New Humanshapes EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Now that all the Pope stuff is behind us, it’s time to get back to what we love – local music. (But honestly, Philly being so desolate this weekend was pretty damn rad, especially if you were biking around; however, we do feel for all our service industry friends/struggling musicians who rely on the usual weekend business.) Below is a new album from post-punk/noise-rock outfit Humanshapes that will kick you back into gear on this dreary Monday morning, entitled Behavior. The EP was recorded by Swearin’s Kyle Gilbride (Wherever Audio) at beloved defunct DIY space Golden Tea House during this past summer. Humanshapes will be performing this Sunday, October 4 at The Fire.

Weekend Warrior, September 25 – 27

Posted on:
We’re not really sure why a visit from the Pope should fuck up getting around and in and out of Philly so bad, but it has, leaving us with limited things to do and ways to get there. However, we have put together our weekly list (below) of where you’ll find locals who are still ready to rock with you this weekend. But honestly, most of our staff has fled the city, and you’ll probably find the ones, who had nothing better to do, pounding drinks in someone’s backyard, waiting out the religious freaks. So everyone, enjoy your Pope-cation, and we’ll be catching up with you soon!

New Track: “Hopeful (Moon Bounce Remix)” – Bear Mountain

Posted on:

Corey Regensburg, a.k.a. Moon Bounce, has taken Bear Mountain’s “Hopeful,” and given a futuristic spin. The original version by the Vancouver outfit has a joyfully optimistically loose vibe. The remix shifts gears into warp speed, spring-loading the groove, subconsciously pulling you into that space-age island beat. It dares you to sit still; you won’t. Moon Bounce is scheduled to perform in Philly next on Sunday, October 11 at Kung Fu Necktie with QQQ, Aphra, and Bollywood Life.

Air is Human’s latest seasonal EP Equinox 2 will be released on September 30. “Build Pyramids” provides a glimpse into a dark, psychedelic ambiance as futuristic tones guide the tune, reaching an eerie, middling point before percussion gradually shifts it into a funky exploration. New Video: “Common Girl” (Live) – Free Cake For Every Creature

Posted on:

Free Cake For Every Creature’s Katie Bennett recently recorded a This Has Got to Stop Session at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn. Shot by Andrew Piccone., the video of “Common Girl,” found on the 2015 release Moving Songs (Double Double Whammy), captures the thoughtful observations and reflections that the lyrics conjure. The park provides an excellent setting allowing the natural feeling of the performance to shine through.

Dreambook Celebrating Rachel’s One Year Cancerversary at JB’s Sept. 24

Posted on:

Tonight, join guitarist/vocalist Rachel Wetzel and Dreambook in celebrating her one year anniversary of being cancer-free. Throughout her private struggle, Rachel used music to "escape all that was happening" and to help her "feel normal." So for her one year cancerversary, there is no other place that she’d rather be than performing on stage for us at Johnny Brenda’s. All proceeds collected will be donated to the Young Adult Cancer Connection. Please watch the video (below) that Rachel created documenting her over a year and half battle, and consider it your personal invitation to this "celebration of life." (BTW: I admittedly lost it when she rang the hope bell.) FUCK CANCER! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Downtown Club Opening for The Mynabirds at Boot & Saddle Sept. 23

Posted on:

April Harkanson’s vocals exhibit an enthralling hold, as if she’s communicating with every listener individually, in a leveled yet personally penetrating manner. Those bewitching lyrics are accentuated by a stabilizing rhythmic backend that steadily pushes a danceable high-voltage pace, while maintaining an underlying control. While segments of jagged guitar and shadowy synths stir this perilous place, you can’t help following that sound. Tonight, post-punk trio Downtown Club draws you into South Philly’s Boot & Saddle. After releasing their new album Lovers Know earlier this summer, the magnetizing 80s-nodding synth-pop sound of Laura Burhenn-led The Mynabirds headline, while organicly catchy Minneapolis trio Bad Bat Hats offers a relaxed rock vibe that dabbles across the sonic board, hitting on folk, noise, etc. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Music Video: “Rock Bottom” – Modern Baseball

Posted on:

"You guys are that sad, awkward boy band that people relate to. So sell that." In Modern Baseball‘s latest music video for "Rock Bottom," which premiered yesterday at Pitchfork, frontman Brendan Lukens tries to perform after receiving those unnerving words of encouragement as nightmarish scenes from high school play out as his backdrop. Lukens eventually escapes the overwhelming video set that was directed by Kyle Thrash. Hopefully he’ll make it back in time for the band’s extensive upcoming tour with PUP, Jeff Rosenstock, and Tiny Moving Parts, which will close out in Philly on Saturday, December 12 at Union Transfer.
