Stream Lithuania’s Set Recorded at KXLU

Posted on:

Back in November, Lithuania recorded a live session over at LA’s KXLU Radio. The set offers a rollicking sampling of the band’s album Hardcore Friends, available via Lame-O Records. Among the highlights,  “Clumsy & Forgotten”, quickly transitions into “Place of No Tomorrow” while “Hardcore Friends” and “Pieces” provide the final push. Lithuania is scheduled to perform at Everybody Hits February 27, as part of a lineup that also includes Little Big League and Pouty.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: The Mysteries

Posted on:
The roots of Philly’s indie music scene have always been influenced by psych-pop/rock outfits like Mazarin, Dr. Dog, and The War on Drugs. So it should be no surprise that you’ll find a group such as The Mysteries atop our Featured Artist(s) Poll. Started by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Anthony Marchione (and a kiss), you’ll find the band channeling The Doors as well as more contemporary torchbearers of the beloved genres. The local quartet is set to crack open the festivities for this Saturday’s Queen of Jeans’s record release celebration with Louie Louie at Kung Fu Necktie, but first – unlock more of the mysteries of The Mysteries in our interview with Marchione HERE.

New Track: “Wait, Wait” – Lantern

Posted on:

The anticipation increases when listening to “Wait, Wait” the latest song to emerge from Lantern’s forthcoming album Black Highways And Green Garden Roads, slated for release via Sophomore Lounge (vinyl) and Fixture Records (cassette) on February 19.  The song channels a vintage 60’s girl group/ soul sound.  Smooth soulful harmony and simple crisp instrumentation provide a polish while still highlighting a yearning and the voice-over into place rather well.  (Photo By Peter Woodford)

Weekend Warrior, January 22 – 24

Upon first listening to Philly’s self-described punk rock band Cayetana, it may be difficult to isolate a traditionally punk influence beneath the layers of pop mindfulness, stirring melodies, and undisguised, often poignant sincerity. The songs have a driving pace that is somehow unhurried and tunes that are downright whistle-able, accompanied by lead singer Augusta Koch’s Emily Haines-esque voice that never quite breaches the boundaries of “inside voice.” The minimalist guitar progressions and dynamic energy of the songs are unmistakably traceable to punk rock, but the connection becomes clearer when you examine the ethos behind the music. Lyrics from different songs seem to unite around the concept of carrying on as usual, despite knowing you’re part of an arbitrary system – sort of reminiscent of the early punks’ understandings of the sinister “institutions,” eh? After all these years, what still makes punk punk are these internalized feelings of alienation and dispossession, which, with punk bands like Cayetana, are being combated through emotional transcendence rather than generalized aggression… Which is also a movement that self-fulfillingly defines itself as punk simply by subverting its predecessor. This three-piece punk outfit will be having their Tired Eyes EP release show at PhilaMOCA this Saturday accompanied by Mannequin Pussy, a Philly essential who comes from the more aggressive, irreverent side of the punk spectrum, Katie Ellen, a.k.a. Anika Pyle of Chumped, who will bring a passionate lo-fi melancholy to the stage, and Jeff Riddle & the Bella Vista Social Club. PhilaMOCA, 531 N 12th St., 7:30, $10, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock

Update: Due to inclement weather this show has been postponed to 1/30/16.

Honey Radar & Telepathic Co-release Show at JB’s Jan. 22

Posted on:

Congregate this evening at Johnny Brenda’s to commemorate not one but two new recordings – one by Honey Radar and the other from Telepathic. Led by Jason Henn, Honey Radar continues to serve up heady psych-pop on their new EP Giraffe, available via Chunklet Industries. The vocals waft, expanding around the gratifying immediacy of the granular grooves. These condensed sonic rides glimmer while retaining rougher edges. Sarah Everton & Rob Garcia (formerly of Bleeding Rainbow) slice through the cosmic sludge, sharing vocal duties. Rushing forward as the clean heat of guitar wields with fuzz, creating a gripping composed sense of urgency, their new self-released record Time Release is potently pulsing. Maryland-based rockers Repelican crack the seal on this night with a combination of stealthy smoothness and rattle. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
