Wishing Well, the new EP from Carol Cleveland Sings (which includes Thomas Hughes of The Spinto Band and Gretchen Lohse) was released yesterday. Directed by French artist Anne Horel, the video for “Ennui” captures the joyful electro-pop vibe, added with an assortment of feel-good home-video pet imagery running across the screen, adorned in glasses, costumes, imposed singing etc. It is silly and playful in a way that’ll make you smile. Carol Cleveland Sings debuts their expanded lineup on April 22, at Everybody Hits on a bill that also includes Lomez Place of Worship and Jo Passed.
Blood Sound Opening for Humans at Underground Arts April 7
A grey cloud hovers ahead, ominously blanketing the day. However, it may represent a precursor to tonight’s activities in the cozy warehouse space of Underground Arts. Blood Sound delivers haunting synth-sheathed, danceable grooves that roll in front of you. Acknowledging the perplexing thoughts that linger in one’s headspace, while providing an invigorating sense of active movement, the band galvanizes intimacy into action, breaking the personal confusion out of its private cell, diffusing the nightmare and transforming that nightmarish energy into smooth motion. Tonight, Blood Sound is sandwiched between the psych-dance excursions of Risky Disko and the pulsating electro-pop of Vancouver duo and JUNO Awards nominee, Humans. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita
New Music Video: “Floaty Feeling, Blue” – Weekender
Director Jay Yachetta captures a panoramic perspective in Weekender’s new music video for the title-track off their latest EP Floaty Feeling, Blue (PaperCup Music). It utilizes textures of illumination as well as the broader picture to create a pleasant pensive state. Editor Ryan Putnam challenges the natural vibrancy, when an intense tonal change briefly triggers warping/curving of the imagery. The band will be performing in Philly on Saturday, July 9 at Johnny Brenda’s.
New Videos: Punks in Vegas Stripped Down Session – Beach Slang’s James Alex
James Alex’s emotive songwriting takes center stage in his acoustic performance for Punks in Vegas Stripped Down Session. The Beach Slang frontman proves that whether in the spotlight with his full band or on a leather couch alone his songs resonate to the core of one’s desire for a bit of escapism. You’ll find some release with these bare-bones versions of "Too Late to Die Young," "Dirty Cigarettes," and "Ride The Wild Haze."
New Music Video: “Rollerdyke” – Queen of Jeans
A little girl is caught in the middle of a heated, animated argument between a couple in Queen of Jeans‘ latest Lu De Santis video for “Rollerdyke”. However, that argument takes an odd turn when said couple dons horse masks and proceeds to get down with the groove in lieu of butting heads. Queen of Jeans is set to perform at World Café Live on April 17 as part of the Beyond the Bars Fundraiser show alongside The Districts, Frances Quinlan, Ben Arnold, Milton, and The Bul Bey.
New Track: “Inkwell” – Howlish
Howlish slithers into your earhole with its new single "Inkwell". A sinister guitar provides forshadowing before achy vocals reveal the mystery. What will be the reveal?

New Video: Tired of Tomorrow (Nothing Documentary – Part I)
Nothing embrace the bleak, grimness of Philly in the first part of their documentary for Tired of Tomorrow. Nicky Palermo’s open honesty, compounded by the desolate feel of black & white footage, provides a sense of truth, which, despite its darkness, is equally refreshing. The video offers a small glimpse into his youth and a behind-the-scenes view of the band’s creative process.
New Spring Onion EP Available for Streaming & Download
Please Relax, the latest release from Spring Onion, a.k.a. Catherine Dwyer, is an introspective/self-observational bedroom-folk EP. Its concise lyricism combines with simplistic instrumentation to creat easily-absorbed, candidly thoughtful moments. Dwyer enlists the help of fellow BFGS member Santi Slade as well as Carmen Perry (Addie Pray, Sports) for the recordings, which are the right blend of sweet nostalgia and sincerity.
New Video: Tripping in the Dark (Modern Baseball Documentary)
Tripping in the Dark is a short documentary that explores Modern Baseball’s formation, and then provides personal insight into the events that shaped their recent past and the making of their forthcoming record Holy Ghost, which will be released on may 13 via Run For Cover Records. After recapping the band’s beginnings, director Kyle Thrash zooms into the heart-hitting, personal struggles of MoBo members Jake Ewald and Brendan Lukens. The death of his grandfather (a person who united his family) proved to be especially difficult, while Lukens experienced deep depression that caused suicidal thoughts and resulted in a diagnosis of bi-polar disorder. Thankfully, both individuals have emerged from those trying times; however, the documentary is a sincere gripping reminder that there is no shame in seeking help during troubled times. New Video: Kids Interview Bands – Kurt Vile
Check out Kurt Vile getting totally awkward during his tough interview session with Piper from Kids Interview Bands! The Q&A took place on Kurt’s tour bus before his show on April 2, 2016 at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH. Is it more awkward than Matablog’s April Fools’ Day Kurt Vile GQ cover (above)? You tell us.
Have a Really Good Time w/Sad Sacks Wild Jim Banfill & His Rolling Rocks at Bourbon & Branch April 4
Wild Jim Banfill & His Rolling Rocks simply sound like they are having a really good time being sad sacks. Whether its the spirit of Ween‘s classic 12 Golden Country Greats found in their latest single "If This Ol’ Dick Stretched To Nashville" or the pining away for Rashida Jones (which I totally get) in "Rashida Jones-Banfill," the new project from The Tough Shits‘ Mark Banfill tickles the funny bone through well-crafted garage-pop/counrty-soul ditties. Grabbin’ a few beers, and kickin’ it with Banfill and the gang is definitely your best local music alternative to watching the NCAA Championship tonight. (Yasss – it’s almost over!) They’ll also be joined by Philly’s own Miami Sludge and Maria & The Moans, as well as San Francisco producer Al Lover. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.
