New Track: “It’s a Drag” – Purples

Posted on:

The weekend’s conclusion can be a bummer. However, Purples’s latest release “It’s a Drag” with a blend of rumbling bass, snappy percussion and spirited vocals helps to break loose from the doldrums. By the time that gnarly guitar inferno of a solo is ablaze, the tides have turned. You can catch the band on a bill with Matthew Friedberger on Thursday, October 8 at Boot & Saddle.

Feel at Ease w/Legs Like Tree Trunks at Bourbon & Branch Aug. 23

Posted on:

A gentle gliding movement with a technically precise, powerful, musical engine, Pittsburgh transplants Legs Like Tree Trunks have that at-ease-go-with-the-flow sound. However, that casual disposition is countered by practiced and refined sonic expeditions. The loose strolling folk narratives cruise by escalating into high-end, crisp jams. Tonight at Bourbon & Branch, the band will be joined on the bill by the expansive musical excursions of quintet The Twenty Committee, allowing their sonic scrolls to roll out before your eyes. On the heels of releasing her debut EP Sirens, Australian pop songstress Nonie is currently on tour with the soulfully engaging vocals of Nashville’s Daem. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Gondola Opening for Dead Heavens at JB’s Aug. 22

Posted on:

A tasty brew is cooking at Johnny Brenda’s this evening. Gondola’s tri-cogged synthesis of heavy haze will be in good order. The band embraces their stampeding sound, pushing the heart-jolting, foot-stomping, divide-and-conquer vibe. Emerging from a cavernous shade, the hazy possessed vocals gradually seep in. They’re given an additional prowess by the obliterating style that the instruments prescribe to. Backend thump and face-melting guitar ooze that encompassing trance-like state of medieval peril. Tonight, they help bridge the divide to Walter Schreifels’s (Gorilla Biscuits) musical vehicle, Dead Heavens, which also includes former members of White Zombie, Youth of Today, and Cults. The resulting byproduct is familiarly catchy with instrumental ferocity to etch a personal road. Hardcore fixture Don Devore (Collapsing Scenery, Sick Feeling) gets the fire started. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, August 21 – 23

Posted on:
With primal guitar shredding and all out rushes of penetrating, smashing percussion, Mannequin Pussy constructs heavy walls of sound. The immediate impact is apparent, as those instrumental tools of aggression are consistently put to good work in impactful blasts. However, amid that conquering vortex, a delicate, melodic core persists, playing off that noisy tornado to establish an intriguing dichotomy. Tonight at The Pharmacy, Mannequin Pussy will be joined by the guitar-driven psych-punk trio Telelpathic. Sarah Everton and Rob Garcia team up with Paul Brinkley in creating a relentless yet accessible collection of tunes, pushing forward while tempered/mellowed by calming, shared vocal duties. With a grimy backbone and a polished pop finish, 420 darling Colleen Green headlines the sold-out event. Lowercase Roses Vinyl Release Show at Everybody Hits Aug. 21

Posted on:
Matt Scheuermann, formerly of The Sidekicks, started a solo project, recording under the moniker roses, which he recently altered to Lowercase Roses to avoid any confusion with the multiple projects already using the former name. Scheuermann shared a three-song EP towards the end of last year that found him journeying far from the sound of his previous band to an isolated place filled with warm, acoustic strums and his genteel, heartwarming vocals. This evening at Everybody Hits, his self-titled EP will be getting an official release on 7” vinyl via Lame-O/Stereophonodon Records. Joining in the celebration will be August Koch (of Cayetana), Thin Lips, and Cherry. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

New Track: “Mad Men Jam Boys” – Black Thought x STS x Truck North

Posted on:

The STSRJD2 collaboration has resulted in an album of excellent hip hop. Now, with “Mad Men Jam Boys,” STS has spun the classic RJD2 Mad Men theme song, “Beautiful Mind.” Produced by The Wurxs for their new project, Wurxs of Art, the song builds off that dramatic orchestration, enlisting the help of fellow Philly emcees Black Thought and Truck North. This heavy-hitting relay race of a track has anchors from start to finish.

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band Opening for Eleventh Dream Day at JB’s Aug. 20

Posted on:

Eleventh Dream Day have been around for over three decades now, and core members Rick Rizzo, Janet Bean (of Freakwater), Doug McCombs (of Tortoise and Brokeback) have teamed up with Jim Elkington (of Tweedy and Brokeback) for their latest release Works For Tomorrow (Thrill Jockey). Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, the Chicago alt-rockers will be matched with hometown guitar hero Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band. Combining their love for the expansive jams of The Grateful Dead with the art-punk noise of bands like Television, the band sets its sights on morphing these distinctly polar ends of the music spectrum into a cohesive soundscape, enveloping onlookers into a world where the lines of genres are blurred and minds are scrambled. Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band currently have plans to release The Rarity of Experience, a 2XLP due out in 2016 via No Quarter. They’ll also be joined this evening by Philly’s own Rosali. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

New Music Video: “Salt” – OhBree

Posted on:

Cigarette eating, red-painted (blood-smeared) faces, eggs cracked atop of heads, and smashed ukuleles, the new music video for “Salt” by OhBree matches the band’s eccentric yet contagious art-pop aesthetic. The group’s playful, oddball, circus sound delightfully twists and echoes in one’s head. On August 27 at PhilaMOCA, OhBree will celebrate the vinyl release of their 2014 LP Death by Broomstick. The show will also feature Dead TenorsAPES record release (as they go on an indefinite hiatus), as well as Upholstery and Ganou.

Everyone Everywhere Comes Together Once Again at Everybody Hits Aug. 19

Posted on:

A Wednesday dose of music can be an ideal mechanism to breakup the mid-week monotony. That scenario is elevated by the rare opportunity to catch Everyone Everywhere at Everybody Hits. (That’s quite the tongue twister.) The band is known for dishing out crisp, spiraling rock that tugs with an emotional integrity. The balance of loose instrumental precision with open-book lyricism develops outward momentum while staying close to a personal core. The delicate blend of melodic, emotive-churning songs by Three Man Cannon and like-minded four-piece Clique help to establish an atmosphere for head-clearing release. New Jersey’s Prawn round out a bill, which is already sold out. Everybody Hits 529 West Girard Ave., 8:30pm, $8 (Sold Out), All Ages – Michael Colavita
