We’re about to celebrate The Deli Philly’s 7th Anniversary this Saturday, October 10 at PhilaMOCA with The Orange Drop, Blood Sound, Hello Shark, and Suburban Living (DJ set). Y-Not Radio was nice enough to ask me to takeover its station and play some tracks from up-and-coming Philly artists that I’ve been listening to lately. You can tune in HERE to what I’ll be spinning tomorrow (Wednesday) at 11am and at 10pm (replay). And I hope to throwdown with you this weekend – much love! – Q.D. Tran
New Track: “Creeks and Moans” – Chelsea Sue Allen
Chelsea Sue Allen has a new record coming out this fall entitled Lonely Age, which is quite fitting with her sound exuding maturity, solemness and desolation. Just take a listen to her first single from the album, "Creeks and Moans." You can also experience her performing live this evening at The Fire along with Vilebred as the support for the kick-off of Cowmuddy‘s residency.
New Music Video: “Your Love is a Mystery” – Johnny Showcase
Absurdist funk/soul act Johnny Showcase has a new music video for his single "Your Love is a Mystery." It was directed by Bethany Ditnes and Brian Troy, and you’ll find Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens as most of the video’s backdrop with a guest appearance by Isaiah Zagar. The track can be found on Johnny Showcase’s new album The Octopus!, which is out today, and he’ll be celebrating its surfacing at Underground Art’s on Friday, October 16 with Minka and Miss Martha Graham Cracker.
New Alex G LP Available for Streaming
As the temperature takes a downward turn, a little Beach Music may be in order. Alex G’s new full-length album, which will be released on October 9 via Domino, is currently streaming over at Hype Machine. Its delicate, intimate melodies help to temper this brash change in climate. Catch Alex G on Saturday, November 14 at First Unitarian Church.
New Track: “Jet Black, Starlit” – A Sunny Day in Glasgow
While on tour in support of their LP Sea When Absent, A Sunny Day in Glasgow recorded the songs that will be featured on their forthcoming double EP Planning Weed Like It’s Acid / Life is Loss. The EP’s opener “Jet Black, Starlit” compiles multiple textures, while enchanting vocals cut through a variety of instrumental components, creating a futuristic shoegaze-y cloud, that’s relaxing at its core and chaotic along the edges. Planning Weed Like It’s Acid / Life is Loss will be released digitally and on CD via Mis Ojos Discos on November 13.

Littler Opening for Ought & LVL UP at Boot & Saddle Oct. 5
The continuous sense of considering your next move and hoping it’s a step in the right direction, second-guessing catching your mind in gridlock – Littler seems to get that. As we await the release aptly titled Of Wandering, the grunge-punk four-piece opens this evening at Boot & Saddle. Littler finds space to cut in close, unfiltered in lyrical integrity while stepping out and smashing ahead, blasting the roadblocks – consciously contemplative and yet unafraid. The melodically heavy, grit-oozing, earnest sound of LVL UP sticks in your head in the middle slot, while Montreal post-punks Ought headline, touring in support of their freshly released sophomore LP Sun Coming Down. Free Download: “Dance (Get Off Your Ass)” – Queen of Jeans
Are we starting to experience a trend in Philly? All female-trio Queen of Jeans, which features former members of Work Drugs and The Interest Group, delves into the delightful sounds of 50’s/60’s girl groups. Where Louie Louie mixes it with a bit more grit from garage/surf rock, Queen of Jeans charms with a gentle lilt and polished harmonies and melodies. Take a listen to and download for free the band’s debut single "Dance (Get Off Your Ass)."
New Track: “Anything, Anything” (Dramarama Cover) – Beach Slang
Beach Slang have their debut LP The Things We Do to Find People Like Us coming out on October 30 via Polyvinyl Records. Make Some Moves w/Janelle at KFN Oct. 4
Sundays suck. Almost always serving as a sobering (pun fully intended) transition into the workweek, the day of rest often turns into a day of faulty hangover cures and pre-emptive stress about dealing with your awkward work colleagues or classes. Don’t let this weekend’s excitement fade! Instead of sulking around wishing the next five days away, make some moves at Kung Fu Necktie with Janelle. The indie-rock three-piece will surely quench your thirst for a second Saturday with their electro shoegaze-y twist on, say, Real Estate or similar narrative-based groups. Composed of Ryan Bott (vocals/synth/computer), Marcus Elper (vocals/drums/slide guitar) and Chris Huber (bass), Janelle is able to effectively elicit excitable dancing and somber reflection. They’ll be sharing the night’s ticket with fuzzy surf-pop group COIN PURSE, LA-based psychedelic-groove band Tiny Creatures, and Philly hip-hop/funk-rock outfit Wetbrain. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ – Blake Oetting
Power Animal Opening for Jeffrey Lewis + Los Bolts at Safety Meeting Oct. 3
Listening to Power Animal, a.k.a. Keith Hampson, is an exploratory sojourn of sound. There’s so much going on as multiple layers intermingle, and yet that densely stacked byproduct isn’t confusing or heavy because the pieces pull in a united direction. It’s an airy, meditative space that you are willing to escape into, dynamically lifting one’s headspace. Tonight at Safety Meeting, this Spazz Presents show also includes the blissful blasts of zany carnival troupe OhBree joining in on the fun, while the youthful folk-punk of Asbury Park’s Teenage Halloween also help to set to the table for the legendary Joe Jack Talcum and the delightfully quirky adventure of Jeffrey Lewis + Los Bolts. Safety Meeting, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more information.), 7pm, $5-$10, All Ages – Michael Colavita
