Deer Scout celebrates the tape release of Customs (Fox Food Records) with a show this evening at PhilaMOCA. Dena Miller’s bedroom-folk narratives are depicted through a keenly observational perspective. Those unencumbered recollections place one inside personal memories. At times, she appears to be addressing the listener, while at others, she’s recalling and exploring internal contemplations, flipping the microscope on herself. Enthralling literary lyricism meets the strength and sincerity of vocal delivery, navigating on closely knit intrepid daydream-folk instrumentation, Kississippi grabs one’s attention, refusing to let go. The instantly invigorating power-pop of Brooklyn’s Fits and the synth-infused bedroom-pop of Boosegumps round out this lineup. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Whether they’re playfully performing beside or behind the house whilst consuming pizza or awkwardly dancing on the porch after a few brewskis, Whaler’s video for for their single, “Deep End,” captures a day fun in what looks to be West Philly. Weaving in bits of animation, director Jess Hock emphasizes the dance-generating, ebb & flow of the friendly-feeling rocker. You can take in the joyous sounds of the four-piece tomorrow night at Creep Records with The Mellowells, Ganou, and Dirty Jim.

Wive, the latest release from Wives, smolders with an uninhibited confessional monologue meets a foreboding thunderous musicality. Those raw exposed emotive vocals gather steam against the consistent grunge/noise attack, in essence flipping that fragile sense of openness into a feeling of power. The relentless surge is the natural shot of adrenaline one could use midweek.

While splitting and sharing vocal duties, Bobbie Parker and Ian Bennett of Radiant Life Perspective unite in a compounding beautiful manner. On their latest release Little Things, the duo navigates through an assortment of sounds. While some songs tug on a delicately expressive folk chord, others dash out with an energetic percussive flair, bouncing along to loose acoustic guitar and soothing keys. It’s refreshingly optimistic, in a vibrant open-air melody.

Modern Inventors has released a new track, called “Closer”. Enlisting the percussive services of Jack White’s Daru Jones, the song takes drums-meets-keys-and-bass groove, and spins it out in a free-floating psych manner. As the hypnotically smooth vocals coast on a pillow, a lingering exterior buzz hangs in the periphery. This electro-soul/R&B offers a loose, gripping, exploratory side that you’ll want to ride for a while.

Zack Robbins (Superheaven) and Josh Mackie (Idiot Forever) have teamed up to form DARK MTNS. Their new self-titled release has a somewhat relaxed sonic demeanor, largely allowing the vocals to take the soothing, melodic lead. However, an underlying cosmic curvature can be felt.

Eric Slick has always held things down on the skins for bands like Dr. Dog, Nightlands, Norwegian Arms, and The Adrian Belew Trio. And with Lithuania, he has certainly been building his comfort level and experience, enjoying the warmth of lights from the front of the stage. Slick recently dropped a new solo track called, "No," a tasty, pop morsel of disenchantment that’s off his upcoming album, Palisades. Tonight, he’ll be opening for avant-rock Asheville, NC duo Ahleuchatistas and Mary Lattimore at Johnny Brenda’s. Also along for the odd, sonic adventure is Shimmer. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Zooming in from a universal perspective down to ground level, Jon Lewis creates a simple yet telling animated narrative in the video for Former Belle‘s “A Beautiful One”. The track is featured on Foreign Bed, which was released earlier this year via Randm Records. The stop-motion images that unfold carry a natural, nostalgic air as Bruno Catrambone (CRUISR) spends quality time in nature with his dog. However, that meteor at the start of the visual excursion provides for an explosive twist at the conclusion.

Void Vision contributed a remix to Technophobia’s 12" "Negative Space" single via Working Order Records. 100% of proceeds will be going to Life Pieces To Masterpieces, "a safe sanctuary for hundreds of African American young men and boys growing up in Washington, DC’s most poverty-stricken and volatile neighborhoods." The quaking percussion and ominous stir of synth aid in empowering the vocals, while creating a danceable track.
