Weekend Warrior, July 15 – 17

Posted on:
The joyous jangle-pop of four-piece Literature is part of a stacked billing at PhilaMOCA this Saturday. The band’s tightly compacted tunes invite you to let loose, smoothly surfing through your ears in an exuberantly catchy bounce. Their brand of indie-pop cruises in a stable, on-the-move, percussive nature as chilled waves of drifting vocal harmony balance the rush of adrenaline-laced instrumentation tempering the fervor. The confessional, melodic power pop of Hurry nonchalantly opens up lyrically, while demonstrating force in fortuitous flashes. With the simplicity of detailed yet semi-whispered, revealing, personal narratives that burst in exuberant moments, Free Cake For Every Creature’s open-book songs bring one in close while carrying a poignant energy. Weaving bits of post-punk, noise, and shoegaze together, Baltimore quintet Wildhoney, who are part of a upcoming 4-way split EP, Continental Drift, which also features Mercury Girls, complete this R5 booking. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

The Rivals Reunite at Boot & Saddle July 15

Posted on:

Tonight at Boot and Saddle is a full lineup of Philadelphia artists who find their strength in nostalgia. The Rivals will reunite for one evening, and bring their brooding, psychedelic rock, with influences ranging from The Doors to The Black Keys. The moody harmonies and intricate guitars are what drive the tunes forward. The band is returning to the scene for this show, so expect some serious solos and a whole lot of energy from a group that has been dormant for a bit. Also performing is the high energy acoustic rock of Bryant Eugene Vasquez, who is part Lou Reed and part Modest Mouse. The California native has been in Philly for the past 2 years, and the ups and downs of moving to our humble city resulted in his most recent effort All Damn Day/ The Greatest Hits. Both artists are opening for classic rock outfit Song Dogs in what will be a great night in South Philly filled with good friends and tunes. Boot & Saddle, 1131 Broad St., $12, 8pm, 21+ – Adam G.

My Son Bison Opening for City of the Sun at Boot & Saddle July 14

Posted on:

As we await the arrival of their new full-length Two Faces and a Vase later this summer, My Son Bison rolls into Boot & Saddle this evening. The band merges the comforting familiarity of folk with intricate baroque developments. That common starting point, with whimsical levels of instrumentation, provide an adventurous experimental bridge in which diving into the depths exposes illumination rather than the weight of carrying additional musical baggage. Tonight, they set the stage for New York-based trio City of the Sun, who embark on acoustic-based journeys, pulling listeners into a whirlwind whose origins are as diverse as the path they forge. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $10, 21 + – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Hot Tone” – The Whips

Posted on:

The Whips tear it up with impassioned guitarwork on their latest single, "Hot Tone" (which was probably what was uttered when they finished the initial jam). The track is set to appear on an exclusive tape compilation in August via Suicide Bong Tapes. You can catch The Whips tomorrow night at Kung Fu Necktie opening for Night Beats and The Mystery Lights.

New Videos: Red Room Series – Mitch Esparza

Posted on:

Ingenuity and sonic manipulation are evident in Mitch Esparza’s trio of videos, recorded at Sleepless Sound Studio for their Red Room Sessions. “GiraSol/Guitarra Inerane” incorporates a haunting beauty with a volatile edge and a wandering elegance. “You Shouldn’t Do That/You Shouldn’t Find Me” comes at you with its non-stop fury, while the layered effects of “Disappointing Muse” offer a glimpse into the process of sonic interplay in melding pieces to create a smooth sonic quilt. Kodiak Park Got That Rock ‘n’ Soul Thang at KFN July 13

Posted on:

Kodiak Park has got that rock ‘n’ soul thang goin’ on. In the group’s debut singles, you’ll hear a band building on a sound that could bring them to larger rooms. With frontman Jon Panasak’s charismatic vocals and a suave-sounding backing unit, Kodiak Park is hinting that radio-friendly psych-pop is alive and well in Philly. They’ve already teased that a new single, "Holy Ghost," will be unveiled this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. You’ll also find Miami’s Heavy Drag (who I definitely am feelin’), Brooklyn’s Such Hounds, and Philly’s own R.R. Perkins in the mix. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, +21 – H.M. Kauffman

New Blue Smiley Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Blue Smiley is back with their new release Return! The record calmly rushes with its energetic yet soothing mesh. The buoyant tones are counteracted with a tendency to surge forward in a dose of mind-altering, hard fuzz. That combination of cruising and crushing keeps one on constant alert. Get an Immediate Shot of Adrenaline w/Cheerbleeders at Bourbon & Branch July 12

Posted on:

Sweet snarling vocals with a instrumental aggression that won’t ease up or back down, Cheerbleeders bring an immediate shot of adrenaline to Bourbon & Branch tonight. Unforgiving guitar shreds bulldoze the area ahead in attacking flashes, and the vocals explode in unfiltered expressions. Barriers stand little chance when the speed and force team up, rocking you into submission. Minnesota’s Jack and the Coax serve up a seductive concoction of bluesy Americana. The raunchy, retro rumble of The Up! Up! Ups! and the smooth-talking riff-fueled rock of Wild Joy wrap this billing. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 7pm, $7, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Year Of Glad EP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Year Of Glad just premiered their new EP I Don’t Know Where I Am Either at Brooklyn Vegan. On the follow-up to the band’s self-titled debut album, the group seems to be finding its pocket as Mimi Gallagher (Nona) and Chris Diehm (Thin Lips, 1994!), demonstrating a matured balance as they casually take turns on vocals. The four-song EP, which also includes a duet cover of Pearl Jam’s "Corduroy," officially comes out this Friday, July 15 via Lame-O Records.
