Shannen Moser Burns Brightly at The Pharmacy Sept. 4

Posted on:

Tonight, Shannen Moser performs at The Pharmacy with a full band. Moser has honed a recipe of sonic ingredients that couples the tender elegance of stripped-down instrumentation with gentle, transfixing vocal melody. The overall approach may sound simple; however, the reality is intricate. It allows the pieces to fit together in a subtle illuminating manner that burns brightest up close, but also provides intrigue from a distance. With hypnotic vocals canvassed over enticing experimental beats, the duo of Willow Talk magnetically get things started. A pair of Brooklyn-based outfits is sandwiched in between, including Half Waif, whose ever-alluring vocals are complimented by a diverse musical spectrum, establishing a far reach. The free-flowing, avant-garde sounds of Ben Seretan Group round this bill into form. The Pharmacy, 1300/02 S. 18th St., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Somewhere Else” – Littler

Posted on:

On Littler‘s new single, "Somewhere Else," Madeline Meyer drags us through the muck and mire that blocks our path towards adulthood. While some gracefully make this transition, the reality that most of us face isn’t that easy, and Littler manages to capture that relatable angst with their latest, which was recorded and mixed by Swearin’s Kyle Gilbride. "Somewhere Else" will find its place on the band’s forthcoming album Of Wandering. They’ll be performing next in Philly on Sunday, September 13 at Hong Kong Garden with Bad Canoes, Moor Mother Goddess, and Pill.

New Track: “Sooner” – Petal

Posted on:

With a heart-rendering honesty and a full-throttled, guitar–powered ability to erupt, “Sooner” draws you in close with its anecdotal tale of change and moving forward. The track is off Shame, the forthcoming debut LP from Petal, a.k.a. Kiley Lotz, which will be released via Run For Cover Records. What begins as a steady guitar riff fires away toward the song’s conclusion, gradually creating a distance and then rocketing ahead. Shame will be officially available on October 23, and Petal rolls into town with fellow Scranton brethren Captain, We’re Sinking on Friday, September 11 at Michael Jordan House. RFA Cruises In at WCL Sept. 3

Posted on:

The four-piece caravan of Really Fast Automobiles, a.k.a. RFA, cruises into the upstairs of World Café Live this evening. The band toes the threshold of easily assimilating garage rock with vocals that maintain an even keel, but appear on the verge of breaking loose from control and blues-inflected instrumentation that comes loaded with smooth riding rhythms and tight riffs. They’re crisp and clean like a good drink, but have the capacity to throw in another shot to stir things up. Clean contoured guitar licks and steady-handed, harmony-centric vocals shape The Reflexes‘ pop-rock sound, while the breezy warm crooning of Mike Bailer Band gets things started. Rock Out for Knockout Benefit Show at WCL Sept. 2

Posted on:
After living in Philly all these years, it’s sad to say that you grow accustomed to all the violence that surrounds you. However, it doesn’t mean that you should be numb and turn a blind eye to it. On July 25, fourth grade school teacher and former Liberty roller-derby skater, Danecia “Nina Knockout” Berrian, and her one-year-old baby girl were brutally attacked in their home, suffering multiple stab wounds. Denecia is currently in stable condition, but her daughter is still in critical care. Things like this shouldn’t happen, especially to good people! If you’d like to help out, come out to World Café Live this evening for Rock Out for Knockout Benefit Show featuring Foxtrot & the Get Down, Billy Black, The Sideshow Prophets, and Chalk & The Beige Americans. In addition to ticket proceeds, donations will also be collected to help Danecia and her daughter through this tragic event in their lives that no one should experience. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 7pm, $15, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

The Deli Philly’s September Record of the Month: Hardcore Friends – Lithuania

Posted on:
Lithuania’s debut full-length album Hardcore Friends via Lame-O Records begins with the mad-dashing punk jolt of “God In Two Persons.” The song quickly gathers momentum as a rush of power chords and percussion develop an instantaneous flow of energy, and Eric Slick’s controlled agitation questions and states, “What is on your mind?/You do it all the time.” “Pieces” pushes a crusty grunge aesthetic, as the spoken lyrics linger, embedding them in one’s mind. “I need something that I can’t hold on to./Please believe I would never do you wrong.” What initially speaks to a fundamental instrumental rawness is balanced by a melodic refinement.

Dominic Angelella unlocks the window of vulnerability in “I Wanna Drink Poison.”  A simple percussion and guitar allow his delicate vocals to etch a confession that aches with authenticity. Eventually, the light breeze of instrumentation transforms into a powerful gust, and Angelella laments, “I Don’t See Anybody.” With it’s bare acoustic guitar lead, “Coronation Day” provides an uplifting tonal change – a brief yet well-placed breath of fresh air. “Deaf Gene” begins with a gentle drifting before reaching a high-pressure, uncorked rage –  “…My hands are tired it’s the first time since time…” releasing the frustration until Angelella’s vocals soothe Slick’s aggression giving it a moment to simmer before relinquishing the reins and roaring to its conclusion.

Densely packed drums and guitar quickly rouse one’s senses in “Place Of No Tomorrow,” revving the engine between short yet effective exhibitions of force. Its vocals are exuberant, while still having a disgruntled bite as that universally need for a new scene appears in the chorus reverberates, “God, this part of town is killing me./I need to breathe and see the place of no tomorrow.” Closing with its title track, Hardcore Friends leaves a lasting impression. As Angelella poignantly questions, “If I fall in love with an idea again, if I fall in love, would you make sure that I’m careful with it?” The guest vocals of Frances Quinlan (Hop Along) and Rachel Browne (Field Mouse/Anomie) offer a dynamic sense of earnest support as the album rumbles to a close.

A pair of hardcore friends in Eric Slick and Dominic Angelella has sealed its brotherly bond with an album that fuses punk-rock attitude and assertiveness with a resounding melodic pop sensibility. The energy and emotion are palpable. – Michael Colavita
