Debut Smallhands LP Available for Streaming & Download

Somewhere between a disintegration of ambiance and driven post-rock, Fredericksburg, Virginia’s Smallhands produce music that is as sonically dynamic as it is immersive. The group consists of Winston Givler, Kyle Guerra, and Austin O’Rourke, whose collective effort will be making its way to cassette via Tape Modulator as their debut album, How To Say Goodbye. The record is a ground-up, DIY effort, with the songs mixed and mastered by O’Rourke – and it is worth noting that he was the recipient of the 2015 Gold ASCAP Morton Young Composer Award. Rip Into the Stratosphere w/Space Pizza at Ortlieb’s Oct. 20

Posted on:

Loose comfort with a tendency to reach out there in a playful/powerful flex of intensity, that’s what Space Pizza tastes like in your ears. Instinctive, velcro-jangling rock with lyrics that often drop pretense in accordance with embracing the joy; the music instantly adheres in a casual, memorable manner. However, the quartet’s lighthearted aesthetic doesn’t come at the expense of instrumentation, as somewhat goofy lyrical snippets are escalated by ability to lockdown into a deep instrumental groove and rip into the stratosphere. Tonight, they’re paired with the wandering-folk stoner exploits of Sam Perduta (of Elison Jackson). While a pair of Brooklyn bands in the countrified-cosmic jams of Morning Martyrs and the rollin’ & rumblin’ folk rock of The Ferdy Mayne stitch this showcase at Ortlieb’s together. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. 3rd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Hezekiah Jones EP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The musical troupe of Hezekiah Jones, led by Raph Cutrufello, has released a new collection of tunes. The EP Har! Har! Har! is partitioned into three tracks, “Yeshe & Horus,” “Between a Sea & a Soft Place,” and “Sylvia North”. The triad of songs is saturated in the seductive lure of vocal harmonies, while a wandering synth lingers in the background. It’s inherently inviting as it teeters in a mystical realm. There will also be five extra covers hidden on the band’s upcoming CD release. Hezekiah Jones is scheduled to join Mason Porter and The End of America on Saturday, December 10 at Ardmore Music Hall. Cheap Dinosaurs Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Oct. 18

Posted on:

Today, the psych/prog crew of Cheap Dinosaurs unveiled their new album, High Strangeness, and tonight, the quartet creeps into South Philly’s Boot & Saddle. The band latest release navigates through a fantastical deep-forest, video-game resonating labyrinth. The pulsating beats ascribed to the combination of heavy yet precise backend-led trails and mysterious synths drive the quest toward its ultimate destination. The optimistic comfort of familiar terrain is temporarily shaken as ominous quaking tones enclose, while one proceeds deeper into the dimly lit terrain. They’ll bridge the gap between the pronounced, punk stomping of Tiny Vices and the intricately explosive, primal, post-hardcore surges of Georgia’s Cinemechanica, whom released a new self-titled album late last month. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
