Ghostporn’s new single “Vivre Sa Vie”, performing for Dirt Dress’s last show

Posted on:

Based on the film by New Wave film maker Jean-Luc Godard, Tasia Trevino and Kenny Carranza’s newest single "Vivre Sa Vie" courses psych revivalist tones through lyrics that recount the life and spirit of Nana pushing against an unsympathetic world. This is the first release of new material Ghostporn have hinted on for their upcoming album, which will contain nods to Broadcast, Jeff Buckley, and Scott Walker (The Walker Brothers).

Ghostporn will open for post-punk trio Dirt Dress‘s last show along with Froth at tonight at the Non Plus Ultra. Listen to "Vivre Sa Vie" below, and find the lyrics to the song here. — Ryan Mo

RIchmond indie boys Black Water Gold have new release and will play The Camel, 7/25

Posted on:

In horror movies, you’re never supposed to go into the woods, but that’s exactly what Richmond-based Black Water Gold did to record their EP released early last month, "Round Up." Blending their Virginian country roots with a penchant for chill rock, this four-piece carefully weaves twang with acoustic repetition and tireless backbeat drumming. Their sound also caters to indie lovers with a lo-fi recording style and vocals like a younger, scratchier Van Morrison. If you’re looking for chill tunes with rock overtones, check out Black Water Gold at The Camel on 7/25. – Jonathan Goodwin

Baltimore garage-pop project Surf Harp releases their first single since 2013 and will play at The Crown on 7/30

Posted on:

This June Surf Harp released a new single titled "Leather" on bandcamp – their first release since "Machete" back in 2013. Fellow Batltimore based musician and electro-pop indie celebrity Dan Deacon has already marked his stamp of approval. The track’s lyrics contain suggested hand amputation, sewing, pill popping, hair receding, leather purchasing, and a pair of lipstick stained boots all disguised in the fuzzy, summery glow of surf pop instrumentation. This 5-piece group recorded locally in Baltimore’s The Compost Loft and The Annex and will be playing a show in Baltimore at the end of the month at The Crown on 7/30.

Mathrock from the Valley: The Unending Thread to tour and release debut album

Posted on:

If last night’s Steven Universe episode has reiterated anything that I already know, it’s that people can always appreciate heroes who struggle in the face of adversity. DIY kind of embodies that. We work our hardest to get to a point that could make or break our hobby.

Cesar Alas, Julian Tallman-Rogantini, and Kim Reyes have musicially worked together in different capacities: Rogantini and Alas meshed well in a previous band project, while Kim and Alas both sang in choir class. While Alas made the first move to induct Rogantini and Reyes to The Unending Thread, their present state was defined by the ambition and hard work of all three members. Hailing from the San Fernando Valley, the band’s history spans nearly five years, whittled down from an initial lineup of five. Warped Tours have come and gone, but their aim stays true. They still enjoy boba. I’m not sure if they popped their cosplay cherry yet. It could happen.

Big news though: after years of demos, singles, and acoustic covers (thumbs for Sinatra and Fitzgerald), The Unending Thread have finished their first album, <selftitled> the unending thread </selftitled>out on July 25th via Little L Records digitally, and in cassette and CD format. Pre-orders are available now through Bandcamp. To celebrate the album’s release, we’re premiering the single "Effie", a fast-burner with swirling vocal melodies dripping ’90s emo, kaleidoscopic guitars featuring Jeremy Amato (Arid & Amethyst), and push-pull rhythms. Jazzy, poppy, and more than suggestively dance-y, "Effie" shines a light through eclectic influences like The Mars Volta, Haitus Kaiyote, and Chon.

The Unending Thread will be doing a mid-summer tour through California with stops in Nevada and Arizona and ends with Silverlake’s DIY Fest. The tour kick-off starts next Monday at the White Oak Music Arts with Post Life, Celebrity Crush, and Coex. – Ryan Mo

Synth-pop duo My Body to play Shea Stadium 07.17

Posted on:

With just one EP ("Six Wives") under their belt, the Brooklyn duo, My Body, is making avant-synth-pop that stands out. The brain of My Body is Jordan Bagnall, who plays the roles of singer, songwriter, and producer. A classically trained singer, her dreamy vocals and range are impressive enough, but when laid over their resounding electronic beats in the opening track "All I Can" (video streaming below), it’s pretty much alt-pop magic. Catch them tonight, July 17th, and Shea Stadium. – Sam O’Hara

The Britanys play Baby’s All Right tonight (07.17) with Las Rosas and Tall Juan

Posted on:

It’s always a good sign when a band maintains a good pace as far as releases are concerned. Brooklyn’s garage rockers The Britanys (a band whose singer might win the award for the ‘most nasal sounding vocals in the universe’) released their sophomore EP back in October 2014 and in June 2015 already had a new track for their fans, entitled ‘It’s What it Is’ (streaming below). The Ramones guitars, the attitude os Sex Pistols and Doo-Wop influences (a genre that lately we seem to find everywhere) blend effortlessly in the new single, which you’ll surely be able to experience in a live setting tonight (July 17th) during the band’s live show at Baby’s All Right with other local likemanded bands Tall Juan and Las Rosas, opening for Mexico’s garage rock hearos Rey Pila.

Indie pop-punks I Love Monsters regroup after four years + play Mercury on 08.18

Posted on:

New York City’s pop-punk indie fusion outfit I Love Monsters can be described as a blend of Blink-182-esque pop-punk and indie rock. Under their catchy, youthful sounding vocals, there’s a certain instrumental mastery evident in their rather complex compositions. The four-piece’s latest release is 2011’s ‘Two Words‘ which was produced by Andrew Maury (RAC, Ra Ra Riot) and recorded at Zavaro Studios. While they’re still making a name for themselves at home, their songs have been featured on major HBO and MTV shows like Entourage and Teen Mom. Listen to the wailing guitar riffs and upbeat tempo of the new EP’s intro track "Car Crash" below, and – if so inclined – see them live at Mercury on August 18, it’s their first in four years! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Elisa Coia debuts music video for “This Human Ache” + announces debut EP “These Days”

Posted on:

If you belong to the ranks of sophisticated music lovers who are not intimidated by jazzy influences and value chord progressions a little more complex than the ones found in the average Ramones song, the debut single from 23-year-old singer-songwriter Elisa Coia may be just what you need. The Brooklyn by way of Rhode Island songstress released "This Human Ache" on July 13, the first track and video from her upcoming, self-produced debut EP entitled "These Days." Blending airy loungy melodies with a voice that’s full of soul, Coia offers an infectious and confident introduction to her musiclal talents. The music video, which you can check out below, is a surreal and dream-like production that pairs well with the dreamy atmosphere of the song, and the singer’s smooth moves feed our hopes for an engagin and theatrical live performance (although the artists has no shows scheduled at the moment). "These Days" is due to be released sometime this September and will contain three tracks, including "This Human Ache." – Patrick Wolff

It Was Romance releases debut album + plays Cameo on 07.28

Posted on:

Packing a 30-minute, electric ukelele-fueled emotional punch, the debut self-titled album from It Was Romance shows a band with confidence, character and promising talent. The first single, "Philadelphia," is an emotionally revealing song, telling in just under three minutes the story of a love strained by distance. Singer, multi-instrumentalist, and founder Lane Moore’s velvety voice saunters around the doo wop rhythm section and the gritty distorted guitars, providing a unique contrast to the sad subject matter of the lyrics and delivering a song fit for your summer playlist. Her unselfconscious performance in the single’s video (streaming) adds an extra layer of paradox and fun. The quintet released their debut in May, you can catch them live on July 28 when they perform at the Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn. – Patrick Wolff

Half Waif and Pinegrove to play Shea Stadium this Friday (07.17)

Posted on:

Last year’s album, ‘Kotekan‘, (with highlight "Low Blind" streaming below) proved Half Waif (pictured) as forceful, otherworldly music experience. Her ethereal vocals and the spiritual synth pop sound are a welcome, soothing break from all the loud garage-rock coming out of Brooklyn right now. Half Waif is the project of Nandi Rose Plunkett, a Brooklyn native, who also performs in NJ mellow indie rock band, Pinegrove. Catch them both playing the last of a series of shows together this Friday the 17th at Shea Stadium. – Sam O’Hara

DC punks (Stop Worrying and) Love the Bomb plays The Black Cat on 8/16

Posted on:

There’s nothing strange about loving DC-based (Stop Worrying and) Love the Bomb’s gripping punk chords, throaty vocals, and drumming worthy of aerial imitation. Featuring both female and male pipes at the mic, SWALTB’s sound is heavily influenced by the heyday of historic punk venue CBGB and reaches out to the eardrums with end-of-the-world lyrics and slick transitions from tantalizing guitar solos to meaty choruses. Their six-track LP released back in January, “Nouns,” is sure to please any fan of punk or the band’s self-carved niche of proto-post-revival. Treat your brain on 8/16 at the Black Cat to some top-tier punk. – Jonathan Goodwin
