Spraynard Record Release Show at PhilaMOCA July 19

Posted on:

Freshly released via Jade Tree, Mable, the new album from pop-punk outfit Spraynard is being celebrated with a Sunday performance presented by R5 Productions at PhilaMOCA. The band’s latest record rouses with a percussion-forward tone, establishing a controlled yet aggressive path. That running start adrenaline rush feeds into lyrics that ooze emotion as though pulled straight from the chest (in that universal latches into your lexicon kind of way). There’s a pulling in the same direction consciously clear and melodic aesthetic; the energy level is consistently high, while the collective appears efficient and purposeful. Mable grabs a hold and before long you’ll be raising the volume and singing along. With there self-titled debut LP due out August 28 via Jade Tree, the uninhibited sound of Dogs on Acid will get things moving with help from local pals, Year Of Glad, and Casual. PhilaMOCA 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Goodnight Lights/Spelling Reform EP Release Show at JB’s July 18

Posted on:

A pair of local outfits celebrates their new EPs with performances this evening at Johnny Brenda’s. Goodnight Lights welcomes their latest release Say What You Want. The EP is pushed by the constant backend that steadily surges, paving the way to thick guitar lines that serve as punctuation marks as melodically layered, ironed-out vocals provide clear expanses. It’s decidedly clean, with accelerated rushes sprinkled in as pedal-to-the-floor showcases of strength. With their own freshly released EP Diving Bell, the power pop of Spelling Reform (which includes Dan Wisniewski and Mark Rybaltowski previously of The Quelle Source) build a feel-good vibe as Wisniewski’s contemplative narrative vocal style ties into strolling-through-the-neighborhood instrumentation, reflecting on a series of emotions in a purposely loose yet personal way. Openers Shark Tape will catch you on their robust blend of hook-filled rock. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, July 17 – 19

Satellite Hearts convene at Ortlieb’s this evening to celebrate the release of their sophomore LP Desire Forces The Flow. While their debut album occupied a loud, raw and rugged garage space, the peeks into their latest work suggest a more polished pop sensibility. Those tasty stick-to-your-bones guitar riffs remain, but the spectrum of sound for the trio seems to have broadened. The best way to find out after all is to hear it live in the flesh. The thunderous up-tempo smash and grab blues rock of fellow locals Thee, Idea Men open the proceedings, while the multifaceted Virginia-based rock trio of The Dawn Drapes, which combines airy, stabilizing vocals with a heavier instrumental environment, will be sandwiched between the two. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Music Video: “Something in the Way” (Nirvana Cover) – Nothing

Posted on:

Nothing’s video for their haunting cover of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” (which was featured on the Nirvana tribute album Whatever Nevermind, released via Robotic Empire) really digs in. The eerie combination of piano lead and composed yet macabre vocals establishes a distinct and chilling mood. Directed by Kevin Haus, the footage depicts a woman unable to escape the symbolic dirt and grime.

New Track: “Love is Blind” – Purples

Posted on:

With the recent addition of Mike Quinn (ex-And The Moneynotes), the indie-rock trio of Purples has evolved into a quartet. Their new single “Love is Blind” takes a creepy first step, orchestrated via keys and a thumping bass line, which then transitions into a strolling psych rocker. Vocal harmonies, grounding percussion, tight guitar licks and those persistent keys and bass produce a song that’s airy with an edge. Catch the band when they return home on Wednesday, July 22 at Ortlieb’s with Lightninging and Gladshot!

New Videos: Sperry Session – Marian Hill

Posted on:

The duo of Marian Hill, a.k.a. Jeremy Lloyd & Sam Gongol, have a new live Sperry Session over at Rolling Stone, which includes three songs from their album Sway – “One Time,” “Got It,” and “Whisky.” Lloyd’s tantalizing electronic beats create a cool jazz-infused, R&B foundation with that snappy percussion and casually magnetic bass melding with Gongol’s seductive, sultry vocals, morphing into a modern yet classic sound that in a live format injects Steve Davit’s sweet flurries of saxophone to provide an additional burst of energy and polish. Marian Hill is set to perform at the Made in America Festival in September, and also has a performance on October 1 scheduled at Union Transfer.
