Interview with Matt Pless: DC Deli’s Artist of the Month (December)

Posted on:

Armed with an acoustic guitar, harmonica, and lyrics spit like hot fire, Baltimore based Matt Pless has brought his own brand of folk punk across the nation. His homebase of fans expressed their love and pushed him to the top of our last poll, crowning him Artist of the Month. We wanted to find out more about this fellow with a background in punk, who put out an LP of acoustic pieces a couple months ago (check it out below,) and also pens for the project Kotterpin. Here he talks about Plan It X Records, the family biz, and Guts references. Now onto the interview…

Noosa lands single on Hypem Top Tracks of 2012 List

Posted on:

The Brooklyn pop duo Noosa (Sky Barbarick and the invisible Matt Buszko) doesn’t seem to ever play live, but this is not preventing them from generating a lot of interest – ah, the power of good music! Their recent single "Walk On By" (Sound Remedy Remix, streaming below) made it onto Hype Machine’s top tracks of 2012 list. The single (a ballad in the original version found here) is a sweetly sad song, where wholly feeling lyrics cut deep with Sky’s ethereal voice. And oh, that voice. It’s Regina Spektor-esque, in that it can be fluttery and throaty at the same time. It’s the perfect grounding component to Noosa’s gorgeous sweeping dream pop. – Corinne Bagish

A crazy diamond from the NYC underground: Hairy Sands

Posted on:

Like a cross somewhere between Can’s krautrock and Zappa’s theatrics, Hairy Sands exists for those who would like to mix their partying with true aesthetic exploration. These are not simple tracks to decipher, but the band’s sonic vision is so large, you’ll have plenty of areas to explore while trying to find the path. This is a group that meets and records whole albumss years apart, but something must be in the water where they do their thing, as their latest full-length ‘Sandy Hairs’ has the ambition of bands with way more time on their hands. Listen and download on their Facebook. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Songwriter Jamie Bendell plays Rockwood on 12.20 + releases “Blue Sky Days” in January

Posted on:

Yet another album to check out this coming new year is singer-songwriter Jamie Bendell’s “Blue Sky Days,” due for release January 29th. Bendell’s pure soprano vocals are accompanied by uplifting melodies and diverse instrumentation including guitars, pianos, organs, violins and even an accordion. This playful music along with Bendell’s voice are what drive her emotionally charged lyrics, and make this a very engaging take on folk pop. Bendell will be playing at Rockwood Music Hall tomorrow, December 20th, , where she will be debuting new songs off “Blue Sky Days.” -Lucy Sherman

Bad Books return with sophomore album “II” + announce tour

Posted on:

Bad Books, an indie rock collaboration between Brooklyn’s Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull, are hitting the road on an east coast tour to promote their sophomore album "II." Devine and Hull alternate in songwriting and lead vocals, giving this album a dynamic edge in pace, voice, and mood. Their lead-off single "Forest Whitaker" (streaming below) starts with a catchy whistling intro that leads to an uplifting pop melody that contrasts uniquely with Hull’s dark lyrics. The band is starting their tour in Thompson House Newport, KY on February 13th and making their way east, swinging by New York City to play the Bowery Ballroom on February 20th before making their way south. – Lucy Sherman

NYC Gospel for your holidays – The Lone Bellow

Posted on:

No matter how cynical a bastard you may be, every once in awhile a little Gospel charm is good for the soul. And for those moments, you needn’t look further than the country-fried soul of The Lone Bellow. Whether it’s the altar call of ‘You Never Need Nobody’ (check out the video streaming below) or the hollow shouts in ‘Two Sides Of Lonely,’ (or even a free download of their new Christmas jam, ‘A Little Christmas Cheer’) the Brooklyn-based trio plugs into an old tradition of Folk Americana, and brings it to life in a way that should help keep you warm this winter. The debut drops this January 22nd off Descendant Records. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Interview with Norman Rockwell: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (December)

Posted on:

They came together through the open mic scene of Northern Virginia and in no time whipped together a style to call their own- rockfolk. They are Norman Rockwell, winner of one of our recent polls, and the fans came out in numbers to push them to the top. With their debut album Fare Thee Well just released and the spirit of Sean Meyers living on with them, Joshua Johnston (Guitar/Harmonica/Vox,) Ben Hirsch (Guitar/Banjo/Mandolin/Violin/Vox,) and Nathan Read (Drums/Percussion/Vox) have 2013 in the bag. Here, they tell us about an upcoming DVD, lunch break inspiration, and more. Now onto the interview…

The Indecent releases video, plays Shea Stadium on 01.05

Posted on:

Not much to write about before the holidays, so we’ll indulge in a band that’s definitely neither "indie" (they are signed to Warner) nor emerging (at least according to our standards), but extremely young and relatively new to the scene. NYC and Canada based The Indecent plays what could be called nu-grunge, but they do it without looking out of date or derivative. And they are so friggin’ young it’s almost scary. Check out below their new video for the single "Control." They’ll be playing Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on January 5 – it will be a packed show. If you are in NJ, they’ll be there at The Stanhope House on December 29.
