New Video: “Morning” (Live – Swell Tone Session) – Abi Reimold

Posted on:

Filmmaker Bob Sweeney and Shana Hartzel direct and deliver a layered, captivating video in a dark and drafty wooded area as sing-songwriter Abi Reimold explores “Morning” in this Swell Tone Session. Found on the Forget EP, this live version takes the stirring looped guitar, and combines it with Reimold’s hauntingly heartfelt vocals as the choral sounding background vocals mesh with chilling warmth. The result is breathtaking.

New Video: NEST FEST 2 (Documentary)

Posted on:

Documentary filmmaker Matthew Yeandel recently shared his latest project with co-conspirators Ben Cohen and Deanna Brown – Bahama Jeff Productions. Nest Fest 2 captures the gritty, creative and supportive nature of Philly DIY space The Nest by taking us into their now annual blow out. You’ll find local artists Line Leader, RFA, Husky Bundles, and many others sharing their music and experiences. House resident and fest co-organizer Joey eloquently reveals, "I want people to come here and see what we do, and I want it to influence them enough to a point where they feel genuinely impacted." Much love to The Nest and the rest of Philly’s DIY community for helping to make our music scene so rad! (Photo by Lina Xinos)

“Krispy Kareem and Chill” at Venue Boy Nov. 22

Posted on:

Join Krispy Kareem, Gingerlys, Old Maybe, and Line Leader for a Sunday Fun Day show at Venue Boy. Krispy Kareem will bring their wide-ranging sound that spans from chugging folk-pop inspired rippers to emo-tinged pop-punk anthems – and sometimes both within the same song. The band has a talent for moving through a diverse, sometimes genre-traversing dynamic range, employing guitar flourishes that tip the cap to the whimsical fretwork of Cap’n Jazz as well as classic tenor-baritone vocal interplay that fits together like lamb and tuna fish. Gingerlys adhere to a similarly energetic pop-punk style, but soak the whole production in reverb. The result is something that sounds like Slumberland circa 1996 – I’m talking bands like Velocity Girl or Rocketship, drenched in liquidy synth pads. Soft, murmured male-female vocals further locate them within the fuzzy tradition of MBV-influenced 90s noise pop. Old Maybe composes succinct, minimalist, occasionally dreary, always otherworldly bedroom ditties that capture fleeting, sometimes inconsequential moments and emotions. The project at times seems like a spider web used to ensnare passing sonic ideas, but the inspiration underlying each experimentation is clear. Line Leader is another lively, garage-punk-inclined act who weave through unwavering surf jingles and raw, driving Wipers-style jams. Venue Boy, (Please contract one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5-$7, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock

Weekend Warrior, November 20 – 22

Suburban Living seats itself comfortably among bands that are helping to define the modern day new wave/dream-pop sound, borrowing the upbeat, danceable rhythms from groups like The Cure and melding them with the textures and atmospherics associated with acts such as Cocteau Twins and Slowdive. Wielding these colorful influences alone leaves little to be desired for the average scenester or Captured Tracks junkie, but Suburban Living adds another distinct voice and flavor to the field of atmosphere-inclined, danceable pop. Instantly catchy, twinkling guitar melodies suspend themselves over a consistent, pulsing horizon of drums – all floating above a foundational bass progression that gives the song a firm anchor to the terrestrial. And you have the chance to experience it for yourself tonight at Ortlieb’s, where you can untether your mind from these analytical musings and concrete references, and start drifting through the ether with Suburban Living like you’re supposed to. They’ll be accompanied by Infinity Girl, who take a more jagged, fuzzy approach to the new dream-pop model, while still paying homage to The Cure’s knack for a funky, punctuative bass line contained within a no-nonsense, driving post-punk song. Psych-pop outfit Teen Men will round out the bill with DJ Jeff Zeigler on the wheels of steel throughout the night. Hound Opening for Diarrhea Planet at Underground Arts Nov. 20

Posted on:

As the week draws to a close, one eagerly awaits that opportunity to break loose, when the work is behind you (at least for a moment) and the volume dial goes way up. Hound is the type of band you’ll want to push the decibel levels with. Loaded with menacing metal riffs and a thriving, full-bore backend, the intensity is instantaneous with raw, raunchy jams that pound into your skull in a way that classic metal/hard rock enthusiast will appreciate – heavy with an uncompromising force prepared for all comers. Tonight, Hound forges the way to a pair of Nashville bands, the loose-rolling, tight-turning immediacy of Music Band and the shred-tastic, pop-rock marriage known as Diarrhea Planet. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $13, 21+ – Michael Colavita
