Church Girls Fill the Musical Void at JB’s Feb. 19

Posted on:
Mariel Beaumont started Church Girls as a side project to “fill the musical void in her life.” The once rebellious teen spent her formative years attending basement shows, drinking forties, and enjoying the best times of her life. So it’s not surprising that the ache and love for music have seeped into her bones, like many of us, who hear its calling to get involved. Church Girls received critical acclaim from the gate for its debut single “Young Planes,” and recently released its latest album Thousand Lives, which will be on display tonight. Now, solidified as four-piece, the band is set to headline Johnny Brenda’s. Also along for support are Queen of Jeans, who have been pleasing ears and making a name for themselves with vibrant, swoon-worthy pop, and Madalean Gauze, who is another feminine force and rising star in the Philly music community. The ladies will be ruling the stage this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

With Queen of Jeans‘s Matheson Glass having spent a stint in the band Work Drugs, a remix was bound to be spawned from their creative relationship. Below is Work Drugs’s reworking of the ladies’ debut single, "Dance (Get Off Your Ass)," which does a fine job at getting you to follow directions. You can find Queen of Jeans this evening at Johnny Brenda’s opening for Church Girls.

New Lushlife + CSLSX LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The day is almost here. We heard about the collaboration between emcee/producer Lushlife and production trio CSLSX a few years ago during a session with Lush for our Choice/Cuts series. That feels like a lifetime ago. However, we are happy to finally get to share with you – Ritualize. Hopefully this record will bring Lushlife and CSLSX all the recognition that they so deserve. The LP also features rad contributions from Killer Mike, Ariel Pink, RJD2, Nightlands, Yikes The Zero, and many others. You need this album for your collection, and you will be able to find it tomorrow at Western Vinyl, or grab it next Saturday, February 27 at their record release show at JB’s. (Photo by Ebru Yildiz)

Set on the streets of Paris and directed by Glassface, Tunji Ige’s new music video for “On My Grind” plays with perception. A noir look is punched up with splashes of color and array of layered imagery that hits on multiple dimensions. Bounce along a scenic view, and follow the seamlessly quick-fired transitions. The Deli Philly’s Best of 2015 Readers’/Fans’ Poll Results!

Posted on:

The results are in for The Deli Philly’s Fans’/Readers’ Year End Poll! We’d like to thank everyone who voted in support of their favorite artists, and a big congrats to everyone who made the poll this year!

1. When it came to rallying fans for support, alt rockers Howlish were like lightning out of the starting gate, and never looked back. The quartet, which consists of Mark Watter, Karl Germanovich, Taylor Cullen and Brendan Sweeney, made a name for itself in 2015 with the release of 0uter (available via Sniffling Indie Kids). 2. This year’s Open Submission Poll Winners, YJY, fought valiantly, and certainly grabbed the attention of our writers and hopefully our readers with their fuzz-pop anthems. Take a listen to the band’s debut EP Couch Surfin USA.

3. Hurricane Hoss, a.k.a. Sarah Williams Larsen, proves that this city still has a lot of sass and country left in it. Larsen is an award-winning contest fiddler. Having lent her skills to Philly favorite sons like Dr. Dog and Ben Arnold, the gypsy-cowgirl sounds ready to step out into the forefront.

Honorable Mention: Shout out to I Think Like Midnight! The instrumental rock outfit features Andrew Chalfen (The Trolleyvox), Dean Sabatino (Dead Milkmen), and J. Robert Lennon (The Starry Mountain Sweetheart Band).

Thanks to everyone who shared and voted, and remember to keep an eye out for The Deli Philly’s final composite for the Best of 2015 Emerging Artists!

Much love,

The Deli Staff

“Everybody Wants To Love You,” the second single from Japanese Breakfast’s forthcoming debut album Psychopomp, lifts you onto a daydreaming pillow. The vocal interplay between Michelle Zauner (Little Big League) & Sam Cook-Parrott (Radiator Hospital) establishes a loose yet endearing feeling, as the instrumentation rolls and pops in a cascading fashion. Psychopomp will be released on April 1 via Yellow K Records, and you can now stream “Everybody Wants To Love You” over at The A.V. Club.
