New Track: “Young & Alive” – Beach Slang

Posted on:

With bludgeoning drums and a burrowing, underlying guitar riff, Beach Slang have an easily attachable anthemic rocker on its hands with their latest "Young & Alive." The second single off their forthcoming album, The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us, pushes and pulls with equal intensity, finding its relatability to listeners on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. The LP is set for release on October 30 via Polyvinyl. (Photo by Ryan Muir)

New Music Video: “Woosh” – NAH

Posted on:

Found on NAH’s latest release Light As Fuck, this video for “Woosh," which premiered at Noisey, is an alarming display of intensity. Interlocking keys and percussion and establishing a tight beat, the track takes a heavy foreboding turn. Watch out for that creepy man in the mask and the juxtaposition of the red strobe interacting with the black & white footage. It may make you feel a little funny inside. (Photo by Christophe Crénel)

+HIRS+ Attacking the Status Quo at Everybody Hits Sept. 6

Posted on:

Some bands warm to the task incrementally shifting upwards to maximal speed and power. +HIRS+ is not one of those bands. The grindcore outfit unleashes primal revolts in obliterating sonic bursts, attacking the status quo with tireless kit-into-kindling percussion, thrashing guitar that momentarily simmers in a sludgy stomping march, and thundering vocals. It’s a sonic boom that rushes past you demanding that you get on board or get out of the way. The mind-warping, psych/shoegazing experience of Harsh Vibes marinates one’s brain, seeping in with a steady hypnotic sear, occupying a cosmic domain. In support of their latest LP Death & The Internet, Brooklyn trio Advaeta doses out soothing yet gritty shoegaze vibe, tearing through the upper atmosphere with an irritated traffic-jam edge. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., $5-$7, 9pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita

One Year Anniversary! at Lavender Town Sept. 5

Posted on:

Establishing and maintaining a space where like-minded people can express, perform, and absorb creativity is a complex/ tricky endeavor. DIY spaces are a vital component to a city’s underground and independent music scene. However, these spaces are often short-lived. Tonight the 1-year anniversary of Lavender Town is commemorated with a lineup befitting of celebration including the jarring emotional alt-rock exploits of Mumblr and melodic indie rockers The Mellowells. Abi Reimold with a full band delivers her accustomed clash of musical weather currents, resulting in a beautiful yet turbulent storm. The outlaw hip hop of Cornelius The Third, the funky surf-rock concoction of New Brunswick’s Professor Caveman, the tempered charge of New York punks InCircles, and acoustic folk rocker Curtis Cooper help to ring in the beginning of year 2. Cheers! Lavender Town, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more information.) 6:30pm, $3-$5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, September 4 – 7

Posted on:
Ok, so we admittedly were one the harshest critics of Made in America last year because of their unbelievable exclusion of talented homegrown Philly acts. Well, it seems that they are working on making it up to our city for the error of their ways with what might be the most local acts ever invited to the two-day festival.  Saturday is without a doubt when the Jay-Z-curated event brings out its heavy artillery with national and local names. If you want to find where your Philly peeps at, hanging at the Skate Stage will certainly be the place to see some familiar faces with Creepoid, Hop Along, Waxahatchee, Strand of Oaks, and Ground Up doing us proud. Meek Mill will also have the pleasure of sharing the Rocky Stage with heavy hitters Beyoncé, Modest Mouse, and De La Soul. On Sunday, you’ll find the lone Philly act Marian Hill bringing its sweet beats and alluring vocals to the Skate Stage. Ex-patriot Santigold is always a highlight of any bill that she appears on, and it’s certainly been way too long since we’ve heard anything from her. (Fingers crossed for a new album in works.) Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend, and sneak in some good drugs and drinks so you don’t have to consume any crappy, overpriced Budweiser – cheers!
