RX opens for Tricky at Brooklyn Bowl on 12.10

Posted on:

Tricky’s been dubbing up your shoegaze since he launched from Massive Attack in the 90s. This Friday night before he floods the lanes of Brooklyn Bowl with his signature dense trip-hop, a new taste of the dubstep movement will warm up the subwoofers; Rx hails from Philly, but his records and remixes are receiving heavy rotation across the U.S. and in Europe. Remixes of JupiterOne, A Place To Bury Strangers and French Horn Rebellion are top selects, but his own music is potent enough to flood your brain with endorphins. If your in need of a dose of sweaty dancefloor mayhem, you’ll want to pop on over to Brooklyn Bowl this Friday. Rx goes on at 8, not recommended on an empty stomach. – BrokeMC

The Babies announce album for 2011 + West coast tour

Posted on:

The Babies if the band of Kevin Morby – who plays bass in Woods, and Cassie Ramone, who lays guitar in Vivian Girls and – as far as we know – is not related to any of the Ramones, although it would be extremely cool if she was. Justin Sullivan, who had played with Cassie in Bossy, joined the duo on drums, and the Babies debuted in March 2009 as a three-piece at Dead Herring, their friendsʼ loft in Brooklyn. Rough, chilled and slightly out of tune as you would expect them to be, The Babies’ songs will see their first full length release in 2011 on Shrimper Records. The band will also tour the West Coast in January, where theyʼre temporarily relocating for the winter to write their second record, before going to Europe in the spring of 2011.

Parts & Labor to release new album on Jagjaguar in 2011

Posted on:

Jagjaguwar announced yesterday the forthcoming release of Constant Future, the fifth full-length album by Brooklyn’s Parts & Labor, available in the U.S. on March 8 and in the U.K. on March 7. The band, featured on the cover of the 11th NYC issue of The Deli back in 2007 (side picture) can be called a sui generis totem of modern art-punk. Their last release, 2008’s Receivers, saw Parts & Labor blasting off in all directions and creating collage art from hundreds of fan-curated samples. The new album, co-produced by Dave Friedman of Flaming Lips’ fame in his Tarbox Road Studios in Casadega, NY, promises to be one of the sonic events of 2011.
Parts & Labor also took part in a recent fundraiser for The Voice Project organization which raises money to support the peace movement in Uganda. As part of the fundraiser Parts & Labor performed a cover of No Age’s "Life Prowler" from their new album Everything in Between.

Cute little lo-fi video from Seequill – live at Littlefield, on 12.12

Posted on:

Pysch rock quartet Seequill release new lo-fi music video for their track "Rest For Now". In typical Seequill style the video was shot on the day of a full moon and during a blizzard. A band full of sonic surprises, ethereal atmospheres, crunchy distorted beats, sudden reggae-ish breaks, zappian guitar solos, weird samples and loops coexist in a unique hodgepodge of music influences. They play this Sunday December 12th at Littlefield in Brooklyn with Birds & Batteries from San Francisco, Tallest Trees from Nashville, and locals Elastic Summer. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Future Islands Go to the Movies…

Posted on:

What do Baltimore’s Future Islands have in common with Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Costner, and Ben Affleck? The film The Company Men, where the Future Islands have some heavily featured tracks! It’ll be released nationally in theaters on Jan. 21 (though press release had stated Dec. 10), so keep your ears alert if you catch the film.

Future Islands have recently wrapped up a marathon year of touring on top of a hefty release schedule.  One full-length, an EP, and two singles later, the band is taking a brief break this holiday season to relax and start working on next year’s forthcoming LP.  Expect the band to hit the road again in February!

Best of Los Angeles 2010 for emerging bands – Submit via Sonicbids

Posted on:

Deli-rious readership,

We gave bands a week to apply for free to our Year End Best of LA 2010 Poll, but submissions aren’t closed – we are now still accepting them until 12.31 HERE, through SonicBids, with a $5 submission fee. It’s the first time we charge musicians for anything, but these polls take so much of our time that we needed to find a way to offset some of the personal effort we put in them, we hope you understand.

The Deli’s Polls’ mission is to highlight the best local bands that emerged in 2010 in the 10 scenes we cover – the full list of cities we cover can be found here.

Our polling system (based on the votes of a local jury of scene makers and partially on our readers vote) has rewarded in the past artists like Local Natives, Yeasayer, Girls, Chairlift, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Freelance Whales, Sleigh Bells and Neon Indian (among others) before they hit it big.

The summary of last year’s polls (each city’s top 3 + readers poll winner) can be found here. A full explanation of the polling system can be found here.

We hope you’ll submit your music, because the more bands submit, the more accurate our poll is – we will consider any band!

Good luck, and… we swear that we will listen to your music!

CD of the Month: Lia Ices, “Grown Unknown”

Posted on:

Lia Ices‘ "Grown Unknown" reminds us that you don’t really need weird samples or odd time signatures or a knack for bizarre song structure to make great, unique music. What you really need is stellar songwriting, confidence, character, a great voice, and a scary amount of talent. The uniqueness of the sound will come naturally.
With the help of a piano and a few other traditional instruments, Lia Ices manages to create music that stops time, pierces the veil of Maya of our daily all-absorbing routine, and gets us to listen, and I would go as far as saying to enjoy, and reconnect to, the sad hemisphere of our emotions. In a world that seems to function in synch with up-tempo pop hits, this music could represent the only true rebellion we have left.
Don’t miss Lia Ices’ show at Mercury Lounge on 12.14. The album will be released in January on Jagjaguar. The video below is from a song featured in Lia’s 2008 debut album "Necima"
