New Music Video: “Caitlyn” – JANK

Posted on:

The video for “Caitlyn,” directed by Ian Neisser, finds the trio of JANK waking, baking, and then horsing around with their dog costume-adorned friend Shane Davidson. While the first half the footage is playful, the second finds the band performing the melodically-frenzied track in a basement. Awkward Pop Songs, which was released on tape via Honest Face Records/Funeral Sounds) is set for a vinyl release on May 20 via Creep Records. Also, keep your eyes/ears peeled for a new EP. Video Premiere: Tired of Tomorrow (Nothing Documentary – Part III)

Posted on:

We absolutely LOVE documentaries. If you’ve been keeping up with your daily Deli news, then you’ve probably been following along, as we have, with Nothing on their journey to complete their forthcoming album Tired of Tomorrow, through its complementary six-part documentary, directed by Don Argott, who also brought us the highly informative The Art of the Steal. (BTW: Fuck The Barnes Foundation!) The grainy black & white footage in the first episode shows frontman Nicky Palermo taking you on a tour of his Philadelphia and inside Conshohocken’s Studio 4, leading into part deux and the introduction of producer extraordinaire Will Yip and Collect Records head honcho and former Thursday frontman Geoff Rickly. It feels painfully awkward as you watch Rickly gush about Nothing and how he’s bet the future of his label on the band. Not so spoiler alert, since this documentary is being released by the group’s current label Relapse Records, and if you’ve been following the drama around Collect and its financial backer – dickhead and pharma bro Martin Shkreli, then you’ll know why this episode is a bit hard to watch at times. We’ve been really enjoying the Tired of Tomorrow doc, and we’re excited to announce that we’ve been asked to premiere the final four episodes of Nothing’s tumultuous journey to release their new album, coming out May 13. In episode three, you’ll find Yip and the band hard at work and play in the studio as the album’s first track begins to take shape. Remember to tune back in to see and hear how the rest of Tired of Tomorrow unfolds; you definitely don’t want to miss it!

Heart Harbor EP Release Show at Tin Angel April 23

Posted on:

Led by singer-songwriter Kerry Hallett, Heart Harbor play a show in the intimate setting of Tin Angel to commemorate the release of their new EP Tender Trap. The album exudes an innate heart-rending closeness that is set loose by tightly spun folk-pop instrumentation. With an ability to peel back to the pit lyrically and then coat those wrestling, dreamy emotions with delicately layered harmony and larger encompassing production, Heart Harbor paints a broader, detailed picture. The dusty, road-worn, aching folk of Julia Rainer is tucked between tonight headliner and New England multi-instrumentalist/singer-songwriter Audrey Ryan. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, April 22 – 24

Philly’s own Ranch Records is hosting a Ram 1500-sized event at First Unitarian this Saturday, and I can guarantee there will be a hemi under that hood, a.k.a. top tier performances by your favorite Ranch Jams bands. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Ranch’s output, they’re the ones behind Philadelphia’s finest gloom-punk and junk-rock bands like The Spirit of The Beehive, whose grunge re-meets shoegaze sound ranges from mudflap grit to pure, synthetic motor oil, open road ramblers Dogs on Acid with their whimsical and unfurling power pop, GUNK, whose smudgy slacker-pop songs drawl and tweak like truck-stop thugs, NAH, whose noisy, heavily percussive, electronic glitch music is the sonic equivalent of that rusty, rattling but reliable hemi engine passing the 200,000 mark, and Congenital Death, the reckless, passing-on-the-right power drivers, whose sheer velocity and bellicosity will make you scared for your life. All of the bands mentioned above and more will be playing the Big Gig Truck festival so truck it on over to First Unitarian for a piece of the action. First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 6pm, $12, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock

WXPN’s Key Fest Returns at MilkBoy Philly April 22 – 24

Posted on:
WXPN returns to MilkBoy Philly this weekend with its second annual Key Fest. Each bill has been tailored to bring together performances by like-minded local artists for an evening. Kicking things off tonight, you’ll find plenty of hip-hop grooves and electro-soul with Ill Doots, Kate Faust, Hardwork Movement, and Joie Kathos. On Saturday, indie rock/pop-tinged singer-songwriters will be the focus. The Deli Philly’s 2015 runner-up for Emerging Artist(s) of the Year, Kississippi, will be holding down the primetime slot as the evening’s headliner, supported by Shelf Life, Cherry, and Madalean Gauze. And finally, the folkies will be out in Center City this Sunday, and bringing the mellow will be the sweet sounds of Hezekiah Jones, Howlish, Lou, and Friendship. MilkBoy Philly, 1200 Chestnut St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kaufman

Residuels EP Release Show at Bourbon & Branch April 22

Posted on:

Raunchy, raw rippers with a primal howl, Residuels sweat rock ‘n’ roll. Celebrating their latest EP Love Songs via Suicide Bong Tapes, before heading off on a West Coast tour with the Buzzcocks, the power trio unearths an unbending energetic stomp that never goes away because it hits the core. That unfiltered take-it-as-it-is expression tears through all types of terrain – quickly, nastily and unflinchingly. The searching, heady post-punk of Throbbing Chakra helps set the table, stirring up the floating aspects of one’s mind, while the sticky dark synth of Remote Control gets things started. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Tunji Ige Coolly Delivers at Underground Arts April 21

Posted on:

As part of tonight’s Red Bull Sound Select/JUMP Philly-curated billing at Underground Arts, local talent Tunji Ige is slated to hit the stage. With his recently released EP Missed Calls, Ige continues to impress. While smooth-sounding vocal augmentations and futuristic beats are front and center, dictating the energetic jams that are flex-fitting to one’s ears and body, there’s a smooth electro-dance sensation that’s backed by concise storytelling. It’s silky, tightly-compacted musicality that coolly delivers the message. Tunji Ige will also be joined by Moosh & Twist, Loaf Muzik, and Michael Christmas. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $10/$3 (w/RSVP), 21+ – Michael Colavita
