Philly underground music blog Blow The Scene will be presenting a benefit art and music showcase this evening at South Philly’s The Pharmacy. The music portion of the night will feature local grindcore trio Die Choking, thrashers Drones for Queens, and vegan straight edge hardcore outfit Dying alongside bruising touring acts Grin And Bear It, Mother Brain, and Gut Feeling (featuring members of Catharsis and Undying). Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase artwork from various contributors during the show (check out the list of participants HERE), as well as a few days after the event. All proceeds from art sales and admission will be donated to the good, kind folks at PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society). New Juston Stens & Friends Soundtrack Available for Streaming & Download
After leaving Philly indie-rock faves Dr. Dog to pursue his own voice in music, Juston Stens took off in the fall of 2011 on his 1972 Triumph motorcycle to travel around the U.S. and collaborate with his numerous musician pals that he had connected with over the years while touring and performing. He was also followed by videographer Drew Stubbs, who recorded his adventures and created the documentary I Lay Where I Fall. Stens also just released Share The Road, the soundtrack that accompanies the film, featuring appearances by members of Wilco, Spoon, Generationals, Floating Action, Brass Bed, Apollo Sunshine, and solo artists such as David Vandervelde and Jessica Lea Mayfield, which you can stream and download for free below.
The Homophones Emerge From Their Slumber at The Fire July 9
The Homophones emerge from their slumber to make a somewhat rare appearance at The Fire this evening. The Jason Ferraro-led group burrows under your skin with a haunting ease. Musically, there’s a polished folk backdrop erecting a familiar space for one’s mind and body to sink into. With hints of those quirky, slightly warped lyrics, they offer an alternate prism of experience that catches your attention with its ability to establish comfort from a set of twisted images and a captainly baritone. The Homophones will be hosting a trio of New York acts, including the somber yet percussively forward electronic songs of Goste and the crisp soulful R&B of On the Sun, which incorporates that bass-bumping, horn-blasting funk, while folk-rock trio A Penny’s Worth kick things off. New Track: “Promise” – Abi Reimold
With “Promise,” a new song that is featured on Pile of Keith (a compilation of up-and-coming DIY Baltimore and Philadelphia artists released via Pack Rat Records), Abi Reimold has ventured into unexpected territory albeit momentarily. Co-written with and produced by Rob Devious, the track couples Reimold’s alluring vocals with a trap beat that locks you in as warm kinetics balance that emotional grip. Reimold is set to perform this Saturday, July 11 at Boot & Saddle, opening for SOAK.
New Video: “Lurkers” (Demo) – OK Otter
OK Otter, a.k.a. Mike Doyle, released a new video for his bass-driven demo “Lurkers.” The footage runs through the arsenal of instruments used in the recording process. The murky mixture of thudding bass and percussion develop a sinister turned spacey setting, smoothed over by Doyle’s navigating vocals, which offer a glimpse of light through the unlit tunnel. The song is based off Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.
