August Album of the Month: The Chance “New York City Girls”

Posted on:

At last, one of the most anticipated releases that we’ve been waiting for is finally here!!! And holy hell was it worth the wait. DC’s dark rockers, The Chance, are releasing their 6 track EP New York City Girls on Aug 24th, and we’ve got an advance copy and are very very stoked to share our thoughts on this album we’ve been hearing about since late 2010. As a duo, guitarist/singer Joshua Padgett (bass on album as well) and drummer Viraj DeSilva worked in NYC with famed producer Chuck Brody (Phantogram, Yoko Ono) and mastered by Sarah Register (Sonic Youth, David Bowie) to create what is one of the best indie rock EPs of the year.

Kicking off the record is the dance anthem and first single "The Abyss of Love" recently heard at a 9:30 Club DJ session (word!) that easily gets your ass off the bar stool. (You can hear it below.) The first jolt of drums has an 80’s "kick your feet now!" flair before a tinge of high guitar notes float in causing an instant bob of the head. Before you know it, your eyes are closed and your doing the ‘Molly Ringwald ala Breakfast Club’ while Padgett chants "Can our souls blend for all time? I need you, to save me from myself. Hold me close." A new movement of dark dance rock is sure to emerge based on this track alone. And it sets the pace for the rest of the stellar EP.

Next is the title track "New York City Girls" which is about chicks living the dream in said city. It’s their poppiest track to date that seems ready for airplay on the soundtrack to Gossip Girl, or something equally awesome. Padgett reaches new heights of falsetto impressively before delving into that clean Ian Curtis roar he has been compared to in the past. The guitars swirl in layered loops of lush while DeSilva brings you back to reality with bursts of cymbals.

Every track has its own edge that induce the need to listen over and over again. "Forever" gets intense with layered guitars, "Into the Night" features a chorus in Spanish, and the ballad "Lapdance in Heaven" has a creepy edge of Suicide-like percussion echoes. Padgett sings a depressing tale about a lonely man in pergatory with the faint memory of obsessive love for a stripper before bursting into the guitar solo of the century that is up there with C.C. DeVille baby! And closing out the record is another smash of dark dance rock with a fast paced/steady beat and impressive guitar licks in "You Are My Dream" which ultimately makes us want more, dammit! LP LP LP!!!

The recording duo will be in full band mode including Christian Baldo on bass and Steve Scarlata on guitar for the official CD release party. Be sure to get your ass to the Black Cat on Wednesday August 24th where they will be joined by the spectacular Janel and Anthony. $10 8 PM. And now, … the abyss of love!!! -Dawn The Abyss of Love by The Chance (DC)

NYC CD Submission roundup: Paul Jefferson, Elephant Goes West, Conveyor

Posted on:

Here at The Deli NYC we receive hundreds of CD submissions per month through this link. Here are some highlights from the latest batch.

Red headed songwriter Paul Jefferson (picture above), who recently released the two song single "Comrades", plays intriguing, dreamy alt folk that will please fans of Grizzly Bear and Beach House. The single is well produced, and Paul’s vocals have a fragile and appealing quality.

NJ based Elephant Goes West specialize in melodic rootsy pop with some circus-y influences reminiscent of The Beatles from their late 60s period. This is the kind of music you may want to listen to during recession times: good, melodic songs with fun arrangements. These guys have two upcoming shows in NYC, see here for dates.

Pictureless Brooklyn band Conveyor, who will be celebrating the CD release of the "Sun Ray" EP at Pianos on September 2, mixes all sorts of melodic psych rock influences from Grandaddy to Flaming Lips and Waters-era Pink Floyd, adding a personal intimate element to it. The result is a sleepingly pleasing psychedelia with electronic and math accents.

Zambri signs to Kanine Records + plays SummerScreen @ McCarren Park

Posted on:

NYC’s dual art-pop sisterhood Zambri just announced that they signed to Kanine Records. These young ladies have been working on this for quite some time – I personally met them in 2003 (I think), when they were talented teens looking for a producer – that’s what my job was at the time. Their signing to one of the most successful new NYC indie labels is a testament to how far you can go when you have talent and determination – and also to how long that may take. For a first introduction into the world of Cristi Jo & Jessica Zambri, Kanine Records will be releasing Zambri’s debut EP Glossolalia on November 8, 2011. You can see them live at Glasslands on August 18th and at SummerScreen @ McCarren Park on August 24.

Co La Debut New Video

Posted on:

Baltimore’s answer to dub pop soul with a tropical edge is absolutely Co La, and this week they’ve debuted another glorious track, "Blanketing Marrakesh", paired with a hallucinatory collage of warped images. It’s part of their series called "Fugitive of Leisure" which you can check out on Soundcloud now.

Here are some sweet words from fellow Baltimorean, Ken Seeno of Ponytail, on Co La, "This is the music that I want to wake up to every morning while a Rube Goldberg Contraption pours fresh coffee and makes hot waffles. For me, Co La embodies the memory of coasting through a dry Mexican town with the windows open, shirt sleeves rolled up, drinking a Coke out of a glass bottle, and soaking in the vivid hues of color. Co La is the passport from Spring to Summer. Crisp, Heady, Co La."

Thee Midnight Creep

Posted on:

Have you heard of or seen this guy?  Bill Campbell is Thee Midnight Creep, and underneath the patina of eerie/gothic music that his image belies, are well crafted, thoughtful lyrics and a deep nostalgic croon for a voice.  Nick Cave meets Castanets- that’s Thee Midnight Creep.  Usually, here on The Deli, we post about an upcoming event, or an album about to be released, but damn it, I can’t find any "news" item to post for this fellow other than I think he is magnificent and you should listen to him on his myspace, or see him live, or buy his album (does he have an album out?)!  If you have more information on this one-man-band, please comment.  His myspace info, which serves as an example of his ambiguousness, is below:

Bio: southern ex-patriot
Members: a Martin, a Guild and an Auto-harp
Influences:
Sounds Like: hollerin’ into a well

Weird Owl release “Build Your Beast A Fire” – show at Union Pool on 08.08

Posted on:

You can’t really say that Brooklyn Psych-Rockers Weird Owl "are not what they seem". Yes because their Lynchian name perfectly describes the kind of music they play, i.e. dreamy weirdness which would be the perfect soundtrack for a movie by… David Lynch! The band has just released its sophomore album "Build Your Beast A Fire" on Tee Pee Records – the release show is tonight at Brooklyn’s Union Pool. Here’s the brand new video for the track "Skin the Dawn".

Emil & Friends announce full length out in October.

Posted on:

Emil & Friends consists of Emil Hewitt and his friends: the killer bassline and his “mixologist” brain. Plus a rotating team of musicians of course… In what he describes as “weird pop,” he creates a version of combined disco and indie pop that doesn’t always travel in a straight line, but can still keep you moving with it. He just announced a that the upcoming LP “Lo & Behold” will be released in October, but you should stop by for his year-old baby EP available for stream here. Here’s a video from last year’s record. – Caitlin Clive

Show review: The Click Clack Boom at Pianos on 08.04

Posted on:

Thursday night at the Lower East Side hotspot, Pianos, was filled to the gills with a rowdy audience anticipating an even more energetic band, The Click Clack Boom. The trio combines New Wave vocals, throwback rock cadences, dancey grooves, and punk paces, pushed forward by spastic outbursts and animated stage presence. Mostly unreleased material, set list selections included frantic and grungy “10:24,” counter-intuitively upbeat “Cryptic Condition,” echoing and impassioned “Tow the Line,” calypso-inspired “ZKBK, freewheeling rock track, “Ghosts” from the band’s debut album, “Howling,” brand new “Plastic Dolls,” and ominous, bassy closer, “Lighter.” The Click Clack Boom’s quirky, crowd-pleasing, and zealous demeanor, and fashionably disheveled appearance epitomize the characteristics of Brooklynite artists, reaffirming their recognizable and well-earned upswing as a prime NYC band. – Meijin Bruttomesso
