeting place. Today, you’ll find an eclectic mix of music, dance and theater performances, arts and craft vendors, and children’s activities. Headlining the fest will be Cheap Dinosaurs, Philly’s premier chiptune outfit, led by Dino Lionetti. You’ll also find garage-pop crew Frontyards, folk-pop singer-songwriter Liz de Lise, powerpopsters Sidewalk Atlas, and many others. Hopefully the festival gods will keep the rain away, but it’s not looking promising so don’t forget to bring your gear. Clark Park Bowl, 43rd St. & Chester Ave, 12pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Weekend Warrior, June 19 – 21

Posted on:
After thirteen years and four critically-acclaimed records, accompanied by a slew of singles and covers meant to get the mind and body moving, the dynamic duo of Chris Ward on drums and Andrew Thiboldeaux on Rhodes, synth, bass and vocals, a.k.a. Pattern is Movement, will be closing out their musical partnership this Saturday night at Johnny Brenda’s. However, this farewell party will certainly be filled with joy, friendship, great memories, and sets of rad music. The first backing band for Annie Clark (St. Vincent) will be joined by good pals “weirdo-folk” outfit Norwegian Arms and “jungle-pop” duo Dream Safari. Come help celebrate the music career of one of Philly’s finest indie acts! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Debut Sunfeeder Album Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Sunfeeder is a new project from Brendan Burke, who had previously released material under the moniker Delta Drift. With Sunfeeder, Burke continues his journey into ambient electronic post-rock; however, there is a more polished, spacious, patient feel to his latest effort, which often comes with the wisdom of maturity. It’s a good listen, especially on a lazy summer day, alone on your favorite psychedelics. You can stream and download the self-titled album in its entirety below.

Fight Amp/KEN mode Record Release Tour at KFN June 19

Posted on:

The power trio of Fight Amp celebrates the release of their new record Constantly Off as its dual record release tour with Winnipeg’s KEN mode (who dropped their album, Success, earlier this week) rolls into Kung Fu Necktie. Constantly Off maintains an undeniable heaviness; however, the music moves with a distinct purpose. The band displays a ferocity but with an ear toward control. With that aim in mind, the combustible force, chainsaw-menacing guitars, thick, thudding, eerie bass and percussion pounces in a zooming in of immediacy. All that said, while fusing sludgy riff and rhythm combinations with vocals that can snarl without losing sight of melody. Fight Amp can knock you out, but has trained to go the distance. Ominously pursuing post-punk trio Psychic Teens opens the show, leaving the door cracked and daring you to look inside. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Tadoma EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Drawing inspiration from a meditation tape, Tadoma, a.k.a. Data Garden co-founder Joe Patitucci, performed “on the fly” (without pre-programmed sequences or beats) at Johnny Brenda’s in August 2012. The result is the electronic sonic experiment, Journeys Through Time, which you can stream and download below. The four-track EP combines those meditative thoughts/commands with music that seems to hypnotically pull from far-out corners of the universe. Get lost in it!

Night Market w/Needle Points, Thin Lips, The Bul Bey & More in the Eraserhood June 18

Posted on:

The Foodtrust‘s Night Market comes to the Eraserhood this evening, and our friends at PhilaMOCA will be helping to provide the entertainment while you stuff your faces and wait in ridiculous lines. The Moz’s Director, Eric Bresler, has put together a diverse lineup that consists of the psych-garage boogie of Needles Points, the riff-heavy pop-punk of Thin Lips, hustlin’ Philly emcee The Bul Bey, Puerto Rican Bomba/Plena outfit Los Bomberos De la Calle, and synth-driven alt rockers Wild By Law. You’ll also find Mitch Esparza (The Love Club) roaming the streets as a one-man mariachi band, 12-year-old Mayor of the Eraserhood, Lil Sean, providing a few laughs, and other short performances by the PhilaMOCA family of freaks. Protip: Come to the Night Market before it officially starts to scope it out and get your food. Even Better Protip: If you can only get there in the middle of the event, head on over to Jose’s (469 N. 10th St.), and grab yourself a delicious burrito because those long lines aren’t worth it. Eraserhood, 12th & 13th Sts. between Spring Garden & Callowhill Sts., 6pm-10pm, Free, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

The group came together in 2008 after feeling unsatisfied with the “current” landscape of music. They recently released their 3rd full-length album, entitled Great Balancing Act, and also emerged victorious as our Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner. New The Writhing Squares 7″ Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

The Writhing Squares, a.k.a. Kevin Nickles and Daniel Provenzano, have released a fresh 7" "Gemini Blues"/"Streetlight Nightmare." "Gemini Blues" uses a synth generating a spacey atmosphere before assertively marching forward, led by an ominous bass and the shuffling swooshes of tambourine. "Streetlight Nightmare" intertwines that onslaught of bass and percussion, incorporating that stargazing synth and injecting a focused fortification of saxophone, demonstrating the duo’s multi-genre sound. You can stream and purchase both tracks below.
