Paperwhite returns from SXSW to play Baby’s All Right tonight (03.25)

Posted on:

It’s getting there folks, our patience will soon be rewarded by a sun that’s actually warm and a breeze that’s actually enjoyable! OK, we aren’t there quite yet, but we’ll all have an opportunity to actually experience these summery feelings at Paperwhite‘s show tonight at Baby’s All Right. Sister and brother Katie and Ben Marshall (recently featured on Spin as one of the 22 bands to see at SXSW) create electronic pop that has the power to "emanate" summer (or something). Not the unbearably sticky NYC one by the way, but the sublime summers we remember as half dreams from our teen years. Play this, or single "Magic" (streaming below) and you’ll realize what we are talking about. Tonight they’ll be playing the Indie Shuffle showcase, sharing the stage with Maxo, Moon Bounce and Novelty Daughter.

Cultfever opens for Mansionair at Baby’s All Right tonight

Posted on:

From their recorded material you may think of Brooklyn’s Cultfever as an electronic project, but the duo’s live sound is a lot more electric and "indie" sounding. The group released single "Gloria" (streaming) at the end of 2014 and will be performing tonight at Baby’s All Right (after a show at Mercury Lounge last night) supporting newest Glassnote signing Mansionair.

Balancer unveils single “Waves Remain” from upcoming EP

Posted on:

If you feel like closing your eyes and escaping this never-ending cold, Brooklyn-via Colombia/Puerto Rico trio Balancer have got you covered, with their new single, titled “Waves Remain,” off their forthcoming EP. The track contains enough island dreaminess in the guitar reverb (and occasional tasteful tremolo) and moveable bop in the drums that it acts as a listening vacation. With its alternatively progressing and regressing rhythm, seamlessly flowing from a relatively weighty chorus into an upbeat pop-interlude, this track is not without its complexities, the vocal paving over the fluttering instrumentals with grounding power. While relatively somber in lyrics and how they are sung (with an opening line like “you know I cannot, cannot see the fun…”), however, the track is a beautifully fun getaway from, if anything, the norms of the Brooklyn indie scene. – JP Basileo

DF3 bring their electro-pop from Mexico to NYC, premiere “Gotta Run”

Posted on:

Relocating from Mexico City to Brooklyn could prove to be a successful move for synth poppers, DF3. Between 2013 and 2014, the band wrote, recorded, and produced their debut album with the help of producers Michael Brauer (Coldplay, Twin Shadow, The Rolling Stones), Dave Bascombe (Chromeo, Goldfrapp, Ereasure) and Chris Zane (Passion Pit, St. Lucia). The band’s first single “Tell Me” is an uptempo jam reminiscent of an 80s escapade, with a lyrically serious undertone. Their follow up “Gotta Run”, which we are premiering here, advocates taking risks with a disreputable woman, a circumstance also encouranged by their EDM-ish sound – isn’t cheap sex what clubbing is all about, after all?  – Robert Frezza

Brooklyn’s Pocket Hercules brings their lo-fi pop to Shea Stadium on 03.25

Posted on:

Now that, by releasing his band This Pocket Hercules‘ debut album, he unveiled to the world his music preferences, VICE’s staff writer River Donaghey may start getting a lot of emails from NYC bands that play slacker rock or ’90s revival and are looking for coverage. Or maybe he won’t, since most musicians into those genres think it’s totally uncool to care about press (even though they secretly do). Fans of early Pavement will surely find something interesting about this Greenpoint based trio, and they’ll be able to see them live at Shea Stadium on March 25 with Free Throw, Soda Bomb, and Battle Ave.

Seen at SXSW: Heeney unveils new video + plays two NYC shows in the next month

Posted on:

We were curious to see Brooklyn garage rockers Heeney in action again, after they placed 8th in our Best of NYC Poll for emerging artists, and we caught in them in Austin at Lambert’s BBQ during the SESAC SXSW last Wednesday. They produced an impressively tight, powerful and fun show. Mark Fletcher, Max Kagan and Scott Andrews alternated at the lead vocals and backing vocals, but this didn’t affect the uniformity of their grunge influenced punk rock. The band recently unveiled this one-shot video for single "In the Mind," and will be back in NYC with two upcoming shows at Aviv on March 27 and at The Studio on April 11.

Renata Zeiguer plays Rough Trade 3/20 with project Cantina, reveals news is on its way this spring

Posted on:

Renata Zeiguer is a talented and busy musician working with Deli favorites such as Landlady, Vensaire, and her own project Cantina. She promises news this spring and will begin the season with a show March 20th at Rough Trade. Her ghostly “Horizons EP” was our featured record of the month in August of last year and we’ve been keeping an ear out since! As the review points out, yes, Cantina is the Italian word for cellar, but a quick Google search will also reveal a world of Star Wars references and videos of cute aliens jazzing out. Is Renata a wine enthusiast or secret Princess Leia cosplayer? Regardless, her music is wildflowers growing tall and fast, decorated with percussive rattles, fiddles, bird sounds, harmonies, and passages for light to travel through. – Leora Mandel

Brooklyn based pop band Canon Logic experienced recent success with their single “Runaway” which got a win in the international Unsigned Only’s Music Competition. They list influences such as FUN, Bastille, and Local Natives and describe their latest album “WYLD” as having “the right formula for mainstream success” with “souring instrumentals, spirited vocals, happy hand claps, and uplifting lyrics”. If you’re into Bastille but not into radio topper ticket prices you can check out this local bunch at Pianos on March 26th or at Mercury Lounge on the international stoner holiday on April 20th. – Leora Mandel

Integrity Reeves drops EP, sings for Billie Holiday’s 100th.

Posted on:

Integrity Reeves brings an invigorating new voice to both the local and national jazz scene. Her EP Stairway To The Stars is described as "modern vintage," inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Feist, and The Bird and the Bee, and presents interpretations from classic Joao Gilberto bossa nova to The Cardigan’s "Lovefool." Indeed, Integriti’s light, bright, twee voice is reminiscent of contemporary indie-pop vocal tones, but she sings in a fiercely classical style. The combination is both technically impressive and stylistically refreshing, and is sure to appeal to both fans of classic jazz and neophytes eager to hear what a fresh young voice can do. Delightful through and through.
You can grab a copy of her EP on itunes, and catch her live at the Kennedy Center’s Millenium Stage on April 7th as part of the Center’s tribute to Billie Holiday in honor of her centennial. –Natan Press

Abstract painter/experimental lo-fi artist Dean Cercone returns to music at Bohemian Grove 3/20

Posted on:

It appears that Dean Cercone, a Brooklyn avant-folk musician, has focused more on his passion for painting abstract art since his 2013 lo-fi release “Cirrus”. He is however playing a show on the 20th of March at beloved DIY venue Bohemian Grove. Cercone’s music hums and buzzes and confides. The songs stretch out into long, ambient passages with the vocals of an insomniac lying on top of his blankets, wondering aloud at the ceiling. If you like some visual accompaniment with your listening you can check out Cercone’s paintings. – Leora Mandel
