Let the Situation Get Weird w/Moon Bounce at W/N W/N Nov. 8

Posted on:

One could choose to let their week wind down, or you can let the situation get weird in a delightful, slinky, strange manner. Moon Bounce, a.k.a. Corey Regensburg, with a sampling of new material, slides into W/N W/N – velvety soulful R&B that takes on a morphing, glitch-fueled, light-speed ear toward the future. Regenburg gravitationally gets you within arms reach, taking the familiar and flipping it sideways, pushing the boundaries. Nashville’s Meth Dad, otherwise known as Tyler Walker, dishes out positive vibes in joyous, electro-dance party doses. With a freshly released record Shhh!!!!, Austin via Toronto’s Shmu, a.k.a. Sam Chown, canvasses a plethora of genres to create an electro-psych-noise scenario. "Club Mega DJs" Grave Goods and Sam Greens round out an evening that promises never to stand still. Weekend Warrior, November 6 – 8

Posted on:
There is a certain charm to watching a local band rise through the music industry and claim their visibility in a more macro cultural lens. Living in Philadelphia, we have been lucky to get to enjoy this process again and again the past few years. One of the more recent Philly exports and former Deli Philly Artist of the Year is The Districts. The quartet makes accessible indie rock of the highest quality, infused with blues, Americana and folk elements, punctuated by lyrics dripping with emotional resonance. The Districts have both an instrumental and lyrical maturity, resembling a more composed, introspective Twin Peaks. The former Lititz, PA natives are headlining the E Factory this evening, and the sweet bill will be rounded out by Lady Lamb, a rocker version of Fiona Apple with haunting vocalization, and local indie-rock favorites, Purples. New Video: “Arms Like Boulders” (Live – Austin City Limits) – The War on Drugs

Posted on:

Though we have been happy to see The War on Drugs gain critical acclaim for their last two LPs Lost In The Dream and Slave Ambient, we have to admit that when we come to their shows these days, we always long to hear soon-to-be classics like "Taking the Farm" and "Arms Like Boulders." Well, PBS will be airing this Saturday, November 7 at 7pm the group’s recent appearance at Austin City Limits, where they performed our latter fave. There was no Adam Granduciel guitar spike like at the end of "Under Pressure" at Treasure Island Festival, but we’ll take it! (Photo by Scott Newton)

The Spirit of the Beehive Opening for The Hotelier at FUC Nov. 5

Posted on:

Philly’s own The Spirit of the Beehive effortlessly go from comforting, shadowy shoegaze to aggressive, grimy grunge, making them one of our favorite up-and-coming bands lately. This uncanny ability has also recently caught the attention of Jade Tree Records. The well-respected Delaware indie label has signed our young upstarts, and will be releasing their next full-length album in 2016, which we are very excited to hear. The local quintet is on a stacked R5 bill this evening at the First Unitarian Church where they’ll be opening for buzzing Massachusetts punks The Hotelier, Cleveland emo rockers Runaway Brother, and Long Beach, NY pop punks Oso Oso, whom they are currently on tour with. Come out & get sweaty in the Church’s basement tonight! First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 7:30pm, $12, All Ages – Alexis V.

Lockets Opening for Keep Shelly In Athens at JB’s Nov. 4

Posted on:

With the advent of and consequent obsession with synth-based production, subtly nuanced genres were able to proliferate from the seemingly monolithic musical fields we were accustomed to. Starting with the Moog Modular in the 60s, influencing groups like The Monkees and The Doors, and extending all the way to 2015 and the seemingly endless variations of vaporwave, synthesizers have undoubtedly made their mark on the music industry. Lockets, a Philly-based project headed by producer Todd Mendelsohn and vocalist Melissa Ricca, exemplifies many of the new sounds afforded by this technology. In a similar vain to Beach House, Lockets is a pop group whose affect, while bolstered by their lyrics and Ricca’s enchanting vocal quality, is just as much attributable to the ethereal, hazy production elements. Lockets will opening for chillwavers Keep Shelly In Athens tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, kicking off a night of relaxed, beautifully-produced synth-based tunes. Make sure you get a chance to catch both bands. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Blake Oetting
