The Deli Philly’s October Record of the Month: The Past, The Future, Dwelling there like space – Ghost Gum

Posted on:
The timing of Ghost Gum’s debut feels cosmically divine. Released on the heels of the autumnal equinox, their shoegaze adjacent LP is the perfect salve to remedy the pain of summer’s end.

Awash in dreamy reverb and heartfelt lyricism, The Past, The Future, Dwelling there like space opens with the melodic urgency of the ironically titled “2nd Song”. Buzzing chords and crashing cymbals collide with clips of conversation and a memorable chorus reminiscent of The Anniversary’s “D is For Detroit,” with each element of the track instantly sinking deep into the psyche of its listener. The steady drums and swirling crash of guitar throughout “Edible Complex” perfectly preface the brief yet atmospheric “Interlude,” before easing into the intimately contemplative swell of “Home”. A plausible portrait of familiarity, whether it be a person or a place, “Home” tugs unabashedly at the heartstrings, and will undoubtedly leave you weak in the knees.

“Mercury,” which lies near the midpoint of the album, has a similar impact on its audience, rendering fans nostalgic for Black Tambourine’s “By Tomorrow” or Bleeding Rainbow’s “Euphoria”. Soon after the song ends, “More” unfolds, and quickly progresses into an audibly lush meditation on uncertainty and the existential need for meaning, a theme that carries over to “Repeater,” an unshakably gripping anthem that explores the frustration of detrimental cycles – emotive and relational alike.

“You Were You,” the final track on Ghost Gum’s first official release, culminates in a self-reflective fashion, haunting yet beautiful. As distorted laughter fades into fuzzed-out guitar, The Past, The Future, Dwelling there like space rings true until the very end.Dianca London

New Tombo Crush LP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:
Plumbing the darkness and the grain of DIY recording sonics, Tombo Crush manage to fuse their guitar work and aching vocals into surprisingly revealing songs. There is something very alluring about the project’s latest full-length album, Ant Farm, that begs for further listening, as well as a quirkiness that winks for you to not take it all so seriously. Tombo Crush are in their own vein, and are perfectly content there.

Allison Crutchfield and the Fizz Step Up to the Plate at Everybody Hits Oct. 1

Posted on:

Allison Crutchfield’s vast musical output has been felt as a part of (the recently reunited) P.S. Eliot and the fierce, gritty, enthusiastic Swearin’ as well as Waxahatchee. Tonight, Crutchfield and her backing band the Fizz step up to the plate at Everybody Hits. Slated to release a yet-to-be-named album – courtesy of Merge Records early next year, she can sit back, allowing the lyrical honesty take the lead among a pensive percussive backdrop or conversely rear back as a heavier fast-paced tenacity rushes forward. Crutchfield and her bandmates will also be joined by the combustible psych-grunge merging of The Spirit of the Beehive and the melodic snarl of pop-punk trio Eight to get the festivities rolling. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, September 30 – October 2

Posted on:
Delicate is a concise characterization of the new album from Hello Shark, a.k.a. Linc Halloran. Officially released today via Chicago’s Orindal Records, the album plays like an unhinged door into Halloran’s head. Lyrically keen observations, anecdotes, and imagery paint an autumnal exposure as the songs mimic the soon-to-be sparsely-adorned trees. One gravitates toward the uninhibited exposure reminiscent to Pavement and Bright Eyes, as that relatable, melodic sense of melancholy aches with honesty and shivers with warmth. Encoding the fresh breath of catharsis with dense yet airy pockets of samples and instrumentation, Power Animal, a.k.a. Keith Hampson, captivates, while the enchanting, low-key serenade of Seattle’s Mega Bog and the bright but turbulent tones of Baltimore’s Amanda Glasser complete this billing. New Music Video: “Moonshine” – Dirty Dollhouse

Posted on:

We already knew that Dirty Dollhouse could hit them high notes. However, with singer-songwriter Chelsea Mitchell’s latest single, "Moonshine," you can feel how low the depths of her music can get. It’s the first offering from her upcoming album Vinyl Child, which was co-produced by Brian Dale Allen Strouse (of The Lawsuits) and is a departure from the previous 25 Shades. The track is also accompanied by a daydreamy music video, directed by Bob Sweeney. You can catch Dirty Dollhouse performing live next Thursday, October 6 at Bourbon & Branch in support of Dylan Jane‘s EP release show.

Pinkwash Plays Host to Slow Mass at Everybody Hits Sept. 30

Posted on:

Situated along the western edge of Northern Liberties on Girard is batting cage and DIY venue Everybody Hits, who this week will be hosting a stacked set headed by Philly’s own Pinkwash.  The duo of Joey Doubek and Ashley Arnwine churns out intensely gripping tunes that are as swift as they are leaden, captivating a wide array of attention in the music community, while finding homes for their releases on labels Sister Polygon and Don Giovanni Records. The band’s name is derived from the term "pinkwashing," which refers to the often unregulated practice of companies aligning their products and brands with cancer awareness and LGBTQ movements without necessarily contributing to those causes. Pinkwash will be joined by fellow Philadelphians Lithuania and Loose Tooth, as well as Chicago-based musical outlet Slow Mass. Slow Mass are currently on tour in support of their new EP Treasure Pains, released earlier this month via Landland. They draw sonic inspiration from associated acts Into It. Over It., My Dad and Former Thieves, while distinguishing their new project as an exciting endeavor with plenty of potential for new material. Everybody Hits, 527 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $8, All Ages – Josh Kelly

Nicklas Hughes Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Sept. 29

Posted on:

Nicklas Hughes celebrates the release of his sophomore album, Games (due out tomorrow via Black Rd Records), with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle. Hughes enlists an emotion-exposing, singer-songwriter accessibility. However, those somber tales are hardened by the influx of multidimensional synth/pop-rock-toned instrumentation. That on-the-move feeling places the songs in the present tense as the listener lives them in the moment, while still carrying an emotive depth. Joining in on the celebration are the continuously-searching, electro-folk quartet of Upperfields and the engaging serene vocal synth combination of Natalie Wimberg and Marc Neibauer, a.k.a. My Home is the Sea. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Let Me Get There” (Feat. Kurt Vile) – Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions

Posted on:

A captivating intimacy silhouetted by a hypnotic surf/dream-pop groove, “Let Me Get There,” the new single from Mazzy Star singer Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions, is a song whose subtle intricacies stick. The track, which also features Kurt Vile, plays off the relaxed, heart-warming vocal duet/conversation as delicate keys and the light yet firm grasp of the twisting backend meet with warm stretches of guitar, hitting against the shore. The single is featured on the forthcoming album Until the Hunter, which will be released on November 4 via Tendril Tales.
