Show review: Deco Auto with The English Beat

Posted on:

Friday night, I was 16 again, except for the part about needing a fake ID to get into the club. If there wasn’t a good time being had by anyone and everyone in the vicinity of Knuckleheads, well, it’s on them, because all the ingredients were assembled for them—all they had to do was shake.

Deco Auto got things rolling, and the only problem I had with their set was that it wasn’t long enough. Seriously, seven songs? These guys deserve more. Steven Garcia just wails, both his vocals and his guitar; Tracy Flowers maintains the power pop beat with some of the most right-on bass playing in Kansas City, or anywhere else for that fact. The band is rounded out with Pat Tomek on drums. You know who he is. He’s the unnamed drummer who not only didn’t object, but probably thought it was a grand idea for Steve, Bob & Rich to change their name and become The Rainmakers.

But they’re resourceful and made the most of what they had to work with, and played mostly new stuff from the new LP The Curse of Deco Auto (which is awesome and you should buy a copy). They closed with a crowd favorite, “The Mercy Kind.” I can only imagine the speeding tickets that song has inspired.

Deco Auto opening for The English Beat was like a pyromaniac gleefully setting a blaze, and then watching with smug satisfaction as the headliner fanned the flames.

And fan the flames they did. For two hours, they burned down the house. If you haven’t gotten it by now, I’ll just tell you… I had a great time. For a few hours I was as carefree as I was when they provided the soundtrack of my youth, and that was the effect they wanted to have. The Beat has a new album coming out next month, and the playlist interspersed songs from it with the songs of our youth that most of the attendees came to hear… “Tears of a Clown,” “Save it for Later,” “Hands Off…She’s Mine,” “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Twist & Crawl”… they knew what several hundred people turned out on a glorious May evening for, and they did not disappoint. For more than two hours they had the crowd on their feet, dancing and skanking (relax, it just means ‘boogying’ in ska-speak) and forgetting all about the babysitters that were on the clock and making more than the revelers made in their first two or three jobs combined. But no one cared, because the show they came for… they got.

Electronic NYC artist on the rise: Galcher Lustwerk

Posted on:

Emerging in 2012 as a prominent member of BK’s experimental electronic label/collective, White Material, producer/deejay Galcher Lustwerk (who made our recent list of Best Emerging NYC Artists) specializes in a trance-like mix of ambient and house music. On this year’s sleeper, “In the Place” (streaming) he sings/raps in a smoky voice that is nevertheless smooth as silk. Galcher will be releasing futures about to release new material on his new label Lustwerk Music.

NJ Songwriter on the rise: Matt Romagna

Posted on:

New Jersey-hailing singer/songwriter/producer Matt Romagna, who played Pianos on Saturday 05.09, delivers sunny folk with his first EP ‘We Will Be Alright‘ (2014). In the rolling, handclap-backed title track, the musician tells the story of travelers persevering on a literally rocky road while the airy “When My Ship Comes Sailing In” has him relating his own determination over unspooling guitars. The singer/songwriter genre may connote heartbreak and misery but Matt Romagna refreshingly opts for joyfulness. Listen to the upbeat EP single "We Will Be Alright" below. – Zach Weg

Post-rock quartet Young Lovers announce residency at Pehrspace

Posted on:

Young Lovers are a post-rock band based in Los Angeles whose music perfectly captures the infinite of the moment. Listeners can trace elements of Broken Social Scene, Mogwai, and Explosions In The Sky from their debut self-titled LP, but the band’s combination of impeccable technique and sonic exploration is more than pastiche: the ideas behind their LP have been continually refined since the band’s inception in 2011. Their debut single “Omnia” is perhaps the brightest of stars in the album, rousing feelings of sublimity by building up riff and rhythm to glorious crash and rapture.

Young Lovers will be taking up residency at Pehrspace through the second half of May, and will be joined by other talented acts throughout Los Angeles County to perform. The Deli is proud to feature these select bands to raise awareness, as well as new and exclusive performances by Young Lovers. Best of all, each night of the residency is open to all ages, and entry is only $5! See them next Saturday with a diverse cast: Brooklyn’s experimental R&B group Ava Luna, Stones Throw’s minimalist soul/R&B duo SILK Rhodes, and OC’s math-rock upstarts Media Jeweler. Get your Friday feels on with Young Lovers’ track “Omnia” below.

Aaron Schroeder’s nearly perfect Seattle mix-tape

This guy. Man, let me tell you, he knows what’s up. He’s usually heard your favorite Seattle band waaaay before you (and sometimes even before the band has even heard themselves) because he’s often the one recording them at the super duper BLDGs recording studio. So obviously it was only right to ask him to compile the jams that really get him stoked about the music here. Listen below for a definitive slice of Seattle that should be posted on the the Seattle wikipedia page because of how legit it is. Enjoy!

Brooklyn rapper Chelsea Reject releases ‘CMPLX’ at Mercury on Monday (5.11)

Posted on:

St. Lucia-rooted, Brooklyn-based rapper Chelsea Reject shoots verbal bullets with a deft blend of introspection and consciousness. On songs such as the keys-sparkled “Gotta Shine” (streaming), the twenty-one-year-old musician (born Chelsea Alexander) starts with an identifiable story of integrity-seeking but then, with a single “you,” widens her quick flow to touch on subjects such as impoverishment, oppression, and national tragedy. With the horn-sloped “Go,” Reject ponders her purpose in a money-rounded world, effectively speaking for fellow strivers. One gets the sense, when listening to her smoothly assured voice, though, that the artist isn’t trying to make grand statements as much as relate her views. She does so thrillingly. Oceanic dreamgoth duo Ghostporn working on a new album

Posted on:

Tasia Trevino and Kenny Carranza used to work at a record store somewhere in the Central Coast of California. They began to write songs together as a sort of dare. Truth: the results were pretty damn good. So they moved to Los Angeles and teased out the rest of it, switching out band names like Black Shirts and The Siblings, just for a hot minute. But then ghostporn hit, admittedly because the two words "looked nice together." An epiphany finds Tasia, who later explains:

"[ghostporn is] not about physical intimacy with a spirit or specter, but about the indulgence of dwelling on the ecstasy and agony of memories—of loved ones, moments, places, ideas, objects, emotions, and sensations of the past."

This much is true in ghostporn’s short but poignant discography and sound. In 2010, ghostporn self-released a demo LP titled Anaphase, and had “Razorface” featured on a compilation album by Deep South Entertainment. If the lo-fi gem was a testament to their jangly past, then the EP dream songs, released on Lollipop Records in 2014, might be a vision of what’s to come. Tape-y, springy guitar arpeggios intertwine with Karen O melodies and 60’s psych swirliness, balancing ephemeral sounds with emotive lyricism. Ghostporn just finished playing a show with Brooklyn-based dreampop Shana Falana at Pehrspace, and less recently with experimental musician Liphemra at Los Globos. They’re currently writing new material for an upcoming album; no details yet, but expect to hear hints of Scott Walker, Jeff Buckley, Broadcast, and more when they premiere the songs at future shows! Statiqbloom brings industrial evil to Palisades tonight (08.05)

Posted on:

Do you ever miss those days when quality electronic bands pretended to be evil? Think Ministry, Prodigy or Nine Inch Nails… When we are not too stressed out, we actually do! Brooklyn band Statiqbloom (brainchild of Fade Kainer) is here to fill in this gap with two gritty EPs that sound as if they were forged in hell – a musically very competent hell. Single "Atrophy of Three" (straming below), from 2014’s split release with Russian band Zex Model, is a mind-bending tune for deranged humans and cyborgs programmed for dancing. If that sounds appealing to you, catch Statiqbloom live tonight (May 8) at Palisades.
