Posted on:

Shotgun beers, shoot off fireworks and commit a little arson, smash a couple of TVs, and enjoy more youthfully deviant acts with Vicky Speedboat in their debut music video for "Passing Through Wales." Modern Baseball‘s Sean Huber and W.C. Lindsay‘s William Lindsay unleash some punk exuberance with the lead single from their new project. The track is off their forthcoming self-released EP Two Years No Basement, due out November 27.

New Track: “The Waking World” (Feat. I Break Horses) – Lushlife/CSLSX

Posted on:

Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Haldar, has a new collaborative album, Ritualize, with Philly productions crew CSLSX, coming out on February 19 via Western Vinyl. He also recruited a little help for Swedish indie outfit I Break Horses for his latest single. Lushlife states, "’The Waking World’ is a surreal look at the mindset of Mark David Chapman on the morning he assassinates John Lennon. The frenetic quiet-then-loud production from CSLSX, and I Break Horses’ anthemic but melancholy chorus offered the perfect backdrop to zoom in and spit rhymes that explore my own relationship to depression, adolescent sensitivity, and obsession in the context of a single culture-altering moment." You can stream the track below, which was featured earlier today at The Line of Best Fit. (Photo by Ebru Yildiz)

Explore the Rambling Americana of Tin Horses at KFN Nov. 11

Posted on:

Everybody knows Kiel Everett can rock the big stage playing bass for local hot shots Purling Hiss, but on his own time, he leads the band Tin Horses, who will be sharing a stage with Promise Land Sound and Zachary Cale tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. In Tin Horses, Everett takes a slightly different approach to the vintage rock ‘n’ roll sound. There is still a healthy reverence for ’70s titans like Clapton and Neil Young, who gave the guitar an immortal voice, but when Everett takes up a classic six-string and principal creative authority, his music takes a distinctly twangy shape that differentiates it from Purling Hiss and other contemporary psychedelia-infused acts. The group borrows a larger portion of its sound from acts like The Eagles and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and refracts it in a similar way to more recent torchbearers like Wilco, choosing to explore rambling Americana qualities. As is to be expected of any band rooted in ’70s rock, there are frequent movements into guitar-focused interludes, but the solos tend to be more expressive and poignant than they are shreddy or virtuosic. As an added incentive to attend this evening, Tin Horses will undoubtedly be showing off its new repertoire of songs from their latest release Mental Flowers. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. New Track: “JOBS” – Slaughter Beach, Dog

Posted on:

Slaughter Beach, Dog (Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball) has released a new track “JOBS.” The song continues a tradition of lyrical depth to explain life’s ongoing conundrums. The ponderous wordplay wraps around your head touching on employment, love, religion, etc. on the continuous existential journey. Though consciously contemplative, the single doesn’t retain an overly heavy feel, letting the lyrics stir without holding you down. (Photo by Jessica Flynn)

Son Step Opening for Sinkane at JB’s Nov. 10

Posted on:

Son Step is a group that pushes the expectations of convention, with a sound that is a refined, tight unit. In this way, the songs offer a glimpse of cleansing clarity, while simultaneously offering a new perspective, blending the unfamiliar within a stable setting. The instrumental energy is fluid, undeniably dynamic, and measured to precision. With a freshly cooked batch of sonic treats coming out of the oven this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, the band expands the musical palette. Marrying sleek R&B while inserting snippets of rock, Steven A. Clark, whoreleased The Lonely Roller a couple months back, bridges the divide between the persistent, percussion-filled, funky, free-jazz, wide-reaching, universal sound of Sinkane, a.k.a. Ahmed Gallab. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Music Video: “Badvertise” – Dr. Dog

Posted on:

Dr. Dog’s creative collaboration with Pig Iron Theatre Company, Swamp Is On, was an oddly charming extraterrestrial experience. While we await word on a new album, this music video for “Badvertise,” takes a humorous spin on infomercial culture. The costumes are reminiscent of the Beastie Boys’s “Intergalactic,” showcasing a playful demeanor while transmitting a catchy song through the scope of another space. The video was directed by Ilan Bachrach and Josh Higgason.

Telepathic Opening for Atlantic Thrills at KFN Nov. 9

Posted on:

After putting Bleeding Rainbow to rest, Sarah Everton and Rob Garcia have embarked on a new project, Telepathic. Recruiting drummer Paul Brinkley, they self-released their debut EP Power of Ten earlier this year, which was mixed by Kyle Gilbride (Wherever Audio). Where Everton and Garcia might have confused critics and fans with their evolution from garage-pop duo to post-punk four-piece in their previous endeavor, Telepathic pushes the pedal to th floor right from the get-go, combining a punk attitude with grungy noise-pop. You can catch them live this evening (with Hurry‘s Matt Scottoline filling in on drums) at Kung Fu Necktie opening for Providence, RI surf-rock trio Atlantic Thrills, who recently dropped its second LP Vices, and local lo-fi psych rockers Honey Radar.
